AbstractIncreasing demand for self-powered wearable sensors has spurred an urgent need to develop energy harvesting systems that can reliably and sufficiently power these devices. Within the last decade, reverse electrowetting-on-dielectric (REWOD)-based mechanical motion energy harvesting has been developed, where an electrolyte is modulated (repeatedly squeezed) between two dissimilar electrodes under an externally applied mechanical force to generate an AC current. In this work, we explored various combinations of electrolyte concentrations, dielectrics, and dielectric thicknesses to generate maximum output power employing REWOD energy harvester. With the objective of implementing a fully self-powered wearable sensor, a “zero applied-bias-voltage” approach was adopted. Three different concentrations of sodium chloride aqueous solutions (NaCl-0.1 M, NaCl-0.5 M, and NaCl-1.0 M) were used as electrolytes. Likewise, electrodes were fabricated with three different dielectric thicknesses (100 nm, 150 nm, and 200 nm) of Al2O3 and SiO2 with an additional layer of CYTOP for surface hydrophobicity. The REWOD energy harvester and its electrode–electrolyte layers were modeled using lumped components that include a resistor, a capacitor, and a current source representing the harvester. Without using any external bias voltage, AC current generation with a power density of 53.3 nW/cm2 was demonstrated at an external excitation frequency of 3 Hz with an optimal external load. The experimental results were analytically verified using the derived theoretical model. Superior performance of the harvester in terms of the figure-of-merit comparing previously reported works is demonstrated. The novelty of this work lies in the combination of an analytical modeling method and experimental validation that together can be used to increase the REWOD harvested power extensively without requiring any external bias voltage.

AbstractShape-shifting materials are a powerful tool for the fabrication of reconfigurable materials. Upon activation, not only a change in their shape but also a large shift in their material properties can be realized. As compared with the 4D printing of 2D-to-3D shape-shifting materials, the 4D printing of reconfigurable (i.e., 3D-to-3D shape-shifting) materials remains challenging. That is caused by the intrinsically 2D nature of the layer-by-layer manner of fabrication, which limits the possible shape-shifting modes of 4D printed reconfigurable materials. Here, we present a single-step production method for the fabrication and programming of 3D-to-3D shape-changing materials, which requires nothing more than a simple modification of widely available fused deposition modeling (FDM) printers. This simple modification allows the printer to print on curved surfaces. We demonstrate how this modified printer can be combined with various design strategies to achieve high levels of complexity and versatility in the 3D-to-3D shape-shifting behavior of our reconfigurable materials and devices. We showcase the potential of the proposed approach for the fabrication of deployable medical devices including deployable bifurcation stents that are otherwise extremely challenging to create.

A new barium silico-aluminate phase with the stoichiometry Ba13.35(1) Al30.7Si5.3O70 has been found and characterized. The compound crystallizes in the space group P63/m (No. 176) with a = 15.1683(17), c = 8.8708(6) Å, V = 1767.5(4) Å3, Z = 1, Rw = 0.026, 32 refined parameters. A 3-dimensional matrix of Al/SiO4 tetrahedra with Ba(II) ions located in channels along the c axis builds up the structure. One of these channels is partially filled with Ba(II) ions (CN 6+3) in Wyckoff position 2a, leaving ~ 1/3 of the positions empty. The second and third type of Ba(II) ions occupy channels orientated along the c axis with CN 4+2+2 and 4+3+1, respectively. The structure shows a rare clustered arrangement of six tetrahedra filled exclusively by Al(III) and therefore is an exception to Loewenstein’s rule. The other tetrahedral positions show an Al to Si ratio of ~ 4 : 1. The Al/Si-O bond lengths in the tetrahedral Al/Si positions drawn vs. site occupation show linear behavior similar to the prediction by Vegard’s rule for solid solutions. After doping with Eu(II) the compound shows bright orange-yellow luminescence with an unusual large shift of the Eu(II) emission band.

AbstractThis note extends the authors' earlier work on incumbency in Canadian federal and Ontario provincial elections by examining riding by riding results in the 1984 federal and 1985 Ontario provincial elections. In particular, the authors test their earlier hypothesis that incumbency effects are swamped by large shifts in voter preferences. The results indicate that incumbency had a significant impact, and that this impact was not reduced by the large shift in votes in the 1984 federal election. The authors reject the hypothesis that large shifts in party allegiance reduce incumbency effects.

AbstractFe-O and Co-O films were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering in a mixture of Ar and O2 gases. By varying the oxygen to argon ratio, oxide films with stoichiometry FeO, Fe3O4, α-Fe2O3, CoO and Co3O4 were produced. TEM studies showed that the Fe – oxide films were polycrystalline consisting of small almost spherical grains, about 10 nm in size. Co-O films had different microstructure with grain size and shape dependent on the amount of oxygen. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the grains in Fe-O films were randomly oriented in contrast to Co-O films in which a <111> texture was observed. Pure FeO and α-Fe2O3 films were found to be superparamagnetic at room temperature but strongly ferromagnetic at low temperatures in contrast to the antiferromagnetic nature of bulk samples. A very large shift in the hysteresis loop, about 3800 Oe, was observed in field cooled Co-CoO films indicating the presence of a large unidirectional exchange anisotropy.

The unshrouded impeller is widely used in industrial centrifugal compressors and normally operates at high tip speed and large volume flow. However, this type of impeller can be very sensitive to flow excitations such as IGV wake, and hence encounters the challenge of high dynamic stress. Due to the lack of experimental vibration data, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of the IGV preswirl effect. The real operating representative data from strain gauges is acquired during the experiment. The blade transient and quasi-steady response due to upstream IGV wake under different configurations are investigated and quantified. Results show that the blade response increases with larger positive regulation. And under specific operating conditions, the vibration of the blade is quite large, which is comparable with synchronize resonance. This increment is attributed to the aerodynamic loading change due to enhanced distortion of the inlet flow. Based on the current findings, accurate numerical prediction of the blade forced vibration for a large shift of inlet flow condition is also needed for more reliable operating of the impeller.
