Abstract In this study, the relationship between nonlinear model properties and inverse problem solutions is analyzed using a numerical technique based on the inverse problem theory formulated by Mosegaard and Tarantola. According to this theory, the inverse problem and solution are defined via convolution and conjunction of probability density functions (PDFs) that represent stochastic information obtained from the model, observations, and prior knowledge in a joint multidimensional space. This theory provides an explicit analysis of the nonlinear model function, together with information about uncertainties in the model, observations, and prior knowledge through construction of the joint probability density, from which marginal solution functions can then be evaluated. The numerical analysis technique derived from the theory computes the component PDFs in discretized form via a combination of function mapping on a discrete grid in the model and observation phase space and Monte Carlo sampling from known parametric distributions. The efficacy of the numerical analysis technique is demonstrated through its application to two well-known simplified models of atmospheric physics: damped oscillations and Lorenz’s three-component model of dry cellular convection. The major findings of this study include the following: (i) Use of a nonmonotonic forward model in the inverse problem gives rise to the potential for a multimodal posterior PDF, the realization of which depends on the information content of the observations and on observation and model uncertainties. (ii) The cumulative effect of observations over time, space, or both could render the final posterior PDF unimodal, even with the nonmonotonic forward model. (iii) A greater number of independent observations are needed to constrain the solution in the case of a nonmonotonic nonlinear model than for a monotonic nonlinear or linear forward model for a given number of degrees of freedom in control parameter space. (iv) A nonlinear monotonic forward model gives rise to a skewed unimodal posterior PDF, implying a well-posed maximum likelihood inverse problem. (v) The presence of model error greatly increases the possibility of capturing multiple modes in the posterior PDF with the nonmonotonic nonlinear model. (vi) In the case of a nonlinear forward model, use of a Gaussian approximation for the prior update has a similar effect to an increase in model error, which indicates there is the potential to produce a biased mean central estimate even when observations and model are unbiased.

This study aims to describe the profile of vegetation diversity in the mangrove ecosystem in Tamuku Village, Bone-Bone-Bone District, North Luwu Regency. This research is a qualitative research using survey methods. The data collection technique uses the Quadrant Line Transect Survey technique. The data analysis technique uses the thinking flow which is divided into three stages, namely describing phenomena, classifying them, and seeing how the concepts that emerge are related to each other. The results of this study are the profile of mangrove vegetation in Tamuku Village, which is still found 16 varieties of true mangrove vegetation and 7 varieties of mangrove vegetation joined in the coastal area of Tamuku Village, Bone-Bone District, North Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi. The condition of mangrove vegetation in Tamuku Village is currently very worrying due to human activities that cause damage such as the project of normalization of flow, opening of new farms, disposal of garbage, water pollution due to chemicals, and exploitation of mangrove forests for living needs. The impact is ecosystem damage and reduced vegetation area as a place to grow and develop mangroves.

The research was carried out to find the influence of training material and methods of training toward workability. The study was conducted respectively from an employee of PD BPR Bantul Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research is expected to be useful for stakeholders in seeing CSR disclosure in the company in testing and analyzing its effect on the company's financial performance and with the presence of anti-corruption exposure, whether it will strengthen the impact of CSR disclosure on the company's financial performance. The study population in this study were all mining companies registered on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2016-2018 with a total of 63 companies. The research sample was taken using a random sampling technique that was calculated by the Slovin formula so that 54 samples were obtained for analysis. Linear Regression Analysis and Moderation Regression Analysis were chosen as the analysis technique used in this study. The results show that CSR disclosure does not affect the company's financial performance, and anti-corruption disclosure does not affect the relationship between the two.

Are there any common patterns in the transition processes from traditional and more or less sustainable forest management to exploitative use, which can regularly be observed both in central Europe and in the countries of the South (e.g. India or Indonesia)? Attempts were made with a time-space-model to typify those force fields, in which traditional sustainable forest management is undermined and is then transformed into a modern type of sustainable forest management. Although it is unlikely that the history of the North will become the future of the South, the glimpse into the northern past offers a useful starting point for the understanding of the current situation in the South, which in turn could stimulate the debate on development. For instance, the patterns which stand behind the conflicts on forest use in the Himalayas are very similar to the conflicts in the Alps. In the same way, the impact of socio-economic changes on the environment – key word ‹globalisation› – is often much the same. To recognize comparable patterns can be very valuable because it can act as a stimulant for the search of political, legal and technical solutions adapted to a specific situation. For the global community the realization of the way political-economic alliances work at the head of the ‹globalisationwave›can only signify to carry on trying to find a common language and understanding at the negotiation tables. On the lee side of the destructive breaker it is necessary to conserve and care for what survived. As it was the case in Switzerland these forest islands could once become the germination points for the genesis of a cultural landscape, where close-to-nature managed forests will constitute an essential element.

Abstract The advance speed of a longwall face is an essential factor affecting the mining pressure and overburden movement, and an effective approach for choosing a reasonable advance speed to realise coal mine safety and efficient production is needed. To clarify the influence of advance speed on the overburden movement law of a fully mechanised longwall face, a time-space subsidence model of overburden movement is established by the continuous medium analysis method. The movement law of overburden in terms of the advance speed is obtained, and mining stress characteristics at different advance speeds are reasonably explained. The theoretical results of this model are further verified by a physical simulation experiment. The results support the following conclusions. (i) With increasing advance speed of the longwall face, the first (periodic) rupture interval of the main roof and the key stratum increase, while the subsidence of the roof, the fracture angle and the rotation angle of the roof decrease. (ii) With increasing advance speed, the roof displacement range decreases gradually, and the influence range of the advance speed on the roof subsidence is 75 m behind the longwall face. (iii) An increase in the advance speed of the longwall face from 4.89 to 15.23 m/d (daily advancing of the longwall face) results in a 3.28% increase in the impact load caused by the sliding instability of the fractured rock of the main roof and a 5.79% decrease in the additional load caused by the rotation of the main roof, ultimately resulting in a 9.63% increase in the average dynamic load coefficient of the support. The roof subsidence model based on advance speed is proposed to provide theoretical support for rational mining design and mining-pressure-control early warning for a fully mechanised longwall face.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the biggest disruptive events of recent decades and has had a global effect on society and the economy. The political regulations resulting from COVID-19 also led to significant changes in physical grocery shopping. However, the specific impact of COVID-19 on consumer satisfaction at the customer end of retail supply chains, i.e., the point-of-sale (PoS), has not yet been addressed. By gathering and analyzing consumer satisfaction data (ratings) and sentiments (evaluation comments) available on the open web, the current study evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on consumer satisfaction at the PoS. Focusing on the five biggest retail chains in Austria, the results show that there was a general and significant decline in consumer satisfaction due to the pandemic. The results also show a high impact of political regulations on consumer satisfaction. Furthermore, the text-mining based analysis of evaluation comments indicate that store layout and facilities, as well as product availability and waiting time had a great impact on consumer satisfaction. In total, over 533,000 consumer satisfaction ratings and over 153,000 textual comments have been analyzed, providing the basis for a comprehensive and sound discussion of the impact of COVID-19 on consumer satisfaction and perceptions. Future research could focus on applying the used data analysis technique and the adapted consumer sentiment dimensions in different settings, such as countries other than Austria or smaller retail chains.

The development of forecasting models for the evaluation of potential slope instability after rainfall events represents an important issue for the scientific community. This topic has received considerable impetus due to the climate change effect on territories, as several studies demonstrate that an increase in global warming can significantly influence the landslide activity and stability conditions of natural and artificial slopes. A consolidated approach in evaluating rainfall-induced landslide hazard is based on the integration of rainfall forecasts and physically based (PB) predictive models through deterministic laws. However, considering the complex nature of the processes and the high variability of the random quantities involved, probabilistic approaches are recommended in order to obtain reliable predictions. A crucial aspect of the stochastic approach is represented by the definition of appropriate probability density functions (pdfs) to model the uncertainty of the input variables as this may have an important effect on the evaluation of the probability of failure (PoF). The role of the pdf definition on reliability analysis is discussed through a comparison of PoF maps generated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations performed over a study area located in the Umbria region of central Italy. The study revealed that the use of uniform pdfs for the random input variables, often considered when a detailed geotechnical characterization for the soil is not available, could be inappropriate.

Abstract. We present a new method of analyzing measurements of mesospheric dust made with DUSTY rocket-borne Faraday cup probes. It can yield the variation in fundamental dust parameters through a mesospheric cloud with an altitude resolution down to 10 cm or less if plasma probes give the plasma density variations with similar height resolution. A DUSTY probe was the first probe that unambiguously detected charged dust and aerosol particles in the Earth's mesosphere. DUSTY excluded the ambient plasma by various biased grids, which however allowed dust particles with radii above a few nanometers to enter, and it measured the flux of charged dust particles. The flux measurements directly yielded the total ambient dust charge density. We extend the analysis of DUSTY data by using the impact currents on its main grid and the bottom plate as before, together with a dust charging model and a secondary charge production model, to allow the determination of fundamental parameters, such as dust radius, charge number, and total dust density. We demonstrate the utility of the new analysis technique by considering observations made with the DUSTY probes during the MAXIDUSTY rocket campaign in June–July 2016 and comparing the results with those of other instruments (lidar and photometer) also used in the campaign. In the present version we have used monodisperse dust size distributions.

The nonlinear dynamics are studied for a supported cylinder subjected to axial flow. A nonlinear model is presented for dynamics of the cylinder supported at both ends. The nonlinear terms considered here are the quadratic viscous force and the structural nonlinear force induced by the lateral motions of the cylinder. Using two-mode discretized equation, numerical simulations are carried out for the dynamical behavior of the cylinder to explain the flutter instability found in the experiment. The results of numerical analysis show that at certain value of flow velocity the system loses stability by divergence, and the new equilibrium (the buckled configuration) becomes unstable at higher flow leading to post-divergence flutter. The effect of the friction drag coefficients on the behavior of the system is investigated.
