Eugenia M. Del Pino

This article provides a brief account of the career of Eugenia M. del Pino. Casual events and serendipity played important roles in modeling her career as developmental biologist. In collaboration with colleagues and students, she analyzed the biology and development of the marsupial frog Gastrotheca riobambae (family: Hemiphractidae) in comparison with Xenopus laevis and tropical frogs. The emphasis was placed on oogenesis and the early stages of development. Topics include the mono- and multi-nucleated modes of oogenesis. She described two modes of gastrulation in frogs, gastrulation modes one and two according to the timing of notochord elongation. She was able to establish a pioneer laboratory for the comparative analysis of frog development in Ibero America at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, in Quito. Her contributions to society include her influence in the establishment of the National Academy of Sciences of Ecuador, and efforts toward the conservation of the Galápagos Archipelago. She is part of a pioneer group of professors that placed Biology as an academic discipline in Ecuador. The experiences of her career reveal that we all face difficulties in our jobs. However, nothing is impossible when we follow a passion. Her work reveals that the key to success is to turn obstacles into opportunities.

The article presents the research of genus Crataegus L. diversity in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. We provided comparative analysis of specimens from the herbarium of the Institute of Botany of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Bioresources of Nakhchivan Section of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and Nakhchivan State University to clarify the current state of the genus Crataegus L. in the flora of the Nakhichivan Autonomous Republic. Based on the analysis of field data and collected herbarium during 2004-2015 and literature data we revealed 22 species of the genus in the flora of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic at present time. We also fixed that some 17 wildgrowing species occur in natural conditions, among them Crataegus chlorocarpa Lenne et C. Koch, C. ferganensis Pojark., C. sanguinea Pall., C. songarica C. Koch, C. turkestanica Pojark. were introducted into the culture and used in the landscaping of parks and gardens. We also considered the data on synonyms species, patterns of distribution among high-altitude zones, habitats as well as period of flowering and fruiting.

Since ancient time, herbal drugs were highly used in the prevention and cure of various human illnesses. In India, Azadirachta indica being commonly known as Neem or Margosa is one of the multi-functional trees; belonging to Meliaceae family. In 1992, the US National Academy of Sciences was published a report entitled ‘Neem- a tree for solving global problems’. It is still considered as ‘village dispensary’ throughout the India. There are two species of Azadirachta which have been investigated; Azadirachta indica that is found in the Indian subcontinent and Azadirachta excelsa Kack that is homegrown to Indonesia and Philippines. A large number of pharmacologically active substances have been identified and isolated from the different parts of neem including azadirachtin, meliacin, gedunin, salanin, nimbin, valassin and various other components which are derived from these main compounds. Many different studies have been evaluated and authenticated for its various traditional and pharmacological activities like itching, leprosy, wound healing, spermicidal, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, antidiabetic and analgesic etc. In the beginning of 1979, patenting on neem was started by CSIR to separate the active compounds from neem oil. Its great implantation fights with soil erosion, global warming, deforestations and desertification world-wide. In 2002, World Neem Conference raised the neem tree as an industrial or commercial plant. This review is going to explore comprehensively; traditional, pharmacological potential along with patenting, environmental & industrial significant of various parts of neem tree with safety concerns.
