This paper presents an automatic three-dimensional reconstruction method based on multi-view stereo vision for the Mogao Grottoes. 3D digitization technique has been used in cultural heritage conservation and replication over the past decade, especially the methods based on binocular stereo vision. However, mismatched points are inevitable in traditional binocular stereo matching due to repeatable or similar features of binocular images. In order to reduce the probability of mismatching greatly and improve the measure precision, a portable four-camera photographic measurement system is used for 3D modelling of a scene. Four cameras of the measurement system form six binocular systems with baselines of different lengths to add extra matching constraints and offer multiple measurements. Matching error based on epipolar constraint is introduced to remove the mismatched points. Finally, an accurate point cloud can be generated by multi-images matching and sub-pixel interpolation. Delaunay triangulation and texture mapping are performed to obtain the 3D model of a scene. The method has been tested on 3D reconstruction several scenes of the Mogao Grottoes and good results verify the effectiveness of the method.

Nowadays, binocular stereo vision (BSV) is extensively used in real-time 3D reconstruction, which requires cameras to quickly implement self-calibration. At present, the camera parameters are typically estimated through iterative optimization. The calibration accuracy is high, but the process is time consuming. Hence, a system of BSV with rotating and non-zooming cameras is established in this study, in which the cameras can rotate horizontally and vertically. The cameras’ intrinsic parameters and initial position are estimated in advance by using Zhang’s calibration method. Only the yaw rotation angle in the horizontal direction and pitch in the vertical direction for each camera should be obtained during rotation. Therefore, we present a novel self-calibration method by using a single feature point and transform the imaging model of the pitch and yaw into a quadratic equation of the tangent value of the pitch. The closed-form solutions of the pitch and yaw can be obtained with known approximate values, which avoid the iterative convergence problem. Computer simulation and physical experiments prove the feasibility of the proposed method. Additionally, we compare the proposed method with Zhang’s method. Our experimental data indicate that the averages of the absolute errors of the Euler angles and translation vectors relative to the reference values are less than 0.21° and 6.6 mm, respectively, and the averages of the relative errors of 3D reconstruction coordinates do not exceed 4.2%.

Aiming at the camera calibration of binocular stereo vision system, based on Zhang’s calibration method, the specified points in the calibration template obtained by the Harris operator, a set of camera calibration system combined with VC++ and Matlab was developed. The results of the calibration system, comparing with those of four-step calibration method, was analyzed and showed that: the error of calibration data in this system was within 0~5 mm, which had a high precision calibration, providing a new reference measure for the camera calibration.
