In this review, literature relevant to the problems of deposits and corrosion in industrial/commercial furnaces and boilers is analyzed, and the facts are synthesized into a picture that addresses corrosion problems expected with the use of unconventional fuels. Corrosion is found to depend greatly on the phenomena occurring during the combustion of fuel-oil sprays introduced into the furnace. In a first step, the drops that form the spray heat up and evaporate in a way that closely resembles a batch distillation process. Eventually, ignition and combustion occur with the subsequent change of the liquid fuel drops into carbonaceous, porous, sphere-like particles called cenospheres. In a second step, these cenospheres burn and the products of this combustion step determine the majority of the deposits on metal surfaces. This observation is very important since nonvolatile, non-combustible, corrosive trace compounds existing in the initial fuel-oil drop will have a much higher concentration in the cenosphere than in the original fuel. Accordingly, it is recommended that the theoretical and experimental study of oil spray combustion, cenosphere formation, and cenosphere combustion in a cloud of cenospheres receive a very high priority. Corrosion by gases is found to be unimportant. Deposits are found to be much more corrosive when in liquid form, although corrosion by solid deposits is by no means negligible. As a result, it is suggested in the study that corrosion on highly polished metal surfaces should be studied in order to evaluate the potential of this method of inhibiting deposition and thus hindering corrosion. Recent advances in the theory of deposition from combustion gases are also outlined in this study. The literature survey shows that the main corrosion-causing fuel constituents present in unconventional fuels are sulfur, alkali, vanadium, carbon and carbon monoxide, iron, and chloride. It is found that sometimes one of these compounds might act as a catalyst in corrosive reactions initiated by another compound, and therefore great care must be taken to identify the corrosion-causing compound in the deposits on metal surfaces. It is also found that in some cases a corrosive compound will inhibit the corrosive action of another corrosive compound. It is recommended that such situations be studied further so as to investigate the possibility of an optimum concentration of two such corrosive compounds that would minimize metal wastage. The problem of performing meaningful corrosion experiments is also addressed in this report and specific recommendations are made to achieve this goal. Finally, the effects of additives and the furnace operating conditions are discussed, and potential problems with both additives and new operating conditions are mentioned. The recommendations at the end of this study present a comprehensive set of areas to be investigated in order to better understand and be able to mitigate corrosion problems associated with unconventional fuels. High-priority experimental and theoretical studies are also outlined.

<p>Hydraulic engineering structures like locks affect the natural hydraulic conditions and have a relevant impact on surface water – groundwater interactions due to enlarging the hydraulic gradient. For this, these sites are excellent areas to study associated flow paths, mass transport and their spatial and temporal variability in higher detail. However, no large-scale study at an inland waterway is available in Germany until now.</p><p>Our work aims to close this gap by applying a multiparameter approach for analyzing surface water-groundwater-interactions by using pH, electrical conductivity, major ions in combination with various other tracers like stable water isotopes, 222-Rn, and tritium. In this context, we also investigate the usability of organic trace compounds and their associated transformation products as potential new tracers.</p><p>The main study approach is based on the hypothesis that i) gaining stream sections show relatively high 222-Rn concentrations originating from discharging groundwater and ii) losing stream sections which are characterized by low 222-Rn concentrations as well as lower tritium and organic trace compounds inventories compared to unaffected areas.</p><p>During different flow-scenarios of the river Moselle, we test these hypotheses by means of a high-resolution longitudinal sampling at 2 km intervals of the main stream (along 242 km) and its major tributaries in combination with groundwater sampling at numerous wells.</p><p>Here, we present the first results of the longitudinal sampling campaign of the river Moselle in October 2020, which took place during intermediate flow conditions (Q=200 m³/s). We used on-site and in-situ 222-Rn measurements and electrical conductivity as a tracer to immediately identify zones along the Moselle with increased groundwater inflow.</p><p>With the use of these tracers, we will deepen the conceptual process understanding of surface water – groundwater interactions occurring at larger streams and during different flow conditions, which may lead to a general river characterization of losing and gaining stream reaches. Moreover, understanding the sources of water compounds and the processes involved during transportation and transformation is crucial for maintaining a good quality of the water body, which is key for proper water management. The findings obtained in the region of the Moselle river might be further transferred to other waterways and support decision making.</p>

Siloxanes are among the most technologically troublesome trace compounds present in biogas. As a result of their combustion, hard-to-remove sediments are formed, blocking biogas energy processing devices and reducing the efficiency of biogas plants. The purpose of this study was to help investors and designers to choose the optimal technology for the adsorptive removal of volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) from biogas and to identify adsorbents worth further development. This paper critically reviews and discusses the state-of-the-art technologies for the adsorption removal of siloxanes from biogas, indicating potentially beneficial directions in their development and deficiencies in the state of knowledge. The origin of VMSs in biogas, their selected physicochemical properties, technological problems that they can cause and their typical versus limit concentrations in biogases are presented. Both the already implemented methods of adsorptive VMSs removal from landfill and sewage gases and the ones being under development are verified and systematized. The parameters and effectiveness of adsorption processes are discussed, and individual adsorbents are compared. Possible ways of regenerating spent adsorbents are evaluated and prospects for their application are assessed. Finally, zeolite-based adsorbents—which can also be used for biogas desulfurization—and adsorbents based on polymer resins, as being particularly active against VMSs and most amenable to multiple regeneration, are identified.
