ABSTRACTMantis shrimp of the species Neogonodactylus oerstedii occupy small burrows in shallow waters throughout the Caribbean. These animals use path integration, a vector-based navigation strategy, to return to their homes while foraging. Here, we report that path integration in N. oerstedii is prone to error accumulated during outward foraging paths and we describe the search behavior that N. oerstedii employs after it fails to locate its home following the route provided by its path integrator. This search behavior forms continuously expanding, non-oriented loops that are centered near the point of search initiation. The radius of this search is scaled to the animal's positional uncertainty during path integration, improving the effectiveness of the search. The search behaviors exhibited by N. oerstedii bear a striking resemblance to search behaviors in other animals, offering potential avenues for the comparative examination of search behaviors and how they are optimized in disparate taxa.

The present research aims to explore the impact of mentoring relationship on college graduates’ job search behavior among Chinese undergraduate students by examining the mediator of job search intention and the moderator of job search self-efficacy. A two-wave survey study was conducted in China ( N = 594). Our findings show a positive indirect relation between mentoring and college graduates’ job search behaviors through job search intention. The graduates’ job search self-efficacy positively moderated the indirect relationship such that when job search self-efficacy was higher, the influence of mentoring on behavior via job search intention was stronger. These findings extend the literature by clarifying how and when mentoring facilitates graduates’ job search behaviors and provide practical implications for facilitating a smooth school-to-work transition in China. As the first study that empirically clarifies why (through job search intention) and when (job search self-efficacy) mentoring function is positively related to job search behavior among Chinese undergraduate students, the present study contributes to the existing mentoring and job search literature. Future research is encouraged to extend the findings by integrating theory of planned behavior (TPB) with self-regulation theory toward deepening current understanding of how and when mentoring can contribute to a student’s success in job search behavior.

Abstract Recent specimens of Spiculidendron were found on Late Pleistocene (21,400–22,500 BP) cold-water corals from the sea floor at 457 m depth of the inter-atoll Kardiva Channel of the eastern row of the Maldives archipelago. Spiculidendron and other dendrophryid foraminifera (Rhizammina-like forms) exclusively colonized specimens of the genus Enallopsammia, which was characterized by a phosphatic-stain surface. The Spiculidendron wall was composed of sponge spicules, elongated diatom frustules, tests of juvenile benthic and planktic foraminifera, and calcareous nannoplankton, among other materials. Sponge spicules and elongated diatom frustules were arranged longitudinally, with foraminiferal tests and other bioclasts packed in between, indicating that the agglutination process of Spiculidendron is selective with respect to the manner of growth. In the most distal parts of the branches, only sponge spicules and elongated diatom frustules were present, working as guides for the test construction, prior to the agglutination of juvenile foraminiferal tests and other bioclasts. Moreover, in the sediment associated with the coral fragments, 94 species of benthic foraminifera were identified, an assemblage distinct from the taxa incorporated into the agglutinated Spiculidendron tests. The process of wall growth is complex and ordered. This foraminifer, as well as the Rhizammina-like specimens, tolerates dysoxic conditions (0.896 ml/l) and low temperature (12°C). This observation represents a new record of Spiculidendron from the Indian Ocean and from deeper (aphotic) environments than previously reported from the shallow waters of the Caribbean. A cryptobiontic habitat is interpreted for Spiculidendron.

Both theoretical models of job search and empirical research findings suggest that job-search behavior is not a unidimensional construct. This chapter addresses the multidimensionality of job-search behavior and provides a systematic review of the different job-search behaviors and sources studied in the job-search literature and their relationships with antecedent variables and employment outcomes. Organized within three major dimensions (effort/intensity, content/direction, and temporal/persistence), job-search effort and intensity, job-search strategies, preparatory and active job-search behaviors, formal and informal job sources, specific job-search behaviors, job-search quality, job-search dynamics, and job-search persistence are discussed. This review strongly suggests that it is essential to consider all the dimensions of job-search behavior for understanding job-search success in both practice and research. This study points to a number of key implications for job seekers and employment counselors as well as crucial directions for future research.

The present study examines the diversity of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955 in the western Atlantic. Five species are described from the shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea: Salmoneus hispaniolensis sp. nov., from the southern coast of the Dominican Republic; S. camaroncito sp. nov. from Panama and Honduras; S. armatus sp. nov. from Panama; S. degravei sp. nov. from Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Tobago; and S. wehrtmanni sp. nov. from Panama, Honduras, Mexico (Yucatan) and Tobago. In addition, S. ortmanni (Rankin, 1898) is reported from new localities in Panama and Costa Rica; S. carvachoi Anker, 2007 from Mexico (Yucatan) and the Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Paraíba; S. cavicolus Felder & Manning, 1986 from Turks and Caicos Islands; and S. setosus Manning & Chace, 1990 from Mexico (Yucatan). Most specimens were collected at shallow depths (0.5–2 m), on soft bottoms ranging from mudsilt to coarse sand mixed rubble, under rocks or coral rubble; S. degravei sp. nov. appears to be associated with burrows of the callianassid ghost shrimp, Neocallichirus grandimana (Gibbes, 1850).

Search engines provide ranked information based on the query given by the user. Understanding user search behavior is an important task for satisfaction of the users with the needed information. Understanding user search behaviors and recommending more information or more sites to the user is an emerging task. The work is based on the queries given by the user, the amount of time the user spending on the particular page, the number of clicks done by the user particular URL. These details will be available in the dataset of web search log. The web search log is nothing but the log which contains the user searching activities and other details like machine ID, browser ID, timestamp, query given by the user, URL accessed etc., four things considered as the important: 1) Extraction of tasks from the sequence of queries given by the user 2) suggesting some similar query to the user 3) ranking URLs based on the implicit user behaviors 4) increasing web page utilities based on the implicit behaviors. For increasing the web page utility and ranking the URLs predicting implicit user behavior is a needed task. For each of these four things designing and implementation of some algorithms and techniques are needed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness.

Purpose – Mobile users increasingly employ location-based map searches in their daily lives. However, it is still relatively unknown about mobile users’ map related search behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to discover the interactions between the users and mobile map search systems, to reveal the shortcomings of existing mobile map search functions, and to propose improvement suggestions. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a set of controlled user experiments performed on the Baidu mobile phone map, this paper empirically examines users’ location-based mobile search behaviors, such as timing, metering, judging and so on. This paper also conducts statistical correlation tests to generate relation tables and diagrams regarding each variable, for example, the relation between the retrieval time and the retrieval steps. Findings – The results indicate that mobile map users have two important characteristics in their search behaviors: first, mobile map users always follow the single search path. Second, the mobile map search efficiency of users is always low. Research limitations/implications – The situation simulation testing method is mainly used for the construction of a mobile information search behavior environment, which may make the users be nervous and have some effect on the search efficiency. Practical implications – Based on the identification of user behaviors, this paper provides suggestions to optimize and improve mobile map search systems. Originality/value – This paper studies users’ mobile map search behavior based on location and explores the features of user behavior from the perspective of human-computer interaction.

Desert ants, Cataglyphis fortis , are equipped with remarkable skills that enable them to navigate efficiently. When travelling between the nest and a previously visited feeding site, they perform path integration (PI), but pinpoint the nest or feeder by following odour plumes. Homing ants respond to nest plumes only when the path integrator indicates that they are near home. This is crucial, as homing ants often pass through plumes emanating from foreign nests and do not discriminate between the plume of their own and that of a foreign nest, but should absolutely avoid entering a wrong nest. Their behaviour towards food odours differs greatly. Here, we show that in ants on the way to food, olfactory information outweighs PI information. Although PI guides ants back to a learned feeder, the ants respond to food odours independently of whether or not they are close to the learned feeding site. This ability is beneficial, as new food sources—unlike foreign nests—never pose a threat but enable ants to shorten distances travelled while foraging. While it has been shown that navigating C. fortis ants rely strongly on PI, we report here that the ants retained the necessary flexibility in the use of PI.
