Complex freeform surfaces and structures are increasingly designed and used in the product and building industry due to the advances in mathematics and digital design tools. However, there is still a gap between designing freeform surfaces and fabricating them. The process of preparing freeform surfaces’ shop drawings is complicated, time-consuming, and lacks the mutual understanding among the stakeholders. Computational design and Building Information Modeling (BIM) can serve as a mediator agent for the integration of design goals with the geometric logic of constructability. They can also facilitate creating platforms for designing and evaluating freeform structures. This open-ended qualitative research attempts to develop a systematic methodology for automating the design and construction drafting process of freeform lattice space structure. Solving this complex geometric problem aims to benefit the design for construction and manufacturers and shrink the cost and time of the process. The study employs a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) tool and introduces an algorithm that generates a BIM model. The BIM model contains shop drawings and suggests the specifications of the main elements, such as beams, glass panels, and nodes.

Layered geological formations with large seismic velocity contrasts can effectively create channel waves in cross‐borehole seismic data. The existence of channel waves for such waveguides can be confirmed by ray tracing, wave equation modeling, and modal analysis. Channel wave arrivals are identified in cross‐borehole data recorded at Conoco’s Newkirk test facility. For these data, where velocity contrasts are about 2 to 1, tomography based on first arrival traveltimes, is limited due to problems with extreme ray bending and seismic shadow zones. However, it may be possible to extract geological information using channel wave information. The seismometer differencing method appears to be a promising approach for detecting waveguide boundaries by use of cross‐borehole data.

Abstract This paper takes advantage of the duality between point and plane geometries and studies a class of tensor-product surfaces that can be generated kinematically as surfaces enveloped by a plane under two-parameter rational Bézier motions. The results of this cross-disciplinary work, between the field of Computer Aided Geometric Design and Kinematics, can be used as a basis for studying geometric and kinematic issues associated with the design and manufacture of freeform surfaces.
