Based on the previous experiments and theoretical analyses, finite element analyses (FEA) and parametric study on seismic behavior of Cover Plate Strengthen-Beam Flange Weaken Beam-to-Column (CPSBFW) connection are executed by using ABAQUS. Suggestions on design conceptions and details of the cover plate strengthen-beam flange weaken beam-to-column connection are presented in this paper, and that provide valuable reference for design of beam-to-column connections in steel structures.

Today, architectural application and economic constraints require that vertical-irregular structures be constructed in urban areas. Proposing methods to minimize damage to these structures during earthquakes is therefore crucial. Strict regulations have been enforced for the design and analysis of irregular structures given their higher vulnerability to damage compared to that of regular structures. The present study aimed to evaluate eight regular and irregular 10-story and 15-story steel structures with buckling-restrained braces frames (BRBFs) and concentric braced frames (CBFs) in terms of their responses to twelve far-field earthquakes. According to the obtained results, the mean value of maximum drift, top floor displacement and floor acceleration were higher in both regular and irregular structures with BRBFs than in those with CBFs.

Abstract Present contribution intends to emphasize the contribution of geometric non-linearity to the stiffness state of semi-rigid multi–storey steel structures. Though semi-rigidity of beam – column connections involves a nonlinearity at constitutive bending momentrelative rotation level, the geometric nonlinearity associated to deformed conFigure uration at element level is less referred to. The main objective of the study is to express the stiffness state of geometric non-linear elements semi-rigidly connected at its ends. Stiffness state is, in its term, expressed by element level stiffness matrix considering the six degrees of freedom of the planar element. Regarding the reference system, both local and global systems are employed allowing a simple and direct transition from element level vectorial relations to their structural level forms. The three fundamental vectorial relations (static equilibrium, kinematic compatibility, material constitutivity) emphasize that the principle of virtual work holds in the case of semi-rigidly connected skeletal structures as well.

A common assumption when analyzing a structure for earthquake forces is that the building is positively attached to a rigid ground so that it can sustain possible tensile forces without being detached, or uplifted, from its bearing points. Considering the facts that almost no tension can be transferred between a surface foundation and soil and soft soils interact with the supported structure during earthquakes, in this research, the effects of uplift and soil–structure interaction on nonlinear seismic response of structures are evaluated. Several reinforced concrete and steel structures under different suits of consistent ground motions are considered. The base of the buildings is modeled with vertical no-tension springs being nonlinear in compression. The total soil–structure interaction system is modeled within OpenSees, and the seismic behavior is evaluated using a nonlinear dynamic analysis. The nonlinear responses of buildings are determined and compared between three cases: fixed base, flexible base without uplift, and flexible base with uplift. The cases for which uplift in conjunction with soil–structure interaction should be considered are identified.

Older steel structures frequently require seismic rehabilitation, but the inelastic seismic behavior of these older structures is not well understood. A joint research study between the U. of Washington, U. of Minnesota, and Preece/Goudie and Associates examined this behavior. The study included experimental and analytical studies, and this paper is an overview of the research and the more important research results. It provides a concise summary of the rather extensive research program, and the research results are correlated to real structural behavior. This correlation includes evaluation and comparison with behavior observed during past earthquakes. The paper will help the reader understand the performance of the total structural system will provide valuable insight for engineers starting a repair or retrofit project, and it will isolate potential problem areas to be considered in rehabilitation projects.
