Structural and electronic properties of pentacene/pentacenequinone thin films prepared on various solid-state substrates by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique are reported. Amorphous structure of the prepared films has been proved by XRD measurements. Oxygen-related defects have been identified in the Langmuir–Blodgett films as a consequence of the exposure of pentacene Langmuir layer to air. Crystallization induced by thermal treatment of the prepared amorphous thin films has been observed. Electronic properties of pentacene/ pentacenequinone Langmuir–Blodgett films have been investigated in the contact-less architecture using electrochemical techniques. The energy band diagram of the amorphous pentacene/pentacenequinone Langmuir–Blodgett film on a metallic surface was constructed from the obtained electrochemical data.

Different LB films of poly(octadecene-co-maleic anhydride), PMAO, poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) partial 2 butoxy ethyl ester cumene terminated, PS-MA-BEE, and Gemini surfactant ethyl-bis(dimethyl octadecylammonium bromide), 18-2-18, have been used to study the effect of the substrate coating on the surface self-assembly of CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Results show that all the “coating molecules” avoid the 3D aggregation of QDs observed when these nanoparticles are directly deposited on mica. Different morphologies were observed depending on the molecules used as coatings, and this was related to the surface properties, such as wetting ability, and the morphology of the coating LB films.

Frictional characteristics of mesoporous SiO2 thin films were evaluated with different pore sizes. The films were manufactured by sol-gel and self-assembly methods to have a porous structure. The pores on the surface may play as the outlet of wear particle and the storage of lubricant so that the surface interactions could be improved. The pores were exposed on the surface by chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) or plasma-etching after forming the porous films. The ball-on-disk tests with mesoporous SiO2 thin films on glass specimen were conducted at sliding speed of 15rpm and a load of 0.26N. The results show considerable dependency of friction on pore size of mesoporous SiO2 thin films. The friction coefficient decreased as increasing the pore size. CMP process was very useful to expose the pores on the surface.
