Plating food beautifully has traditionally been seen as more of an art than a science. However, in recent years, a growing body of research in the field of empirical aesthetics has started to demonstrate that the art of beautiful plating can, in fact, be studied scientifically. What is more, the results of such research are now providing actionable insights concerning how to deliver the most aesthetically pleasing dishes. In fact, there is an intriguing parallel here between the visual aesthetics of painting and plating. It turns out that a number (but by no means all) of the aesthetic rules worked out previously for painting, such as balance, harmony, and the aesthetic oblique effect, also influence people’s judgments of aesthetic plating in much the same way. And while people undoubtedly do generally find larger portions of food more attractive, a number of the preferences that people have been demonstrated to exhibit appear to be “disinterested” (in the Kantian sense), thus qualifying them as genuinely aesthetic judgments. Recent chef/scientist collaborations that have started to deliberately elicit different kinds of affective responses from diners (such as, for example, surprise, “the aesthetic aha,” and perhaps even a sense of awe) are also discussed briefly. While questions concerning the cross-cultural generalizability of many of the findings summarized here remain (awaiting further research), progress is undoubtedly being made in this new and intriguing field of empirical aesthetics.

The aesthetic appeal of symmetry has been noted and discussed by artists, historians and scientists. To what extent this appeal is universal is a difficult question to answer. From a theoretical perspective, cross-cultural comparisons are important, because similarities would support the universality of the response to symmetry. Some pioneering work has focussed on comparisons between Britain and Egypt (Soueif & Eysenck, 1971, 1972), including both experts and naive subjects. These studies confirmed some degree of universal agreement in preferences for simple abstract symmetry. We revisited this comparison after almost half a century. We compared preferences of na?ve students in Egypt (n = 200) and Britain (n= 200) for 6 different classes of symmetry in novel, abstract stimuli. We used three different measurements of complexity: Gif ratio, Edge length and the average cell size (average blob size, ABS). The results support Soueif & Eysenck?s findings regarding preferences for reflectional and rotational symmetry, however they also throw new light on a greater preference for simplicity in Egyptian participants already noted by Soueif & Eysenck (1971).

Using Broadchurch and its American version Gracepoint as a case study, this article explores the aesthetic relationship between these two television programmes through an analysis of their visual and aural styles. The increasing proliferation of television-to-television adaptations and remakes necessitates revisiting the terminology to assess how it accommodates methodological approaches that extend beyond cross-cultural analyses. As narrative content and style are inextricably connected, this article attends to the complexity of employing existing terms to analyse the new version of a programme that simultaneously replicates and departs from the style and tone of its predecessor.

This work is the result of a study on the characteristics that define some of the museums created on the Silk Road. The approach to these museums has focused especially on the observation of the educational and heritage aspects that define these institutions. Since 1988, numerous actions related to the Silk Road have been promoted by UNESCO. This old trade route has now become a route of dialogue between cultures. Each museum studied is characterized by promoting local and national issues that define it. Educational issues stand out, since the tradition of silk production is very important in each place. Another aspect observed is that heritage issues manage to strengthen the characteristic features of each community. I have interviewed those responsible and personally observed their facilities and collections. Each museum has chosen to highlight local differential factors, enhancing the aesthetic arguments of cultural identity. Finally, I examine the specific case of the Valencia Silk Museum, the most recent creation museum but also the oldest institution. In the conclusions, I highlight the importance of education in most of these institutions.

Despite the fact that children’s literature is an important branch of the literary polysystem, it was neglected as a peripheral subject for long. It is not until in recent years that much attention is increasingly poured into it due to the rapid development of economy and booming cross-cultural exchanges. Currently, the newly-developed children’s literature is gradually occupying a dominant position and winning children’s favor. Translated works are no exception. Numerous classic children’s literary works from abroad are translated and retranslated. People tend to care much about translation activities, yet forget to formulate the theoretical framework. The thesis attempts to explore how to incorporate translation aesthetics into children’s literature translation. Children’s literature is characterized by its artistry, which is no doubt linked to children’s unique disposition. Children’s rich imagination, their acute sense of color, rhythm and children-favored animated images, etc. should be given priority in the process of translation. Based on Liu Miqing’s interpretation of translation aesthetics, the thesis will be developed from the perspective of the aesthetic object, the aesthetic subject and their respective aesthetic constituents. Further discussion is given as to the realization of aesthetic transference and representation in translating children’s literature under the guidance of translation aesthetics.

AbstractFor the time being, research mostly ignores complex cross-cultural phenomena if they are not connected to the globalisation discourse. This contribution is meant to work against this one-sidedness and is dedicated to cross-cultural reference patters which are most of all of a literary-aesthetic and hermeneutics-theoretical nature. The focus is on the reception of antiquity which, since the aesthetic revolution of about 1800, can no longer be clearly considered the continuation of a line of tradition but, by way of a distancing attitude, becomes particularly interesting for a cross-cultural view.
