Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance and means of making corporate social responsibility (CSR) an integral part of corporate strategy with the help of case studies. Design/methodology/approach – The article explores the transformation of business from being egocentric to socially responsible. With the use of examples it demonstrates how integrating CSR into strategy can create sustainable business models. Findings – Firms need to develop a framework for integrating CSR into their business strategy for long term successful survival. Social implications – Corporates and society are intertwined and mutually dependent. Business cannot survive without society's acquiescence nor succeed without its active support. Originality/value – The article explains the benefits of CSR and how to make it an integral part of business strategy to gain a competitive advantage.

AbstractHybrid manufacturing processes are known for combining the advantages of additive manufacturing and more traditional manufacturing processes such as machining to create components of complex geometry while minimising material waste. The trend towards lightweight design, especially in view of e-mobility, gives aluminium materials an important role to play. This study examines the use of aluminium alloys in laser metal wire deposition (LMWD) processes with subsequent subtractive machining, which is considerably more difficult due to the different process-related influences. The investigations are focussed on the influence of the differently controlled laser power on the shape accuracy, the microstructure, and the hardness of the AlMg5 test components after the LMWD process with subsequent subtractive machining by turning. The long-term goal of the investigations is to increase the stability of the hybrid production process of AlMg5 components with defined dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties.

Additive manufacturing has been adopted in many aerospace and defense applications to reduce weight and buy-to-fly ratios of low-volume high- complexity parts. Polymer-based additive manufacturing processes such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) has enabled aerospace manufactures to improve the structural efficiency of parts through generative design or topology optimization. This level of design freedom did not exist in the past due to limitations associated with traditional manufacturing processes such as subtractive machining. Improvements in the material and the maturation of the FDM process has led to the production of many non-structural flightworthy parts used in aircraft today. Polymer-based additive manufacturing can be further leveraged in aerospace applications with the addition of electroplated coatings that act as reinforcement. While many of the commonly known electroplated coating applications involve enhancing the part appearance, electroplated coatings can also improve the strength, stiffness, and durability of plastic parts. Depending on the use case, the thickness of the metallic plating material (combination of copper and nickel) can be tailored to achieve the desired composite properties (metal and polymer). In this research, the tensile and flexural mechanical properties were assessed for Ultem™ 9085 FDM printed specimens and compared to specimens with metallic coating thicknesses of approximately 75-μm, 150-μm, and 300-μm. Non- destructive inspections using x-ray computed tomography were performed prior to mechanical testing to assess the electroplated coating thickness variation and overall quality.

Biomedical objects are used as prostheses to repair damaged bone structures and missing body parts, as well as to study complex human organs and plan surgical procedures. They are, however, not economical to make by traditional manufacturing processes. Researchers have therefore explored the multi-material layered manufacturing (MMLM) technology to fabricate biomedical objects from CAD models. Yet, current MMLM systems remain experimental with limited practicality; they are slow, expensive, and can only handle small, simple objects. To address these limitations, this chapter presents the multi-material virtual prototyping (MMVP) technology for digital fabrication of complex biomedical objects cost-effectively. MMVP integrates MMLM with virtual reality to fabricate biomedical objects for stereoscopic visualisation and analyses to serve biomedical engineering purposes. This chapter describes the principle of MMVP and the processes of digital fabrication of biomedical objects. Case studies are presented to demonstrate these processes and their applications in biomedical engineering.

With the development of globalization and knowledge economy, intangible assets have become more important in competition. The practice of the intellectual capital business model in Chinese enterprises is an important source for innovation and lets Chinese enterprises get sustainable competitive advantage. In this paper, the authors take K group as an example, and analyze methods of EI management, which has improved employee motivation in innovation. The authors also use empirical analysis to validate the positive correlation between the emotional intelligence (EI) of core staff and job performance. With the development of knowledge economy and corporate strategy theory, knowledge management has taken an important role in the competition and intellectual capital (IC) has become the source of value creation. Intellectual capital business model is a description of the intellectual capital operation, the better mode of operation, the higher and greater value of intellectual capital. As such, intellectual capital is becoming an essential business component; the application of intellectual capital business models increases economic efficiency and enhances competitiveness.

Case overview After development for 10 years, JD was now China’s second largest business-to-customer (B2C) e-retailer and the largest in self-operated sector. It was September 2015 when Liu Qiangdong was deciding whether to persist with JD’s self-operated model and the heavy investment in the self-built logistics system. JD’s business model had been functioning well. However, as JD grew bigger and bigger, it became too expensive to expand its logistics system. JD had not made a profit since it raised funds from investors. Liu had to come up with a good proposal before the next monthly meeting to convince them that JD would finally overtake its biggest rival, Alibaba which ran on a different business model. In addition, JD was exploiting the rural and the global markets, as well as a new business in internet finance. Facing challenges and dilemmas, should JD persist with its model? How could Liu align short-term profitability with long-run development? How could JD overcome attacks from Alibaba and other competitors? Expected learning outcomes This case is appropriate for courses in e-business and strategy, particularly those with a strong focus on doing e-business in emerging markets (e.g. China). Purpose This study aims to identify and analyze the different roles corporate social responsibility (CSR) can play in corporate strategy. By acknowledging that one of the biggest challenges for companies in committing to sustainability is the strategy work, the authors outline specific strategic initiatives to achieve these roles and the strategic outcomes that will follow such initiatives. Design/methodology/approach Four illustrative case examples show how companies are recasting the role of CSR. The new CSR roles are characterized through two strategic dimensions: an inside-out (firm-oriented) vs outside-in (market-oriented) orientation and an emphasis on leveraging vs an emphasis on prospecting activities. Findings The findings show that to realize the opportunities of CSR for business, the environment and society at large, the role of CSR in the boardroom must be reconfigured. By recasting its role, CSR can become a driver for the strategy process and a transformative force generating strategic changes. Practical implications This paper aims to encourage top executives to take a proactive stance toward responsibility, recognize the new roles and potential impact that CSR can have in corporate strategy and assist strategic decision-making regarding CSR. Originality/value The paper aims to move beyond integrating sustainability into existing strategies and business models by demonstrating how sustainability can also inspire strategic changes a priori when the role of CSR is recast in companies. By viewing CSR as a driver of corporate strategy and strategic initiatives, the authors suggest that besides helping the environment, the community and society, CSR can take care of corporate strategy.

In the current days, the new range of machine tools allows the production of titanium alloy parts for the aeronautical sector through additive technologies. The quality of the materials produced is being studied extensively by the research community. This new manufacturing paradigm also opens important challenges such as the definition and analysis of the optimal strategies for finishing-oriented machining in this type of part. Researchers in both materials and manufacturing processes are making numerous advances in this field. This article discusses the analysis of the production and subsequent machining in the quality of TI6Al4V produced by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), more specifically Plasma Arc Welding (PAW). The promising results observed make it a viable alternative to traditional manufacturing methods.

In this paper, an analytical modeling of microchannel design and manufacturing with excimer laser micromachining is presented for medical devices development. Micro/Nano fabrication methods have made possible the creation of extremely tiny structures and systems which cannot be generated using traditional manufacturing processes. Current fabrication methods of microchannels generally require serial fabrication processes including a masking process. To overcome the drawbacks of current methods, we propose to use excimer laser micromachining to directly create microfluidic structures. Parametric study of laser machining was conducted before fabrication of microfluidic systems on polyethylene. An analytic modeling of the laser micromachining is presented to predict the machined microstructures and the surface finish. The liquid flow was visualized and studied using fluorescent dye and the velocity was measured to compare liquid behavior in each channel. The presented techniques can be used for the design and manufacturing of micro-scale medical devices development.

Topology optimization provides optimized solutions with complex geometries which are often not suitable for direct manufacturing without further steps or post-processing by the designer. There has been a recent progression towards linking topology optimization with additive manufacturing, which is less restrictive than traditional manufacturing methods, but the technology is still in its infancy being costly, time-consuming, and energy inefficient. For applications in automotive or aerospace industries, the traditional manufacturing processes are still preferred and utilized to a far greater extent. Adding manufacturing constraints within the topology optimization framework eliminates the additional design steps of interpreting the topology optimization result and converting it to viable manufacturable parts. Furthermore, unintended but inevitable deviations that occur during manual conversion from the topology optimized result can be avoided. In this paper, we review recent advances to integrate (traditional) manufacturing constraints in the topology optimization process. The focus is on the methods that can create manufacturable and well-defined geometries. The survey will discuss the advantages, limitations, and related challenges of manufacturability in topology optimization.
