Water is the most crucial thing to mankind and so its contamination by various agencies is posing a threat to the natural balance. So, in the present work, the efficiency of various adsorbents derived from plant waste, to remove different dyes from aqueous solution was evaluated. Parameters for study were contact time, concentration and pH. Various combinations of plant ashes were used for the study. It was found that adsorbent prepared from the combination of orange peels, pomegranate and banana peels ashes, exhibited good adsorption capacity for methylene blue, congo red and crystal violet. All these dyes were completely removed from the aqueous solution while methyl orange was not removed. Congo red was removed completely within 40 min of contact with the adsorbent while methyl orange took 3 hrs to be removed to the extent of 48% only. The adsorption coefficient of congo red was found to be 2.33 while value for methylene blue and crystal violet was 1 and 1.66 respectively. The characterization of adsorbent was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy and IR spectroscopy. SEM image revealed the surface of adsorbent to be made of differential pores. From the results it became evident that the low-cost adsorbent could be used as a replacement for costly traditional methods of removing colorants from water.

Impregnation of mesoporous silica MCM-41 on metal organic framework type HKUST-1 or often called CuBTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) has been successfully carried out by solvothermal methods in a solvent mixture of water, ethanol and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The XRD patterns of the obtained solids showed that MCM-41/HKUST-1 composites had the same crystalline phase as pure as HKUST-1. SEM images revealed that the impregnation of the mesoporous silica to HKUST-1 did not alter the surface morphology of the original HKUST-1, which had octahedral shapes. In addition, the thermal stability of the MCM-41/HKUST-1 composites reached 302 °C, increased by 292 °C in comparison to the HKUST-1, even though the impregnation process resulted in a decreased in the specific surface area of the composites. Furthermore, MCM-41/HKUST-1 composites showed outstanding performance as adsorbent of methylene blue and Congo red in aqueous solutions. Results of adsorption studies showed that a pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm were observed for both types of dyes.

Background: We report a case of primary systemic amyloidosis in a 78-year-old Caucasian woman presented as a nonhealing ulcer on the right thigh for 3 months. Histopathology of the skin revealed widely thickened walls of middermal and subcutaneous vessels from deposition of amorphous eosinophilic material that stained positively with Congo red and crystal violet. Objective: This case represents a very unusual presentation of primary systemic amyloidosis, one in which the cutaneous manifestations provided the first signs of a devastatingly widespread multiorgan infiltration of amyloid protein. Conclusion: This presentation of the disease may signify an advanced stage with a grave prognosis as our patient passed away 3 months after development of the cutaneous ulceration.
