The synthesis and characterization of new deuterated liquid crystal (LC) compounds based on phenyl tolane core is described in this paper. The work presents an alternative molecular approach to the conventional LC design. Correlations between molecular structure and mesomorphic and optical properties for compounds which are alkyl-hydrogen terminated and alkyl-deuterium, have been drawn. The compounds are characterized by mass spectrometry (electron ionization) analysis and infrared spectroscopy. They show enantiotropic nematic behavior in a broad temperature range, confirmed by a polarizing thermomicroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Detailed synthetic procedures are attached. Synthesized compounds show a significantly reduced absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) and medium-wavelength infrared (MWIR) radiation range, and stand as promising components of medium to highly birefringent liquid crystalline mixtures.

In this study, a leaf-like [Formula: see text] mixed phase nanosheets array was successfully prepared by anodization. XRD, EDS, and XPS analysis confirmed the formation of [Formula: see text] mixed phase nanostructures. SEM images indicate that the fabricated [Formula: see text] mixed phase nanosheets almost grow vertically on the substrate. The average height of nanosheets is approximately 500 nm. The optical absorption of the mixed phase covers the entire wavelength region of visible light and a little part of the near-infrared region of short wavelength.

ABSTRACTIn this report, we describe our initial synthesis and characterization of mono-functional and bi-functional dibromoalkyl oligothiophenes to achieve amphiphilicity and telechelic functionality. Oligothiophenes are an important class of organic materials for opto-electronic devices and display applications. We have mono-functionalized oligothiophenes by the synthesis of a quinquethiophene bromoalkyl derivative. A bi-functional sexithiophene was derived primarily by the symmetrical coupling of terthiophene derivatives. Both were synthesized using Grignard coupling and lithiation reaction methodologies. UV-Vis, IR, NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS, and DSC confirmed the structure and physical properties of the oligomers. In addition, we have also synthesized an amphiphilic diamine derivative from the reaction of hexamethylenediamine with a bromoalkyl terthiophene derivative. Using photoluminescence, the photophysical properties of the oligomers were found to be that of typical oligothiophenes. Processing as ultrathin films for devices is currently being investigated.
