ABSTRACTPyrolysis of polymer precursors (polysilazane) is a technologically and economically interesting way to produce thin ceramic coatings. However, many cracks appear and decohesion occurs during pyrolysis when the ceramic coatings (SiOCN) are thicker than 0.5 micrometers. In order to understand these cracking phenomena, the coatings are mechanically characterized by nanoindentation at different stages of the pyrolysis heat treatment.During pyrolysis, the cracking temperature is detected by in-situ optical observation. The thickness of the coatings varies during pyrolysis from 3 micrometers at the polymeric state to 1 micrometer at the ceramic state. The coatings' properties, hardness and Young's modulus are evaluated after heat treatment, taking into account the substrate's influence. A large variation of these properties occurs at the cracking temperature. Both the hardness and the Young's modulus are multiplied by a factor of 10. By analysing these results, we show that cracking is correlated with the evolution of the coatings' mechanical properties during the transformation.

The aim of this work is to investigate the β-Ti-phase-stabilizing effect of vanadium and iron added to Ti-6Al-4V powder by means of heterogeneous powder mixtures and in situ alloy-formation during laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). The resulting microstructure was analyzed by metallographic methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by compression tests, both prior to and after heat-treating. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed a homogeneous element distribution, proving the feasibility of in situ alloying by LPBF. Due to the β-phase-stabilizing effect of V and Fe added to Ti-6Al-4V, instead of an α’-martensitic microstructure, an α/β-microstructure containing at least 63.8% β-phase develops. Depending on the post L-PBF heat-treatment, either an increased upsetting at failure (33.9%) compared to unmodified Ti-6Al-4V (28.8%), or an exceptional high compressive yield strength (1857 ± 35 MPa compared to 1100 MPa) were measured. The hardness of the in situ alloyed material ranges from 336 ± 7 HV0.5, in as-built condition, to 543 ± 13 HV0.5 after precipitation-hardening. Hence, the range of achievable mechanical properties in dependence of the post-L-PBF heat-treatment can be significantly expanded in comparison to unmodified Ti-6Al-4V, thus providing increased flexibility for additive manufacturing of titanium parts.

Bulky sample was made by using TIG wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, in which Ф1.6 mm filler wire of in-situ TiB2/Al-Si composites was selected as deposition metal, following by T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the bulky sample before and after heat treatment were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the texture of the original samples parallel to the weld direction and perpendicular to the weld direction was similar consisting of columnar dendrites and equiaxed crystals. After T6 heat treatment, the hardness of the sample was increased to 115.85 HV from 62.83 HV, the yield strength of the sample was 273.33 MPa, the average tensile strength was 347.33 MPa, and the average elongation after fracture was 7.96%. Although pore defects existed in the fracture, yet the fracture of the sample was ductile fracture.

Al–Si–Mg based alloys can provide high strength and ductility to satisfy the increasing demands of thin wall castings for automotive applications. This study has investigated the effects of T6 heat-treatment on the microstructures, the local mechanical properties of alloy phases and the fracture behavior of high vacuum die-cast AlSiMgMn alloys using in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in combination with nano-indentation testing. The microstructures of the alloys at as-cast and T6 treated conditions were compared and analyzed. It is found that the T6 heat treatment plays different roles in affecting the hardness and the Young’s modulus of alloy phases. This study also found that the T6 heat treatment would influence the failure modes of the alloys. The mechanisms of crack propagation in the as-cast and T6 treated alloys were also analyzed and discussed.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing technologies. Fabricating nickel-based superalloys with SLM has garnered significant interest from the industry and the research community alike due to the excellent high temperature properties and thermal stability exhibited by the alloys. Haynes-282 alloy, a γ′-phase strengthened Ni-based superalloy, has shown good high temperature mechanical properties comparable to alloys like R-41, Waspaloy, and 263 alloy but with better fabricability. A study and comparison of the effect of different heat-treatment routes on microstructure and mechanical property evolution of Haynes-282 fabricated with SLM is lacking in the literature. Hence, in this manuscript, a thorough investigation of microstructure and mechanical properties after a three-step heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) has been conducted. In-situ heat-treatment experiments were conducted in a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study γ′ precipitate evolution. γ′ precipitation was found to start at 950 °C during in-situ heat-treatment. Insights from the in-situ heat-treatment were used to decide the aging heat-treatment for the alloy. The three-step heat-treatment was found to increase yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). HIP process enabled γ′ precipitation and recrystallization of grains of the as-printed samples in one single step.
