Intestinal Microbiota as a Source of Probiotic Bifidobacterium Strains: Challenges and Opportunities for the Development of Functional Foods

The effects of immunomodulatory activity of two types of carboxymethyl pachymaran (CMP-1 and CMP-2) on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced mice were investigated. Both CMP-1 and CMP-2 were found to restore the splenomegaly and alleviate the spleen lesions and the mRNA expressions of TLR4, MyD88, p65 and NF-κB in spleen were also increased. CMP-1 and CMP-2 could enhance the immunity by increasing the levels of TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ, Ig-A and Ig-G in serum. In addition, CMP-1 could increase the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and reduce the relative richness of Firmicutes at the phylum level. CMP-1 and CMP-2 could reduce the relative abundance Erysipelatoclostridum at the genus level. CMP-1 and CMP-2 might enhance the immune function of immunosuppression mice by regulating the gene expression in the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and changing the composition and abundance of the intestinal microbiota. The results suggested that CMP-1 and CMP-2 would be as potential immunomodulatory agents in functional foods.

In order to promote functional foods, the consumer should be informed about the health benefits that can be done through e-commerce. A survey of consumers living in St. Petersburg showed that only 18% of respondents carry out the order of food products via the Internet with the immediate prospect of increasing their number by 19%. An analysis of the websites of online stores, the assortment of food products on the example of bread and bakery products and the terms for their delivery and return revealed the main reasons for restricting online purchases of food products: the absence of significant differences in the assortment between online stores and retail outlets; lack of confidence in the delivery of quality and fresh products; the difficulty of returning products. An additional restriction on the purchase of functional foods is the lack of information about their health benefits, both on the websites of online stores and in the labelling. It is proposed to clearly position functional products on the websites of online stores in the bread and bakery segment, providing them with additional information resources about health benefits; create an additional service “Baking to order” with special delivery terms.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is very common in both men and women. Phytochemicals such as polysaccharide alkaloids, polyphenols, diterpenoids among others, have been used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The mechanisms of action of these compounds on cancer cells include molecular targets in the apoptosis, proliferation, metastasis and anti-inflammatory signaling pathways. At the level of the whole organism, they improve the intestinal microbiota, which plays an important role in the initiation and progression of CRC. Recent research is aimed at obtaining and modifying phytochemicals to improve their effectiveness, safety and their inclusion in functional foods, but more studies are needed to validate their properties.

AbstractMany chronic conditions, including smoking, have been shown to be associated with modifications in the gut microbiota and to remedy the effects of these changes, functional foods such as prebiotics have shown beneficial effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate changes in the bacterial population of Escherichia coli in the intestinal microbiota of rats submitted to passive smoke and to the supplementation of prebiotics incorporated into the basal diet. The animals were divided into: Control Group (CG) = basal diet; Smoking Control Group (GCT) = basal diet with exposure to smoking; Prebiotic Group (GP) = basal diet incorporated with 1g of Immunowall® per kg of diet; Prebiotic Tobacco Group (GPT) = basal diet incorporated with 1g of ImmunowallTM per kg of diet with exposure to smoking. The animals were exposed to the smoke twice a day for 180 days. The obtained data were analyzed through the nonparametric Kruklla-Wallis test. Bacterial populations were amplified by real-time PCR. The results of this study revealed a significant decrease (p = 0.04 and p = 0.01) in Escherichia coli population in the group of animals supplemented with prebiotics in the intestinal microbiota of rats exposed and not exposed to cigarette smoke reinforcing the modulating effect of potential pathogens on the intestinal microbiota by functional foods.

Abstract: Many bioactive peptides have been described from marine sources and much marine biomass is still not explored or utilized in products. Marine peptides can be developed into a variety of products, and there is a significant interest in the use of bioactive peptides from marine sources towards nutraceuticals or functional foods. We present here a mini review collecting the knowledge about the value chain of bioactive peptides from marine sources used in nutraceuticals and functional foods. Many reports describe bioactive peptides from marine sources, but in order to make these available to the consumers in commercial products it is important to connect the bioactivities associated with these peptides to commercial opportunities and possibilities. In this mini review, we present challenges and opportunities for the commercial use of bioactive peptides in nutraceuticals and functional food products. We start the paper by introducing approaches for isolation and identification of bioactive peptides and candidates for functional food. We further discuss market driven innovation targeted to ensure that isolated peptides and suggested products are marketable and acceptable by targeted consumers. To increase the commercial potential and ensure sustainability of the identified bioactive peptides and products, we discuss scalability, regulatory frameworks, production possibilities and the shift towards greener technologies. Finally, we discuss some commercial products from marine peptides within the functional food market. We discuss around the placement these products within the larger picture of the commercial sphere of functional food products from bioactive peptides.
