Coaching and mentoring: an overview for trainers in psychiatry

SUMMARY Although mentoring has been widely accepted as a support mechanism for newly appointed consultants, there are many other applications of coaching and mentoring that are less widely appreciated, such as in the development of leadership skills or in having coaching conversations with trainees to facilitate learning. This article summarises some of the basic principles and practices of coaching and mentoring, with a focus on useful knowledge for psychiatric trainers. It describes some of the qualities and skills needed in a coach or mentor; the use of questioning techniques and models; and how the coach or mentor needs an awareness of the importance of the contract in the coaching and mentoring relationship, of the role of coaching or mentoring supervision, and of the ability to evaluate coaching or mentoring. It also discusses some of the organisational context, challenges and opportunities of embedding coaching and mentoring more deeply into the work culture. It is argued that coaching and mentoring as supportive interventions have not been prioritised in the National Health Service in the same way that they have been in the private business sector, where performance and financial success are measurably increased by these techniques.

There is a considerable amount of literature on leadership, particularly as it relates to organizations, government, and the military. However, educators and psychologists know considerably less about early precursors of leadership, how leadership develops in youth, possible gender differences, and the relationship of leadership, intelligence and creativity. A global consensus exists that leaders are needed and that we shouldn't delay the early development of leadership skills. The authors propose a model to enhance creative leadership and introduce a teacher-completed rating scale, the Gifted Rating Scales to help accomplish this. As demonstrated, there are possibilities to detect early creative and intellectual giftedness among children and youngsters in the classrooms and expectations to move from a basic level of competence to reach an elite or expert level in any field, facilitating the emergence of leadership.

The return time of medical record documents is one of the performance indicators medical record document submission officer, according to the Medical Record Manual Book, standard of the time to return of medical record document in inpatient is 2 x 24 hours after the patients out of the hospital. Result of preliminary studies found there were medical record documents late, average of medical record documents late were 45,28 % at Inpatient Instalation I. This research designed to analyze the relation of work environment with performance of medical record document submission officer. The type of this research was analytical with cross sectional approach. The result of this research was work culture of officer was very good (64%). Leadership effect to officer was effective enough (56%). Relationship between employee and boss was very good (68%), and Compensation of officer was very good (88%). The result of analysis showed that there was a correlation between work culture with officer performance (p=0,019), there was correlation between leadership with officer performance (p=0,018), there was no correlation between aspect of relationship of employee and boss with officer performance (p=0,688), and there was no correlation between compensation with officer performance (p=0,263). The conclusion of this research is the work culture and leadership is work environment that correlation with officer performance in Instalation of inpatient I RSUD Dr. Saiful Anwar Malang Keywords: Work environment, performance, medical record document

Research consistently shows that persons with learning disabilities are more likely to be victims of crime. For such victims, engaging with the criminal justice system may be fraught with difficulties given the expectation that victims should normally articulate verbally and with fluency both their testimony and their views on issues pertaining to the justice process itself. Grounded in the principle of orality and often likened to a system of gladiatorial combat, adversarial justice systems have a poor track record of hearing the voices of victims of crime who have learning disabilities. However, recent years have witnessed an attitudinal shift towards meeting the needs of victims who require communication support; with legal and policy reforms introduced across multiple jurisdictions designed to enable more effective participation in the justice process. Augmentative and alternative communication could constitute an important support mechanism to enable and empower victims of crime who would struggle to express themselves verbally in the courtroom; yet these alternative forms of voice are alien to the oral tradition and sit uneasily within the priority traditionally afforded to adversarial questioning techniques.

In this paper, we review systematically the role of problem-based learning (PBL) in developing soft skills in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and other fields of studies. The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) includes the most recent empirical, review, and conceptual studies from TVET and other multiple fields of studies including medicine, humanities, and engineering between the years of 2001 and 2016 collected from four databases. A qualitative method was used to accomplish the systematic review. After the collection of articles, the selected studies were analyzed through thematic analysis. From this review, we concluded that PBL as an instructional approach has a significant role in the development of soft skills among students of various disciplines including TVET; empirical evidence is predominantly conclusive in identifying the acquisitions of various soft skills including communication skills, conflict resolution skills, leadership skills, and interpersonal skills, and finally, several factors might influence the relationship of PBL and soft skills such as duration and process of PBL instruction, role of facilitator, and awareness and training of learners. Moreover, there are fewer number of empirical studies on the role and effects of PBL approach to developing soft skills in TVET.

This article examines how Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqshabandiyah (TQN) utilizes online media to strengthen its existence. As an integral part of the Islamic revival in Indonesia, Sufi orders (tarekat) are facing remarkable challenges and opportunities in maintaining their existence in the digital era. Nevertheless, previous studies observed Sufi orders as a traditional community that would be exterminated by the pace of modernization and globalization. This article argues that Sufi orders may survive in the internet of things era, contrary to preceding discourses. Based on ethnography research, both online and offline, the authors found out that the vitality of the Sufi order can adapt, develop, and innovate using online media. TQN's use of online media through various platforms proves Sufi order’s adaptive efforts to the internet-based era. TQN’s online media provide informations on Islamic  and Sufism teachings, news, schedule of activities, and fundraising. Even though TQN members’ being active in cyber-Islamic environments, they resist online asceticism thus leverage the vertical-personal obedience, conservative authorities, and sacred rituals. These practices done by TQN members illuminate its identity as an authentic online sufism. Premises shown in this paper may enrich the scope of study within the relationship of Sufi orders and Islamic-cyber environment, especially in Indonesian context.

Introduction: Leadership Style was a set of behavioral patterns and strategies that were often used by leaders to influence subordinates to achieve organizational goals. The leadership style was closely related to burnout syndrome and nurse performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of leadership style with burnout syndrome and the performance of nurses in the inpatient room of Bajawa District Hospital.Method: The design of this study was cross-sectional. The population in this study was 113 and a sample of 104 respondents was obtained with total sampling. The independent variable was the leadership style. The dependent variable is burnout syndrome and nurse performance. The instrument uses a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with Spearman's Rho.Results:  There was a relationship between leadership style with emotional exhaustion (p = 0,000), leadership style with depersonalization (p = 0,000), leadership style with decreased self-achievement (p = 0,000) leadership style with nurse performance (p = 0.002).Conclusion: The application of a positive leadership style will reduce the incidence of burnout syndrome and improve nurse performance. So that nurse leaders need to be equipped with effective leadership skills.

Public health, affecting the operations of the entity and its environment, plays an important role in the concept of sustainable development. Health condition affects the quality of life of the individual thus the condition of the economy. Taking into consideration the complex relationship of public health and the concept of Sustainable Development Goals, the analysis seems to be fully justified. The aim of the analysis is to determine challenges and opportunities of the sustainability of selected United Nations Member States healthcare sectors. Particular emphasis in the analysis was placed on the situation of the Polish sector against the background of the analyzed countries. The analysis was based on the Sustainable Development Goals and was carried out using one of the MCDA method.
