Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine (TIM) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) remain the most ancient yet living traditions. There has been increased global interest in traditional medicine. Efforts to monitor and regulate herbal drugs and traditional medicine are underway. China has been successful in promoting its therapies with more research and science-based approach, while Ayurveda still needs more extensive scientific research and evidence base. This review gives an overview of basic principles and commonalities of TIM and TCM and discusses key determinants of success, which these great traditions need to address to compete in global markets.

One aim of the student elective during medical training is to see different cultural and social aspects of practice. This article concerns a student visit from the University of Wales College of Medicine to the Imperial City of Xi'an in China, which offers a medical school with teaching in both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. The visiting student can learn of the traditional theories and methods of diagnosis and have a chance to see and use treatment techniques such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, herbal medicine, Chinese massage and qigong. The Chinese people in general use both Western and traditional medicine, trying one and switching to the other if the first is ineffective, and Chinese traditional doctors make use of Western diagnostic techniques when necessary.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as a complex medical science which reflects philosophical principles and embodies large dialectical thought, is used to place the human body into a large system for observation. Acupuncture as a vital part of TCM, has been practiced to treat various diseases and symptoms. However, acupuncture is also facing severe challenges resulted from insufficient modern scientific research. Nowadays, the holistic effects of acupuncture can be researched by some modern approaches, such as the systems biology and fMRI technique. It is believed that having a better understand will greatly promote acupuncture research and be beneficial to scientization and modernization of acupuncture.
