BackgroundThis study was designed to identify all elderly people of ethnic minorities living in a defined geographical area in inner-city Liverpool and to identify psychiatric morbidity and barriers to use of services. This paper reports the prevalence of dementia and depression.MethodA survey of the community was carried out using the Geriatric Mental State Examination, AGECAT and ethnically matched interviewers. The sampling frame consisted of Family Health Services Authority lists as a basis, with additional information from community lists, ‘snow-balling’ and a door-to-door survey.Results418 people were interviewed, with a high percentage (55%) of young elderly (65–74) men. The prevalence of dementia ranged from 2 to 9% and of depression from 5 to 19%, and there were no significant differences in levels between English-speaking ethnic groups and the indigenous population. Higher levels of dementia were found among non-English-speaking groups.ConclusionsA complete enumeration of the elderly in ethnic minority groups is best achieved by using several different methods. Diagnosis of dementia may be misleading among those who do not speak the dominant language.

From the 1991 census (Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, 1993) it is estimated that 5.9% of the total population of England and Wales belong to an ethnic minority, and that 3% of this ethnic minority population are aged 65 years and older. This compares with 17% aged 65 years and older in the indigenous population. Although the numbers of elderly people from ethnic minorities are small in absolute terms, these groups are growing rapidly, and mental health professionals working with elderly patients will increasingly need to be equipped with the necessary services and skills to meet their specific needs. The elderly ethnic minority population of the UK is extremely diverse; the largest groups originate from the Indian subcontinent and the Caribbean, but there are also significant communities of Chinese, Somali, Vietnamese, Eastern European, Mediterranean and Irish origin, all of which require consideration when planning and providing services, whatever their numbers. This diversity is also important when considering the various factors that influence the presentation and diagnosis of mental disorders in these groups.

The aim was to verify the association between food insecurity (FI) and food consumption of elderly people assisted by a Family Health Strategy (FHE). Sixteen elderly people, of both sexes, with a mean age of 69.13 years and BMI of 29.23 kg/m2 were evaluated. The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale, food frequency questionnaire and 24-hour food recall were used. Weight and height were taken from the patients' records. It was observed that 37.5% of the elderly were in mild AI, 31.25% in moderate AI, 18.75% in severe AI and only 12.5% in food security. Individuals do not consume skimmed milk and have frequent intake of eggs, sausages, margarine, refined cereals, industrialized beverages, sweets and candies. And little or no use of olive oil and whole grains. No significant association between AI and food consumption. OBJECTIVE: to verify the forms of communication used in four Primary Health Units with Family Health Program teams in Porto Feliz, São Paulo, and how they impact in the care and control of the health of elderly people. METHOD: this qualitative study sought to capture the communication between elderly people and healthcare professionals. Interviews were conducted with 20 elderly people of both sexes. RESULTS: from the discourses and observations, assertive communication and blocked communication emerged as the central analysis themes, the verbal and nonverbal elements of which, unveiled subjectivity of the communication process, of the local culture and of the psychosocial factors positively and negatively contributing to the healthcare for elderly people. The nursing teams of the Family Health Strategy showed forms of communication that favored the adherence of the elderly people to the care and control of their health. Negatives aspects did not have completely prejudicial consequences, however, should be avoided, in order to facilitate integral care to elderly people. CONCLUSION: it is worth reinforcing the need for improvement of the nursing team and other healthcare professionals regarding health communication as an innovative technology, bringing credibility to the health promotion and prevention programs with elderly users.

Nostalgia and sentimentality are very typical for the old age. There are some characteristics that are perceived as typical for the elderly people in the different cultures, such as being dependent, and needing long-term care. There are also some similarities between the population tendencies in Bulgaria and Romania. The simultaneously acceptance in European Union of both countries also suggests the existence of some similar attitudes towards the past among elderly minority people in both countries. The hypothesis of the study was that together with some similarities, the elderly people from both ethnic minorities in the two countries would differ cross-culturally in their sentimentality and nostalgia related to the past. Sentimentality and nostalgia in elderly minority people (26 Roma people in Bulgaria and 21 Hungarians in Romania) were measured by means of a questionnaire created by Gergov & Stoyanova (2013). The results indicated that the Hungarian minority in Romania was more sentimental and nostalgic than the Roma minority in Bulgaria. More thoughts about the past reported the minority young elders than the minority oldest old. The females from the minority groups were more sentimental than the males from the minority groups. Higher sentimentality and nostalgia among elderly Hungarians could be explained by their higher conservatism and more satisfaction with the hystorical past than Roma people. Roma people living in institutions felt a sense of stability in their present and they shared some positive expectations for the future.

BackgroundThe literature regarding psychiatric illness among elderly people with learning disabilities is limited and conflicting because of methodological differences. There have been no recent studies comparing psychiatric epidemiology between younger and older adults with learning disabilities, using the same methodology and definitions.MethodComprehensive psychiatric examination using a semi-structured rating scale was undertaken on everyone with learning disabilities, aged 65 years or over (n= 134), living in a defined geographical area. Comparison was made with a randomly selected control group of adults with learning disabilities aged 20–65 years (n=73) drawn from the same geographical area.ResultsElderly people with learning disabilities have a greater prevalence of psychiatric morbidity than younger controls (68.7v. 47.9%). Rates for depression and anxiety disorders are high, and dementia is common: there are equal rates for schizophrenia/delusional disorders, autism and behaviour disorders in the two groups.ConclusionsThe higher psychiatric morbidity among elderly (compared with younger) people with learning disabilities has not previously received adequate recognition. This warrants further investigation by service planners and clinicians.

Abstract Objective: to identify the medication profile, the prevalence of polypharmacy and associated factors among elderly people receiving care from Family Health Strategy teams. Method: an analytical, document-based, cross-sectional survey with a quantitative approach was conducted in Brazlândia in the Distrito Federal, Brazil, with a sample of 211 elderly people enrolled in and receiving care from one of the local Family Health Strategy teams. Data were submitted to bivariate analysis and multiple analysis through logistic regression. Results: a considerable number of the elderly (62, 29.4%) were undergoing polypharmacy. The majority (56, 26.5%) used three different classes of drug, with antihypertensive drugs the most used. Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular complications and the use of antihypertensive drugs were factors associated with polypharmacy. Conclusion: polypharmacy is a worrying reality and demands a new approach on the part of professionals, as this important aspect of geriatrics should be carefully evaluated to avoid harm and iatrogeny among the elderly.
