AbstractWe report optical switching by a silica microsphere optical resonator coated by a conjugated polymer. Microspheres were fabricated by melting the tip of an optical fiber and coated by dipping in a 1 mg/ml toluene solution of poly(2,5-dioctyloxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (DOO-PPV). The resonator properties were characterized by evanescently coupling 1.55 µm light propagating along a stripline-pedestal anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide into optical whispering gallery modes (WGMs). WGM linewidths less than 2 MHz were measured, corresponding to cavity Q > 108. WGM resonant frequency shifts as large as 3.2 GHz were observed when 405 nm pump light with a power density of ~100 mW/cm2 was incident on the microsphere. The time constant of the observed frequency shifts is approximately 0.165 seconds, leading us to attribute the frequency shift to thermo-optic effects. Such a system should be capable of thermo-optically switching at speeds on the order of 10 kHz.

The results of studies of quantum-cascade laser with a surface emission through a grating formed in the layers of the top cladding of the waveguide by ion beam milling are presented. The active region of the QCL heterostructure was formed based on a heteropair of In0.53Ga0.47As / Al0.48In0.52As solid alloys with two-phonon resonance design. It is shown that lasing at room temperature close to 7.9 µm is demonstrated for a laser with a ring diameter of 191 µm. The mode spacing corresponds to whispering gallery modes.

Abstract The relativistic massless charge carriers with a Fermi velocity of about c/300 in graphene enable us to realize two distinct types of resonances (c, the speed of light in vacuum). One is electron whispering-gallery mode in graphene quantum dots arising from the Klein tunneling of the massless Dirac fermions. The other is atomic collapse state, which has never been observed in experiment with real atoms due to the difficulty of producing heavy nuclei with charge Z > 170, however, can be realized near a Coulomb impurity in graphene with a charge Z ≥ 1 because of the “small” velocity of the Dirac excitations. Here, unexpectedly, we demonstrate that both the electron whispering-gallery modes and atomic collapse states coexist in graphene/WSe2 heterostructure quantum dots due to the Coulomb-like potential near their edges. By applying a perpendicular magnetic field, evolution from the atomic collapse states to unusual Landau levels in the collapse regime are explored for the first time.

AbstractThe manipulation of light emitted by two-dimensional semiconductors grounds forthcoming technologies in the field of on-chip communications. However, these technologies require from the so elusive out-of-plane photon sources to achieve an efficient coupling of radiated light into planar devices. Here we propose a versatile spectroscopic method that enables the identification of the out-of-plane component of dipoles. The method is based on the selective coupling of light emitted by in-plane and out-of-plane dipoles to the whispering gallery modes of spherical dielectric microresonators, in close contact to them. We have applied this method to demonstrate the existence of dipoles with an out-of-plane orientation in monolayer WSe2 at room temperature. Micro-photoluminescent measurements, numerical simulations based on finite element methods, and ab-initio calculations have identified trions as the source responsible for this out-of-plane emission, opening new routes for realizing on-chip integrated systems with applications in information processing and quantum communications.
