The effect of plasma Coulomb microfied dynamics on spectral line shapes is under consideration. The analytical solution of the problem is unachievable with famous Chandrasekhar–Von-Neumann results up to the present time. The alternative methods are connected with modeling of a real ion Coulomb field dynamics by approximate models. One of the most accurate theories of ions dynamics effect on line shapes in plasmas is the Frequency Fluctuation Model (FFM) tested by the comparison with plasma microfield numerical simulations. The goal of the present paper is to make a detailed comparison of the FFM results with analytical ones for the linear and quadratic Stark effects in different limiting cases. The main problem is connected with perturbation additions laws known to be vector for small particle velocities (static line shapes) and scalar for large velocities (the impact limit). The general solutions for line shapes known in the frame of scalar perturbation additions are used to test the FFM procedure. The difference between “scalar” and “vector” models is demonstrated both for linear and quadratic Stark effects. It is shown that correct transition from static to impact limits for linear Stark-effect needs in account of the dependence of electric field jumping frequency in FFM on the field strengths. However, the constant jumping frequency is quite satisfactory for description of the quadratic Stark-effect. The detailed numerical comparison for spectral line shapes in the frame of both scalar and vector perturbation additions with and without jumping frequency field dependence for the linear and quadratic Stark effects is presented.

In this work, we suggest a methodology to determine the impact parameter for neutral dysprosium emission lines from the characterization of the plasma generated by laser ablation in a sealed chamber filled with argon. The procedure is a combination of known consistent spectroscopic methods for plasma temperature determination, electron density, and species concentration. With an electron density of 3.1 × 1018 cm–3 and temperature close to 104 K, we estimated the impact electron parameter for nine spectral lines of the neutral dysprosium atom. The gaps in the impact parameter data in the literature, mainly for heavy elements, stress the importance of the proposed method.

The Impact

The surface degradation of metals in boiler tubes and turbines in high-temperature corrosive environments causes severe problems in fuel combustion power plant systems. High-temperature resistant materials have been recently developed using a thermal barrier coating (TBC) and high-chromium alloys. Oxide films or coatings formed on metal surfaces at high temperatures can sometimes decrease the corrosion rate. However, the damage to the material is often accelerated by the mechanical removal of corrosion products from the material surface. It is therefore very important to investigate the mechanical and adhesive properties of the oxide films or coatings on metal surfaces used in high-temperature environments. This paper introduces a tribological method that uses a single spherical projectile impact at high temperature to measure the mechanical and adhesive properties of oxide films formed on various metal surfaces. Impact tests were performed on the surfaces of oxide films after their growth in a high-temperature furnace, and the deformed or fractured surfaces were observed in order to measure the mechanical and adhesive properties. The mechanical and adhesive properties of an elastic modulus, fracture, and exfoliation stresses were measured using the impact method, and the results depended on the type of metal oxide films and on the high-temperature environment.

The Impact

In a previous paper the nature of the phenomena occurring when electrons are ejected from metal surfaces by the impact of metastable atoms and positive ions was discussed. It was shown that electrons may be ejected by excited atoms at considerable distances from the surface, and by considering the case of an excited hydrogen atom at the centre of a spherical cavity in the metal the order of magnitude of the effects to be expected and the velocity distribution of the ejected electrons was determined. In this paper the theory will be extended in two directions.

Context. Spectral lines from N-like ions can be used to measure the temperature and density of various types of astrophysical plasmas. The atomic databases of astrophysical plasma modelling codes still have room for improvement in their electron-impact excitation data sets for N-like ions, especially for R-matrix data. This is particularly relevant for future observatories (e.g. Arcus), which will host high-resolution spectrometers. Aims. We aim to obtain level-resolved effective collision strengths for all transitions up to nl = 5d over a wide range of temperatures for N-like ions from O II to Zn XXIV (i.e. O+ to Zn23+) and to assess the accuracy of the present work. We also examine the impact of our new data on plasma diagnostics by modelling solar observations with CHIANTI. Methods. We carried out systematic R-matrix calculations for N-like ions, which included 725 fine-structure target levels in both the configuration interaction target and close-coupling collision expansions. The R-matrix intermediate coupling frame transformation method was used to calculate the collision strengths, while the AUTOSTRUCTURE code was used for the atomic structures. Results. We compare the present results for selected ions with those in archival databases and the literature. The comparison covers energy levels, oscillator strengths, and effective collision strengths. We show examples of improved plasma diagnostics when compared to CHIANTI models, which use only distorted wave data as well as some using previous R-matrix data. The electron-impact excitation data are archived according to the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) data class adf04 and will be available in OPEN-ADAS. The data can be used to improve the atomic databases for astrophysical plasma diagnostics.

The Impact

Studies of atmospheres of directly imaged extrasolar planets with high-resolution spectrographs have shown that their characterization is predominantly limited by noise on the stellar halo at the location of the studied exoplanet. An instrumental combination of high-contrast imaging and high spectral resolution that suppresses this noise and resolves the spectral lines can therefore yield higher quality spectra. We study the performance of the proposed HiRISE fiber coupling between the direct imager SPHERE and the spectrograph CRIRES+ at the Very Large Telescope for spectral characterization of directly imaged planets. Using end-to-end simulations of HiRISE we determine the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the detection of molecular species for known extrasolar planets in H and K bands, and compare them to CRIRES+. We investigate the ultimate detection limits of HiRISE as a function of stellar magnitude, and we quantify the impact of different coronagraphs and of the system transmission. We find that HiRISE largely outperforms CRIRES+ for companions around bright hosts like β Pictoris or 51 Eridani. For an H = 3.5 host, we observe a gain of a factor of up to 16 in observing time with HiRISE to reach the same S/N on a companion at 200 mas. More generally, HiRISE provides better performance than CRIRES+ in 2 h integration times between 50 and 350 mas for hosts with H < 8.5 and between 50 and 700 mas for H < 7. For fainter hosts like PDS 70 and HIP 65426, no significant improvements are observed. We find that using no coronagraph yields the best S/N when characterizing known exoplanets due to higher transmission and fiber-based starlight suppression. We demonstrate that the overall transmission of the system is in fact the main driver of performance. Finally, we show that HiRISE outperforms the best detection limits of SPHERE for bright stars, opening major possibilities for the characterization of future planetary companions detected by other techniques.
