Vibration testing, particularly when performed in reliability test chambers, is very costly. Design considerations for vibration expander heads that will accept several test specimens for simultaneous testing are discussed in this report. Well-designed expander heads will provide more meaningful results and reduce test time and costs through maximum utilization of test hardware. This article, the first of a three-part series, discusses natural frequency equations for square, constant thickness expander heads. Parts II and III will cover damping equations for square, constant thickness expander heads and the inverted truncated pyramid expander head. Complete derivations accompany each expander head equation.

Burr distribution is considered as a probability model for the lifetime of products. Reliability test plans are those sampling plans in which items from a lot are put to test to make conclusions on the estimate of life, and hence acceptance or rejection of the submitted lot is done. A test plan designs the termination time of the experiment and the termination number for a given sample size and producer’s risk. Tables and graphs were provided for certain specific values of designs, and it is useful to verify the optimum reliability test plan realized by Burr distributions.

Apart from other probability models, Dagum distribution is also an effective probability distribution that can be considered for studying the lifetime of a product/material. Reliability test plans deal with sampling procedures in which items are put to test to decide from the life of the items to accept or reject a submitted lot. In the present study, a reliability test plan is proposed to determine the termination time of the experiment for a given sample size, producers risk and termination number when the quantity of interest follows Dagum distribution. In addition to that, a comparison between the proposed and the existing reliability test plans is carried out with respect to time of the experiment. In the end, an example illustrates the results of the proposed plan.

Reliability tests are mandatory to evaluate new products prior to their release. The proper determination of a reliability test plan is crucial because an erroneous test plan can be very costly and misleading. This paper describes a probability-based method of designing a reliability demonstration test plan using both field customer usage and historical bench life test data. Statistical distribution analysis, Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) technique, and zero-failure test method are integrated into the probability-based method to create test plans that can more accurately evaluate product reliabilities for the required product service life using a small number of test samples.

Purpose This paper considers a series system consisting of n different components having unknown and variable failure rates, where the lifetime of components follow exponential distribution having non-constant failure rates. Moreover, the failure rates are bounded by above and are dependent on environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, through linear relationship. The purpose of this paper is to design a component reliability test plan for such a series system with an unknown variable failure rate. Design/methodology/approach The reliability of the system is estimated with the help of the unbiased estimator of failure rate. The testing procedure is stopped when a fixed number of failures occur for each component. Findings An optimal reliability test plan is designed and the resultant non-linear integer optimization problem is formulated satisfying the constraints of producer’s and consumer’s risks. The obtained results are compared with the results available in the literature. Some examples are considered to illustrate the approach. Originality/value It is observed that use of prior information in the form of an upper bound and incorporation of environmental factors have the advantage of savings in the total testing cost.

Abstract In this paper, a generalization of the Harris family of distributions, namely, the Harris generalized linear exponential distribution is discussed. The use of the model is established by fitting it to a real data set. Also, we derive a reliability test plan for acceptance or rejection of a lot of products submitted for inspection with lifetimes following this distribution.
