Relevance. Separate issues in anthropomorphic sizes of relative norm of the ideal smile, its qualitative and qualitative parameters have not been addressed to sufficiently and are not properly reflected in scientific literature.Purpose. To determine distinguishing features in average smile parameters of the smile in male and female patients with orthognathic occlusion.Materials and methods. A clinical and anthropometric evaluation of parameters in main smile types was carried out for 150 young males and 150 young females aged 19-24 who had identical physiological development parameters.Results. It has been revealed that occurrence frequency of main smile types in patients with orthognathic occlusion has pronounced signs of sexual dimorphism which in over one half of the cases lies in predominance of the incisal smile type in males (52.7%) and the fascial type in females (55.3%). Occurence frequency of the cervical smile type totaled 25% among the studied patients of both genders. Average vertical size parameters in the incisal smile lies within the diapason of 3.91-4.91mm with surpassing by 1mm in males. Analogical data for the fascial smile type form the diapason of 6.21-6.73mm with surpassing by 0.52mm in females. The cervical smile type is characterised by larger vertical size forming the diapason of 7.94-8.91mm with surpassing by 0.97mm in males.Conclusion. The results of the study have shown that the “beautiful and ideal smile” is a relative concept having varied anthropometric characteristics and pronounced signs of sexual dimorphism lying in a broad spectrum of the dentofacial system norm notion with specific vectors for individual morphological deviations.

The water hammer can cause great risks in water supply pipe systems. A surge tank is a kind of general water hammer control device. In order to improve the behavior of the surge tank, a self-adaptive auxiliary control (SAC) system was proposed in this paper. The system can optimize the response of the surge tank according to the transient pressure. The numerical model and the matched boundary conditions were established to simulate the improved surge tank and optimize the SAC system. Then, various transient responses were simulated by the proposed model with different parameters set. The proposed system is validated by comparing the water hammer process in a river-pipe-valve (RLV) system with and without SAC. The results show that the SAC can greatly improve the water hammer control of the pipeline and the water level oscillation of the surge tank. With the SAC system, the required vertical size of the surge tank can be significantly reduced with the desired water hammer control function.

Liquid fuel is introduced as spray into a gaseous crossflow in many combustion applications like afterburners in gas turbines, ramjet and scramjet combustors. The transport phenomenon of a polydisperse polykinetic spray injected with an inclination in a crossflow has been analysed using Quadrature Method of Moments. Providing an inclination angle to the spray has been accompanied with a more or less uniform distribution of particles, unlike a distinct segregation of larger and smaller diameter particles as observed in the case of vertical injection. The upstream inclined injection in the crossflow yielded a region of stagnation of particles, irrespective of their sizes. This region corresponds to the location where the spray particles equilibrate with the crossflow, whereby they lose their momentum and are swept away by the carrier phase. The downstream injection, on the other hand, showed distinct horizontal and vertical size-based segregation along with regions of accumulation of particles.

Organically modified ceramics are used as photoresistors in the present work. The role of every ingredient played in two photon polymerization process is analyzed. A simple, compact and easy to locate experimental scheme is designed to fabricate nanorods in Ormocer. Based on the threshold theory of photon intensity, the lateral size dependences and vertical size dependences of nanorods on laser power and scanning speed are investigated, respectively. Through systematically changing processing parameters, a 136[Formula: see text]nm Ormocer suspended nanorod which is beyond diffraction limit resolution is obtained when [Formula: see text]m/s, [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mW. By this means, two photon polymerization techniques show great potential to obtain a limiting resolution of Ormocer. What is more, micro gear, micro chair, photonic crystal and micro annular lens are fabricated in two photon polymerization in order to exhibit excellent mechanical and optical property of Ormocer.

The behaviour of a turbulent region generated within a linearly-stratified fluid by an external energy source has been studied experimentally. A monoplanar grid that generated small-amplitude oscillations was used as the energy source. The results show that the mixed layer initially grows rapidly, as in an unstratified fluid, but when its physical vertical size becomes rf ∼ (K1/N)½, at a time tf ≈ 4.0 N−1, where N is the buoyancy frequency and K1 is the ‘action’ of the grid, the buoyancy forces become dominant and drastically reduce further vertical growth of the patch. While the patch size remains at rf, a well-defined density interfacial layer is formed at the entrainment interface. An important feature of the interfacial layer is the presence of internal waves, excited by the mixed-layer turbulence. If the grid oscillations are continuously maintained, the interfacial waves break and cause turbulent mixing, thereby increasing the size of the patch beyond rf at a very slow rate. Theoretical estimates are made for the growth characteristics and are compared with the experimental results.

The apex of the bony orbit and its soft tissues are most difficult to investigate. Meanwhile just pathological processes in this area cause several serious conditions which could lead to blindness and in many cases to disability. Purpose: to study linear and volume indices of the bony orbital apex and its soft content in normal conditions. Material and methods: 210 patients (266 orbits) are examined. Both orbits were investigated in 56 patients (112 orbits) with no orbital pathology. In patients with unilateral orbital involvement, the normal orbit was investigated (154 orbits). Among examined patients, 86 were men and 124 women. Mean age was 41.2 ± 10.4 years. The CT scan according to the standard technique obtaining axial and frontal sections was carried out in all patients (section thickness was 1.0 mm; interval - 1.0 mm). Results and discussions: The average horizontal size of the external part of an orbit in men was 22.2 ± 0.41 mm (range 17-28 mm). The same size in women was 21.4 ± 0.23 mm (17-26 mm). The vertical size of the external part of the orbit in men is equal to 23.12 ± 0.38 mm, in average and at women - 23.4 ± 0.31 mm. Orbital apex length is 16-24 mm (average 20.1 ± 0.47 mm) in men, in women it is 15-23 mm (average 19,2 ± 0,35 mm). In the article, normal volume of the orbital apex, of the optic nerve, extraocular muscles and orbital fat are presented. Ratios of volume characteristics of studied structures of the orbital apex are displayed. Conclusions: Volume characteristics of the orbital apex and its soft content could be useful to understand the pathogenesis of pathological processes in this area. They could be also used to carry out the differential diagnosis between true and false proptosis, and for surgery planning.
