We examined the effects of an intervention program based on Adlerian psychology on the burned-out teachers. By administering the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Achievement Motivation Test (AMT), we identified 60 teachers with burnout symptoms. The experimental group attended eight sessions of the intervention program with different cognitive restructuring techniques and motivational themes to facilitate psychological empowerment. The findings demonstrated the positive effects of the program on alleviating burnout with cognitive and behavioral changes in the participants’ personal and professional lives. The durability of these improvements was moderate at a 6-month follow-up after the intervention.

The positive effects of achievement-motivation ( n ach) training on entrepreneurial behavior have been reported for some time. n ach training has been limited to persons who could afford the time and monetary costs of the longer training sessions. A substantially shortened training design, when combined with skill training, has shown many of the effects and benefits of the original n ach training among 13 Australian inventors. In a 2-yr. follow-up study, n ach trained subjects engaged in significantly more business activities than they did before the training.

In a recent manuscript published in International Journal of Sport Psychology, entitled “Effects of a brief one-day autonomy-supportive intervention on improving basic psychological needs, motivation, and behaviours of physical activity among middle-school students: A multidimensional approach”, we reported that a one-day eight-hour Autonomy-Supportive Intervention Program for Physical Education (ASIP-PE) was effective (Tilga et al., in press) in changing students’ perceptions of their physical education (PE) teachers’ cognitive and procedural autonomy support at a one-month follow-up, compared to control group students. After the intervention, a significant increase was also found in the experimental group students’ need satisfaction for autonomy and competence. Also, a significant decrease was found in experimental group students’ perceptions of their PE teachers’ intimidation and negative conditional regard, and in students’ need frustration for autonomy. This letter is to briefly convey additional data regarding the long-term benefits of ASIP-PE now that we have been able to conduct one-year follow-up analyses.

It was hypothesized that efficient generalization and durability in Instrumental Enrichment (IE) program can be achieved by using metacognition principles in bridging. 140 talented children 10–12 yr. olds were drawn from schools which are defined as culturally disadvantaged. The subjects were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. During two years the experimental group received 240 hours of intervention. Half of the time was devoted to IE and the other half to various topics which were not learned in school. Throughout the entire intervention program, emphasis was placed upon the bridging between contents by means of metacognition, systematic thinking and integrative lesson plans. Immediately after the program was completed the results showed generalization effects on verbal and nonverbal thinking tasks and very limited generalization on school achievement. A follow-up study, four years later, showed effects of durability on verbal, non-verbal thinking tasks and broad generalization in school achievement. The research points to the necessity to integrate between IE and school curriculum, through the conceptual framework of systematic thinking and metacognition.

Implementing effective prevention programmes is critical to prevent tobacco use. Objectives. This study aims to assess the long-term effectiveness of the "SmokeOut-I" programme in the smoking prevention of school-aged adolescents, by gender. Methodology. A quasi-experimental study was conducted including a pre-test and a post-test, as well as a experimental group (N = 163) and a control group (N = 148) of adolescents attending the 6th grade at Braga schools in 2014/2015. A follow-up was conducted three years later. A self-report questionnaire was administered to both groups before and after the programme implementation, and at the follow-up. The programme was only administered to the experimental group. Results. The programme has shown long-term effectiveness in preventing smoking experimentation, and in enhancing smoking refusal skills. There was a lower prevalence of tobacco use and intention to smoke in the experimental group than in the control group, although not statistically significant. It was found that the experimental group maintained adequate knowledge about smoking over time. Conclusions. The positive effects on health and on the environment justify the broad implementation of this programme, which implies the involvement and commitment of governmental institutions.

This study presents the results of an efficacy evaluation of a web-based brief motivational alcohol prevention/intervention program called Michigan Prevention and Alcohol Safety for Students (M-PASS). Four on-line sessions providing individually-tailored feedback were delivered to first-year college students over 9 weeks. Non- and low-risk drinking participants received risk prevention, while high-risk drinking participants received a risk-reduction intervention. Both intervention and control groups were surveyed at baseline and at a 3-month follow-up. Analysis showed positive effects for both men and women on stage of change, drinking behavior, drinking motivation and attitudes, and use of risk-reduction strategies. These results provided evidence of efficacy and found that M-PASS had both intervention and prevention effects, making it unique among currently developed brief alcohol interventions for college students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of forgiveness therapy for wives of alcoholics in South Korea suffering from emotional abuse by their spouses. Methods: Non-randomized quasi-experimental research was conducted with 2-hour weekly forgiveness therapy sessions for 12 weeks, and pre-test, post-test, and a 12-week follow-up test. A total number of 28 subjects were divided into two groups: 15 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, χ2 test, and repeated measure ANOVA, using SPSS 20.0.Results: The experimental group showed a significantly higher score on the forgiveness scale than did the control group (t = 0.312, p < .010) and the 12-week follow-up test (F = 4.43, p = .039). In the subcategories of the forgiveness scale, affect and cognition scores were significantly increased but there was no significant change on the behavior score. Conclusions: These findings suggest that forgiveness therapy may be an effective intervention program to improve forgiveness for the emotionally abused wives of alcoholics.

AbstractEarly intervention for children with reading impairments is crucial in order to achieve reading improvements and avoid school failure. One line of reading intervention research focuses on the experimental manipulation of reading rate through a text-fading training approach. Considering relevant reading-related predictors (i.e., orthographic knowledge and rapid automatized naming; RAN), we aim at evaluating the text-fading training’s efficiency for a sample of German reading-impaired third graders (n = 120). The purpose of the present study was to examine (1) the predictive value of orthographic knowledge and RAN and their contribution of explained variance in comprehension performance during training, (2) text-fading training effects on reading rate and comprehension in a pre-post comparison, and (3) (lasting) text-fading training effects at word and sentence level in a pre-post-follow-up design. Results of structural models indicated RAN to be significantly related to comprehension performance for the experimental group, whereas no sufficient regression weight was found for orthographic knowledge. A reverse pattern was found for the self-paced group. No significant improvements regarding reading rate and comprehension were revealed for the experimental group after training. However, significant positive effects on word and sentence level at post-test time point indicate stronger reading improvements for the experimental compared to the control group. The retention of training gains was indicated at sentence-level reading 6 months after the training. Possible explanations for the presented positive training effects as well as the mixed results for reading rate, comprehension, and follow-up preservation are discussed.

The article deals with the development of achievement motivation of young people with hearing impairment during adolescence through a special intervention program. The aim was to influence the sport specific movement program the achievement motivation of the youth with hearing disabilities. The methodology of the work he was elected a basic empirical approach using a simple experiment. The main factor was the experimental intervention movement program that consisted of the foundations of basic self-defense and psychomotor. The main research method was the aspiration test (Bakalář, 1987). Hypotheses that the effects of the intervention program will increase the level of achievement motivation in the experimental group of young people with hearing disabilities was confirmed. Research confirmed the assumption that the fundamentals of self defense and psychomotor have a significant influence on the development of achievement motivation of the selected group of young people with hearing impairments. This article is part of the sub successfully defended his dissertation on FSpS MU in Brno.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of oral hygiene promoting program (OHPP) using a smartphone endomicroscope among students in elementary schools in Bangkok, Thailand, to enable their oral hygiene maintenance and to compare oral health outcomes in the intervention program between the experimental and control groups.Design/methodology/approachThis is a quasi-experimental research study consisting of two groups, a pretest, a posttest and a follow-up design. The student sample consisted of 59 fifth graders who matched the study criteria on medium and low levels of teeth brushing skills. There were 29 experimental group participants who completed the six-week OHPP using a smartphone endomicroscope. Another 30 participants formed the control group involved in the ordinary oral health education program. The comparison data for oral health behaviors (knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP)) and oral hygiene were statistically analyzed by using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).FindingsResults indicated that the experimental group exhibited higher oral health behaviors regarding KAPs and oral hygiene related to teeth cleanliness and gum health than the control group in the postexperimental and follow-up phases. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups with regard to tongue cleanliness.Originality/valueThe students maintain their own oral hygiene due to a provision of activities related to KAP concerns. The instrument helped the students to find tooth decay and dental plaque associated with teeth cleanliness after brushing their teeth.

Background: The Prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing in perimenopausal women. BMI, waist-hip ratio (WHR) and lipids are important factors for controlling metabolic syndrome. The Baduanjin exercise is a traditional Chinese exercise that promotes the integration of physical and mental health, and it is easy to practice at home and fit for busy perimenopausal women. However, the health effects needed to be evaluated.Aim: The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to evaluate the effects, after twelve weeks of practicing Baduanjin exercise. Methods: This study was conducted at two Buddhism painting clubs, using a parallel-design, control trial recruiting perimenopausal women. There were three instruments: (1) BMI, (2) Waist-Hip Ratio, (3) Lipids—HDL and LDL. The intervention effects from the study baseline to a twelve weeks follow-up were estimated using T-test to evaluate the effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise. The Baduanjin exercise intervention included one-on-one teaching and telephone follow-up to help women practice Baduanjin exercise of 10-15 minutes twice per day for twelve weeks at home. Result: A total of 54 women aged 40 to 60 were recruited from two Buddhism painting clubs. Twenty-seven women were in the experimental group, while 27 women were in the control group. Positive effects were found after 12 weeks doing Baduanjin exercise of 10-15 minutes twice per day at home. In the experimental group, women improved their health by significantly decreasing BMI, increasing HDL, decreasing LDL and more slowly increasing WHR compared with the control group. Conclusion: Baduanjin exercise is a good home exercise to suggest perimenopausal women to improve their BMI, waist-hip ratio and lipid
