Abstract Optical metasurfaces is a rapidly developing research field driven by its exceptional applications for creating easy-to-integrate ultrathin planar optical devices. The tight confinement of the local electromagnetic fields in resonant photonic nanostructures can boost many optical effects and offer novel opportunities for the nanoscale control of light–matter interactions. However, once the structure-only metasurfaces are fabricated, their functions will be fixed, which limits it to make breakthroughs in practical applications. Recently, persistent efforts have led to functional multiplexing. Besides, dynamic light manipulation based on metasurfaces has been demonstrated, providing a footing ground for arbitrary light control in full space-time dimensions. Here, we review the latest research progress in multifunctional and tunable metasurfaces. Firstly, we introduce the evolution of metasurfaces and then present the concepts, the basic principles, and the design methods of multifunctional metasurface. Then with more details, we discuss how to realize metasurfaces with both multifunctionality and tunability. Finally, we also foresee various future research directions and applications of metasurfaces including innovative design methods, new material platforms, and tunable metasurfaces based metadevices.

This paper gives a general and logical analysis of theexpert positionin design research by which methods for innovative design can be derived from expert design practices. It first gives a framework for characterising accounts of design by the way in which they define and relategeneral, descriptiveandprescribedtypes of design practices. Second, it analyses with this framework the expert position’s conservatism of prescribing existing expert design practices to non-expert designers. Third, it argues that the expert status of expert designers does not provide sufficient justification for prescribing expert design practices to non-expert designers; it is shown that this justification needs support by empirical testing. Fourth, it discusses validation of design methods for presenting an approach to this testing. One consequence of the need to empirically test the expert position is that its prescription has to be formulated in more detail. Another consequence is that it undermines the expert position since expert design practices are not anymore certain sources for deriving design methods with. Yet it also opens the expert position to other sources for developing design methods for innovation, such as the practices of contemporary designers and the insights of design researchers.

National traditional crafts are a treasure-house of rich heritage, and traditional culture with Chinese style and folkloric becomes attractive in recent years, then the innovational combination of traditional elements and modern fashion is the only way towards further industry development. Meanwhile, as one kind of special traditional embroideries, the art and process characteristics of Najin meet the requirements of jacquard weaving. On the basis of jacquard-weaving embroidery, this paper designs Najin style fabrics, in which the ground yarn is grounded on openwork weaves, and embroidery based on weft whole float long as well as the principle of space mixed color. Applying elements of paper-cutting arts in pattern design with Najin’s horizontal, vertical and inclined changing, a richly innovative design is developed. While proving the feasibility of jacquard-weaving embroidery, this paper also provides promising future for the fading Najin culture.

In recent years, with the idea of carrying forward traditional culture gradually gaining popularity, people pay more attention to the traditional creation wisdom contained in traditional artifacts, and on this basis, actively explore more innovative design methods, so as to realize the organic combination of traditional creation wisdom and intelligent era, so that traditional creation wisdom can be better inherited and carried forward. Based on this, this paper discusses the traditional creation wisdom, combines the development and improvement of modern times, takes the design of artistic furniture as a case, the paper analyzes how to combine and innovate the traditional creation wisdom in the product design under the current intelligent era by the combination of traditional creation wisdom and the emerging “Unity 3D” technology, in order to better inherit and carry forward the traditional creation wisdom.

In today's era of the pursuit of personalization, the range of product is greatly enriched. Thus, enhancing the level of product innovation and design capabilities is the inevitable requirements of the new era. Based on the bifurcation theory, people’s thinking state in the innovative design process of a product was analyzed. Some innovative design methods that commonly used in modern design theory were introduced.Based on a product design example, two innovative design methods were respectively carried out to realize the design of new products.
