Background: Gynecological disorders are the major challenge for Goat production profitability in Chuadanga, a goat dominating district of Bangladesh. To control the gynecological cases of goats in Chuadanga district, it is of utmost importance to estimate the prevalence of them along with their current therapeutic management. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from May, 2018 to April, 2019 on a total of 89 gynecological cases of goat to estimate the prevalence of different gynecological disorders along with drug prescribing patterns at Chuadanga Sadar Upazilla, Chuadanga, Bangladesh. Relevant data on different gynecological cases of goat were collected from the registered sheets of Upazilla Veterinary Hospital (UVH) and used for this study. Result: The highest prevalence of gynecological case was of anoestrous (20.2%) followed by abortion (18.0%), retained placenta (16.9%), pyometra (10.1%), dystocia (9.0%), repeat breeding (6.7%) and prolapse of the vagina (5.6%). The prevalence of metritis was 4.5% followed by milk fever (4.5%), prolapse of the rectum (3.4%) and postpartum bleeding (1.1%). Prostaglandin (25.0%) followed by a combination of oxytocin and calcium (18.8%) and combination of oxytetracycline and metronidazole (18.8%) were commonly prescribed drugs for treating abortion cases. Vitamin AD3E (33.3%) was prescribed the highest for treating anoestrous. A combination of oxytocin and oxytetracycline (33.3%), followed by oxytocin (26.6%) were predominantly prescribed for treating retained placenta. This study reveals the overall burden of reproductive disorders of goat along with drug prescribing patterns at the Chuadanga, Bangladesh. This outcome will be supportive to know the better treatment strategy against reproductive disorders in goat.

Abstract. Relationships between some reproduetive disorders in the first 3 lactations of Holstein Friesian cows were investigated for 1886 lactation records. Multiple-trait maximum likelihood procedure which included sire cow within sire as random effect and herd, parity, month and year of calving as fixed effects was used to estimate heritabilities and repeatabilities for the studied traits. Abortion within 60 days, retained placenta, ovarian cysts calving difficulty, dystocia, mastitis, and calving type were coded as 0 and 1 for heritability and repeatability estimations. Pooled and separate analysis were applied on the first 3 lactations. Abortion within 60 days retained placenta, ovarian cysts, calving difficulty, dystocia, mastitis, abortion no. and calving type had moderate heritability estimates which ranged from 0.15 to 0.24. Low heritability estimates and a weak sire variance component were obtained for milk fever. The most frequent disorder traits were mastitis, milk fever abortion no calving type and calving difficulty (0.37 to 0.72). Up word trend of heritability estimates with advancing order of lactation was observed for mastitis, abortion within 60 days, and abortion no. while heritability estimates for calving type, calving difficulty and dystocia had a back word trend. These results help in determining the suitable age of selection. Additive genetic variances and covariances among the studied traits have indicated reducing incidence rates if selection index procedure used in this filed. Strong negative genetic correlation between milk fever and abortion no. (−0.429) while negative phenotypic correlations between all studied traits were not more than −0.120 which was estimated for calving difficulty and abortion no.

A retrospective-epidemiological study of cattle diseases/disorders was conducted at Baghabari Milking zone of Bangladesh starting from June 2008 to May 2012. Out of 22066 cases, 73.95% and 17.16% diseases/disorders were recorded in cows and calves respectively. About 58.42%, 23.56% 12.48% and 5.54% cases were general and systemic, infectious, production and reproductive and surgical diseases/disorders respectively. The most common general and systemic diseases/disorders were fever (17.91%), anorexia (17.55%) and weakness (14.71%). Among infectious diseases, 78.2%, 7.02% and 6.32% respectively were mastitis, FMD and black quarter. The predominant production and reproductive diseases were milk fever (33.48%), repeat breeder (17.10%), retained placenta (14.27%), metritis (13.11) and anestrous (11.44%). The most common surgical disorders were navel ill (46.9%), wound (20.19%), abscess (8.99%) and urolithiasis (8.67%). Statistically significant variation of diseases in different seasons was also noted. We recommend for undertaking research focusing on the causes of fever, anorexia and weakness as they were the most predominant general and systemic disorders of cattle. Control measure should be initiated to reduce the burden of mastitis, repeat breeder, retained placenta and anestrous which were most common production and reproductive diseases in the study area. A case control study may help to reveal the factors responsible for such a high level of occurrence of navel ill in calves. This study generated information which is valuable not only for the clinicians, researchers, animal health companies and policy planners but also for the academicians to update veterinary curricula.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v11i2.19138Bangl.
