Considering works published in the literature for more than a decade (period from January 2008 till June 2019), this paper provides an overview of recent applications of the so-called “solar furnaces”, their reactors, process chambers and related devices, aiming specifically at the processing of (solid) materials. Based on the author’s own experience, some prospects on future trends are also presented. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the tremendous potentialities of the usage of solar heat for materials processing, but also to reveal the necessity of further developing solar-driven high-temperature technologies (which are required to displace the use of electricity or natural gas). In particular, it is essential to improve the temperature homogeneity conditions inside reaction chambers for materials processing using solar heat. Moreover, new innovative modular systems, practical and flexible, for capture, concentration, control and conduction of concentrated solar radiation are suggested. Solar thermal technologies for the production of electricity, as well as solar thermochemical processes for production of gases or liquids, are outside the scope of this review.

AbstractMethods for forming high quality re-crystallizing polysilicon films are being actively studied due to their ability to provide significant improvement to polysilicon Thin-Film-Transistors (TFT). Recently, a simple Metal-Induced-Lateral-Crystallization (MILC) method with nickel, together with high temperature annealing, can result in single crystal like polysilicon film [1]. TFTs fabricated on this so-called Large-grain Silicon-On-Insulator (LPSOI) can achieve SOI MOSFET performance especially for making small dimension devices. This paper reports that the polysilicon grain quality can be further enhanced by crystallizing the polysilicon film into the shape of long-wire.The crystallization procedure started with a regular Nickel-Induced-Lateral-Crystallization (NILC) process at 560 °C as described in [1]. The film was then etched into narrow wires, which were parallel to the direction of nickel propagation. The NILC second anneal at 900 °C was then performed on these silicon wire. Through surface energy anisotropy stimulated grain expansion in the NILC high-temperature second annealing, enhanced grain quality beyond that on planar polysilicon film.Transistor fabricated on these wire is similar to gate-all-around structure as that of FinFET [2]. Much better scalability to the deep submicron region was observed for these wire transistors than regular planar TFTs formed on the same NILC film. Experimental results showed that a wide transistor formed by the parallel combination of the quantum wire transistors much higher current drive than a TFT on the same NILC film with equivalent width.

AbstractInternal cone temperatures recorded in the mornings and in the afternoons demonstrated marked differences between sunny and shaded sites. Analysis of variance confirmed differences between treatment as highly significant. High and low cone temperatures coincided with high and low ground temperatures. The average correlation coefficient relating cone and ground temperatures was highly significant, while that for cone temperatures and cone size was non-significant.Heavy insect mortality occurred in cones exposed to direct solar radiation but mortality remained relatively low in the cones left in the shade. The greatest high-temperature mortality occurred during summer between late June and early August.

The Core

The paper presents the validation of physical properties of refractory concrete with heavy filling, using the measurements under high temperature, assumed for the construction of a thermal storage. The whole system, consisting of the storage core and of the insulation container, is characterized by non-stationary thermal transfer, supplied from solar radiation into the core. The validation of behaviour of the system (including its sleeping state and the dynamics of charging and discharging) is needed for the optimization of its size parameters.
