Today, during the ‘fourth industrial revolution’ which is led by the Internet and the digital ecosystem it creates, schools are expected to achieve the development of not only the functional skills of literacy and numeracy but also of general knowledge. The apparent inadequacy of the standardized education system to respond to the needs and interests of 21st-century students urges researchers to adopt new forms of teaching as meaningful and high-quality teaching requires a more active use of innovative educational methods and tools. With the rapid development of IT globally, there is a tendency to utilize the capabilities of e-learning as a mode of distance learning since itcan function both independently of and in conjunction with conventional teaching. The varied applications of Web 2.0 tools create new possibilities in the educational sector. It provides the ability to develop innovative educational methods that transform students from passive recipients of information to knowledge creators through an active involvement in the learning process often within a modern interactive environment. This study presents the results of the implementation of a teaching intervention, with the use of a flexible and student-centered web system developed and used as complementary to the ‘Research Project’ course during the first term of the 2015-2016 school year. The ultimate goal of this effort was to highlight and consequently incorporate the use of a digital platform for student conferences which we implemented in schools as a means to research, learning, and skill development. The students had the opportunity to participate in a digital community which employed distance learning tools for communication, cooperation, and learning during a digital conference in which they had leading roles as writers and reviewers. The initial results of the pilot study indicated that the use of the digital platform increased the interest of students, supported the development of various skills and contributed to the overall improvement of the teaching and learning process.

Bina Nusantara University is a university with a rapid development of its e-learning system in the teaching-learning process and Chinese Department is one department using the e-learning system. This research was done to find out the role e-learning in improving the students’ interest in studying Chinese language. Data were collected by interviewing lecturers and distributing questionnaires to 120 students. Then, the data were tabulated and analysed. The result of the research shows that the respondents are familiar with Binusmaya – the e-learning system used – but they seldom use it because they do not think of its benefit. Thus, it can be concluded that Binusmaya does not both support the students of the Chinese Department in the teaching and learning process and in improving the students’ interest.

The rapid development of information and communication technology or what is known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has penetrated various fields of life, including education and teaching. With regard to learning, the use of information technology, in this case, e-learning, is needed not only for educators who are skilled at utilizing technology and technology for the manufacture of teaching materials, but a design is needed to carry out learning effectively. In a learning design (instructional design) there is a process to guide actors (actors) to design, develop, implement e-learning content by utilizing the available e-learning infrastructure and applications. At the next stage in the implementation of e-learning, there is an evaluation stage which is used to revise or adjust to the previous stages. A good educational institution must develop teachers by providing various facilities to support the teaching and learning process. Teachers can replace it with a new method in the form of video or audio that has been combined with the teaching material they want to convey. As technology develops, mobile or smartphone versions of e-Learning can be compatible with the features available in conventional learning so that the quality of content in the form of subject matter can be accessed properly.

With the rapid development of Internet, e-learning has become a new teaching and learning mode. However, lots of e-learning systems deployed on Internet are just electronic learning materials with very limited interactivity and diagnostic capability. This paper presents an integrated e-learning environment named iCLSR. Firstly, iCLSR provides an online environment for instruction and collaborative learning, which gets rid of the constraints of time and space. Second, online teaching and learning evaluation data from instructors and learners can be collected by iCLSR and can be analyzed with an improved PSK-means clustering algorithm. Third, the learning object lists can be recommended for learners based on online evaluation results and their learning history. The application of iCLSR demonstrates that it can recommend appropriate learning materials for learners, inspire communication between learners and instructors, save time for users and therefore improve the instructional effects and learning performance.

Technology has experienced very rapid development at this time and has brought changes and has a positive and negative impact on human life. One of the fields currently contaminated by technological developments is the field of education, especially in Indonesia, where at first the learning system was still manual-based and is currently developing into an online learning system. It is clear that various levels of schools and universities have used technology to support their learning process and apply it. One of the uses of technology in the field of education is learning management systems (NGOs) such as e-learning. The use of e-learning as a learning medium has a function to improve the quality of student learning and help improve student understanding in learning. However, there are still many schools that have not implemented e-learning in their teaching and learning process, such as high school (SMA). Therefore, the design of this e-learning application web design is expected to help several schools that require an online learning system that is user friendly so that schools can be better prepared to follow current development trends.

Universities in developing counties have come to understand that relying on only traditional classrooms is not sufficient to advance students’ knowledge and skills. The rapid development of information systems and internet technology has brought many educational innovations that can eliminate the boundaries of conventional teaching and learning. However, universities and their members including students are still experiencing challenges in understanding how to access e-learning practically and what type of direct benefits can be gained before e-learning can be implemented at their universities. Consequently, this study develops a pilot program for e-learning content based on quizzes and delivers that content to inexperienced students. The current work aims to measure the effectiveness of e-learning experiences on students after practicing through online quizzes. The findings indicate that students have better grades on their final post-test, which was taken after self-study and practice with online quizzes. All the third-year students (24 students in total) from the Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT), Yangon Technological University (YTU), Myanmar, participated in these pilot e-learning tests. The paper also examines the relationships among e-learning study-time, number of accesses, the number of online activities, the number of quiz activities and the improvements in outcomes of students. The findings of this research will be useful for the universities from Development in establishing e-learning education.

Although the problems of obtaining educational information in e-learning have been successfully resolved, the testing of obtained knowledge still requires a solution. Principles of knowledge assessment by means of tests in mathematics subjects administered in e-learning environment have been developed. An algorithm of component analysis and formula expression indexing for automatic analysis is suggested. This approach allows diversifying the types of questions for consequent verification of knowledge in computer systems. Modification of the formula editor provides the creation of templates for formula entering and the use of indexing algorithm of the expression elements. This makes it possible to avoid ambiguity of responses entered by students. Tasks with computer verification of an analytical symbolic expression can be applied to automate the verification of skills and knowledge in natural sciences, in particular, physics, mathematics, by appropriate modification of the template. Development of information technologies led to the development of new models of teaching and learning, especially in the field of mathematical sciences. It is shown that during experimental laboratory work in engineering subjects especially effective are those activities that combine the use of knowledge and skills acquired during the study of other related disciplines. It is shown that research based on interdisciplinary interaction has great potential. In addition, the application and advantages of expert systems in open education to improve the teaching-learning process are discussed. It is proposed to use expert systems in the designing of laboratory works and tests. It is also shown how expert systems should be used to optimize the process of creating adaptive type laboratory works and to formulate individual test tasks. The application of the expert system is illustrated on the example of Discrete Mathematics.

Abstract The new century has been witnessing a rapid development of information technologies, along with which e-learning has been increasingly popularized especially in this special pandemic time. This study, including 20 high-quality publications, meta-analytically examined gender differences in e-learning outcomes, e.g. e-learners’ self-efficacy, satisfaction, motivation, attitude, and performance, across the world. The study concludes that there are generally no significant gender differences in e-learning outcomes except in a few countries. For example, females significantly outperformed males in Spain and the UK. In Austria, India, and mixed countries (Chile and Spain), females hold significantly more positive attitudes towards e-learning than males. In the USA, females present significantly higher self-efficacy than males. Future research into the gender issue in e-learning across the world may adopt cross-disciplinary research methods except for a meta-analysis.
