The article points out that psychometric scaling based on self-assessment is not a measurement in the usual meaning and rank indicators should not be taken as numerical markers. Clarification of statistical procedures for different types of scaling is explained. The validity of the proposal to use death as a “solid” outcome indicator for universal evaluation of the effectiveness of antidepressants is questioned.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify different types of organizational innovativeness in Austrian hotels and analyze their connection to (innovation) success. In the face of growing international competition, innovation is becoming increasingly important for Austria’s hotel industry. A prerequisite for innovation is organizational innovativeness. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a quantitative survey of 255 Austrian hotel businesses with a minimum of five employees. Innovativeness was measured by three dimensions (willingness, ability and possibility to innovate) and success by five dimensions (overall performance: financial, market and employee-related success; innovation success: product and process innovations). Findings were obtained by combining an exploratory factor analysis with a cluster analysis. Findings – Factor analysis reveals five factors determining organizational innovativeness: “cooperation as trigger for change”; “acceptance of change”; “resource based scope for change”; “pluralism as trigger for change”; and “loose coupling and error-tolerance”. The cluster analysis identifies four types of hotels regarding organizational innovativeness indicating differences regarding the success dimensions: “potential innovators hindered by scarce resources and unsupportive structures”, “well-resourced conservatives”, “potential innovators hindered by a haphazard approach” and “cautious idea hunters”. On the whole, results show that a balanced configuration of organizational innovativeness combined with a cautious approach is connected with greater (innovation) success. Research limitations/implications – Key-informant and survivor biases have to be considered as all items in the questionnaire were evaluated by self-assessment of the hotel management and only successful hotels (in the sense of survival) were analyzed. One important implication is that (innovation) success depends on the system that enables it; therefore, organizational innovativeness is a precondition of successful innovations. Nevertheless, there is little research on organizational innovativeness in the service sector so far. Practical implications – This paper supports tourism businesses in understanding the concept of organizational innovativeness and its relation to (innovation) success. SMEs, which dominate the Austrian hotel industry, tend to focus on the financial aspect of innovativeness and, in general, do not consider the range of factors that constitute an organization’s innovativeness (willingness, ability and possibility to innovate) and the various outcomes. Originality/value – By combining organizational innovativeness and (innovation) success, the paper applies an important element of innovation theory to the Austrian hotel industry. The characterization of different types of hotels regarding organizational innovativeness and success enables a (self-) assessment for hotel businesses and the deduction of customized implications.

This quantitative study aims at analysing the pedagogical concerns of supervising teachers of the Supervised Internship in initial training in Physical Education. Twenty-seven teachers from public and private higher education institutions in Brazil participated in this study. For the data collection, the Pedagogical Concerns Scale of the Teacher was used, which evaluates the pedagogical concerns in the following dimensions: Self, Task and Impact. The results present an abundance of pedagogical concerns corresponding to the dimension of the impact of the teaching, being the main ones: to identify problems of learning of the students and to meet the needs of the different types of students. In the dimension of the teaching task, the most pointed concerns were the lack of a conscious policy of self-assessment and the lack of continuity in the annual planning of the discipline. Concerns about the personal aspect are not present among the highest pedagogical concerns of the trainee supervisors. It is concluded that the supervisors of internships concentrate their pedagogical concerns on the impact dimension of the teaching, necessitating in this way, the fomentation of strategies that improve their interventions and actions in the context of the supervised internship in the initial formation in Physical Education.

Methodological approach to allocation of constitutional characteristics of children which subdivided in terms of mental activity orientation type as well as to their mental organisation features' identification and to adaptation opportunities' comparative characteristics is offered in this article. Distinctions of systemic portraits of children who are either introverts, or centroverts, or extroverts, reflect "the constitutional norms" distinctions revealing advantages and disadvantages of each type: thus, introverts are disciplined, logical, assidious when being exposed to long simple monotonous loadings; they show endowments in motor function of the hand, and they are industrious, but inert, disturbing, adynamic; extroverts, on the contrary, are resolute, vigorous and initiative; they have high reactive potential; but what is their disadvantage, is deficiency of attention and randomness, tendency to manifestation of explosive temper; the greatest optimality is peculiar to the centroverts who represent "the constitutional balance". The described differences in social and psychological properties are the basis for creation of the differentiated approaches to upbringing children when optimising adaptation in introvert children by means of decreasing uneasiness, improving mental activity and self-assessment; and in extroverts, by means of decreasing excess activity, aggression, impulsiveness; and in centroverts, by means of increasing randomness and independence. The offered approach will be of interest of experts in the field of pedagogy and psychology, allowing individualising as much as possible upbringing programmes in the conditions of educational institution and family.

The article focuses on relationship experiences in the light of the diversity of relationship forms, relationship length and the attitude of partners to relationship permanence. The conceptual framework was determined by the sociotemporal perspective, and the analysis was carried out with reference to concepts employed in the fields of the sociology of the family, the sociology of intimacy, the sociology of gender and the sociology of time. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the socio-demographic characteristics of women and men and their relationship experiences, the diversity of relationship forms and their length, as well as their readiness to stay in a relationship or leave in a crisis situation. The research was carried out using the diagnostic survey method on a representative sample of adult Poles in January 2018. Gender has been shown to differentiate the length of relationship and the attitudes to relationship permanence. It was found that women stay in shorter relationships more often than men. It was also found that the experiences of women with different types of relationships are more diverse when linked to their social status than the experiences of men. Four types of orientation to the (im)permanence of relationships were identified. It was established that men’s readiness to leave depends on their age, education and self-assessment of their financial situation, whereas women’s decision to leave depends on their age, education and socio-occupational category.

In practice, there are a lot of factors that can affect the expected final outcome of machining processes. That is why during last decades a great number of experimental studies have been made for improving this kind of processes. As the realization of the tests for taking into account factors such as machines, materials, tools and cutting conditions requires resources of different types and can provoke environmental damage at different levels, diverse methods of experimental design and statistical analysis have been developed looking for efficient experimentation. This paper is focused on the study of these statistical methods. It collects the principal types of experimental designs and statistical procedures used in experimental studies for the control and the improvement of machining processes. Additionally, the review and analysis of the main works on the machining processes area for each one of these statistical tools has been made.

This study considers the impact that different levels of interactivity have on the memory and understanding. In particular, it focuses in the use of interactive self-assessment questions (ISAQs) as a mechanism to help students learn better. An ISAQ is a computer-based multiple-choice or text-entry question that requires input from the learner, and provides feedback based on that input. This study extends some of Mayer’s (1990) multimedia design principles and considers their applicability in this context. The study also takes into account whether the incorporation of ISAQs has a measurable impact on learning as indicated by their performance in tests. The study considers three different types of ISAQs, designed to engage either memory or understanding, in an effort to determine which one is the most effective. It considers the effect of adding interactivity in the form of memory (retention) and understanding (transfer) self-assessment questions in a learning-object content management system used by undergraduate students at Brunel University in West London, UK. It was predicted that both types of ISAQ would increase the performance of learners in tests but with different degrees. The results indicate that transfer tests have a significant impact on retention.
