Application of surface roughness to rotating mechanical bodies will result into performance degradation. In Aviation Industry, one of the most affecting causes for performance or efficiency degradation of gas turbine engine is the blade surface roughness. The aerosols which are very small particles in the atmosphere having diameters in the microns, impinges to the compressor blade inside the aircraft engine at higher altitudes. The aerosols damages surfaces of the compressor blades. Despite of having small dimensions, due to higher velocity of the aircraft, aerosol’s impinging creates roughened surfaces and fouling. This paper is an attempt to numerically evaluate the performance degradation of the single stage transonic axial flow compressor due to uniform roughness created by the aerosols. Various cases with different roughness on various sections of the blades are analyzed to study and identify which section of the blade is more influenced by roughness. The transonic axial flow compressor has a capability of producing 1.36 stage total pressure ratio, swallowing air mass flow rate of 23 kg/s at rated design speed of 12930 rpm is used for the steady state numerical analysis. A systematic steady state 3-dimensional numerical study using solver with SST k-ω turbulence model has been carried out to evaluate the impact of blade surface roughness on the performance of compressor stage. Moreover, cases with the aerosols having different dimensions and their resulting effect is also studied to find out how performance varies when the aircraft enters into atmosphere having big aerosols from the atmosphere having smaller one and vice-e-versa.

AbstractIt is well known that the surface topography of a part can affect its mechanical performance, which is typical in additive manufacturing. In this context, we report about the surface modification of additive manufactured components made of Titanium 64 (Ti64) and Scalmalloy®, using a pulsed laser, with the aim of reducing their surface roughness. In our experiments, a nanosecond-pulsed infrared laser source with variable pulse durations between 8 and 200 ns was applied. The impact of varying a large number of parameters on the surface quality of the smoothed areas was investigated. The results demonstrated a reduction of surface roughness Sa by more than 80% for Titanium 64 and by 65% for Scalmalloy® samples. This allows to extend the applicability of additive manufactured components beyond the current state of the art and break new ground for the application in various industrial applications such as in aerospace.

This paper proposes and presents the chemical modification of linear hydroxyethers (LHE) with different molecular weights (380, 640, and 1830 g/mol) with the addition of three types of rubbers (polysulfide rubber (PSR), polychloroprene rubber (PCR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)). The main purpose of choosing this type of modification and the materials used was the possibility to use it in industrial settings. The modification process was conducted for a very wide range of modifier additions (rubber) per 100 g LHE. The materials obtained in the study were subjected to strength tests in order to determine the effect of the modification on functional properties. Mechanical properties of the modified materials were improved after the application of the modifier (rubber) to polyhydroxyether (up to certain modifier content). The most favorable changes in the tested materials were registered in the modification of LHE-1830 with PSR. In the case of LHE-380 and LHE-640 modified in cyclohexanol (CH) and chloroform (CF) solutions, an increase in the values of the tested properties was also obtained, but to a lesser extent than for LHE-1830. The largest changes were registered for LHE-1830 with PSR in CH solution: from 12.1 to 15.3 MPa for compressive strength tests, from 0.8 to 1.5 MPa for tensile testing, from 0.8 to 14.7 MPa for shear strength, and from 1% to 6.5% for the maximum elongation. The analysis of the available literature showed that the modification proposed by the authors has not yet been presented in any previous scientific paper.

The new era of engineering society focuses on the utilization of the potential advantage of carbon nanomaterials. The machinability facets of nanocarbon materials are passing through an initial stage. This article emphasizes the machinability evaluation and optimization of Milling performances, namely Surface roughness (Ra), Cutting force (Fc), and Material removal rate (MRR) using a recently developed Grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWOA). The Taguchi theory-based L27 orthogonal array (OA) was employed for the Machining (Milling) of polymer nanocomposites reinforced by Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT). The second-order polynomial equation was intended for the analysis of the model. These mathematical models were used as a fitness function in the GWOA to predict machining performances. The ANOVA outcomes efficiently explore the impact of machine parameters on Milling characteristics. The optimal combination for lower surface roughness value is 1.5 MWCNT wt.%, 1500 rpm of spindle speed, 50 mm/min of feed rate, and 3 mm depth of cut. For lower cutting force, 1.0 wt.%, 1500 rpm, 90 mm/min feed rate and 1 mm depth of cut and the maximize MRR was acquired at 0.5 wt.%, 500 rpm, 150 mm/min feed rate and 3 mm depth of cut. The deviation of the predicted value from the experimental value of Ra, Fc, and MRR are found as 2.5, 6.5 and 5.9%, respectively. The convergence plot of all Milling characteristics suggests the application potential of the GWO algorithm for quality improvement in a manufacturing environment.

Silicon dioxide, in the form of nanoparticles, possesses unique physicochemical properties (size, shape, and a large surface to volume ratio). Therefore, it is one of the most promising materials used in biomedicine. In this paper, we compare the biological effects of both mesoporous silica nanoparticles extracted from Urtica dioica L. and pyrogenic material. Both SEM and TEM investigations confirmed the size range of tested nanoparticles was between 6 and 20 nanometers and their amorphous structure. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds and intracellular ROS were determined in relation to cells HMEC-1 and erythrocytes. The cytotoxic effects of SiO2 NPs were determined after exposure to different concentrations and three periods of incubation. The same effects for endothelial cells were tested under the same range of concentrations but after 2 and 24 h of exposure to erythrocytes. The cell viability was measured using spectrophotometric and fluorimetric assays, and the impact of the nanoparticles on the level of intracellular ROS. The obtained results indicated that bioSiO2 NPs, present higher toxicity than pyrogenic NPs and have a higher influence on ROS production. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles show good hemocompatibility but after a 24 h incubation of erythrocytes with silica, the increase in hemolysis process, the decrease in osmotic resistance of red blood cells, and shape of erythrocytes changed were observed.

Sustainable development is a global objective that aims to address the societal challenge of climate action, the environment, resource efficiency, and raw materials. In this sense, an important strategy is the promotion of green packaging, that is, the use of sustainable materials and designs for the packaging of goods. In recent years, many research works have been published in the specialised area covering the different perspectives and dimensions of green packaging. However, to our knowledge, no previous investigations have analysed the research activity on green packaging from business and consumer perspectives. The present study intends to fill this gap by analysing all of the publications found in the Scopus database with the help of visual analytic tools, including word clouds and Gephi network visualization software. More specifically, our study analyses the impact of green packaging from business and consumer viewpoints, including some specific issues such as the design and materials used in green packaging, green packaging costs, marketing strategies and corporate social responsibility related to green packaging, and the impact of green packaging in waste management, the circular economy, logistics, and supply chain management. The results obtained reveal the growing interest of scholars and researchers in all of these dimensions, as is made patently clear by the increasing number of journal publications in recent years. The practical implications of this study are significant, given the growing awareness among companies and consumers about the importance of the promotion of sustainable development through green packaging alternatives. More specifically, the results of this research could be very useful for all of those agents who are interested in learning about the main lines of research being developed in the field of green packaging.

A wave state related sea surface roughness parameterization scheme that takes into account the impact of sea foam is proposed in this study. Using eight observational datasets, the performances of two most widely used wave state related parameterizations are examined under various wave conditions. Based on the different performances of two wave state related parameterizations under different wave state, and by introducing the effect of sea foam, a new sea surface roughness parameterization suitable for low to extreme wind conditions is proposed. The behaviors of drag coefficient predicted by the proposed parameterization match the field and laboratory measurements well. It is shown that the drag coefficient increases with the increasing wind speed under low and moderate wind speed conditions, and then decreases with increasing wind speed, due to the effect of sea foam under high wind speed conditions. The maximum values of the drag coefficient are reached when the 10 m wind speeds are in the range of 30–35 m/s.

In order to decrease accidents of slips and falls, COFs of rubber samples with different surface roughness were measured by Brungraber Mark II. And the correlation coefficients between roughness parameters and COF were calculated. The rusults have shown that the COF increases with surface roughness and the correlation coefficient between Sq and COF is highest. In general, almost all the roughness parameters used in the study have high correlation with COF. Parameters had the highest correlation with COF depends on the materials used and test conditions.
