Early Chinese immigrants in America centered on the Chinatown, which had fixed blocks and scope of activities. The distinguishing features of its ethnic culture and economy were formed by the ethnic Chinese immigrants who dwelt there. The Chinatown has become identified with the early Chinese immigrants and become one of the most unique residential areas for any ethnic group. Ever since the 1965 amendments to the American Immigration and Nationality Act, however, new Chinese arrivals no longer inhabit Chinatowns after they reach the United States. Without stationary blocks and scopes of activities, new Chinese immigrant communities have become enclaves accommodating multiple ethnic groups instead of one particular ethnicity. These communities are closely connected to a variety of ethnic features and have a tremendously different appearance from that of Chinatown. This transformation is still in progress and has been widely-considered by many scholars researching overseas ethnic Chinese immigrants. Flushing, in New York, is the largest Chinese immigrant community in the twenty-first century. This essay takes it as a case study to look into the evolution of Chinese immigrant communities in the United States. 早期美國華人移民以唐人街為中心,它有固定的街區,一定的活動範圍。老移民住在這個範圍內,形成它鮮明的族裔文化和經濟特色,贏得了早期華人移民的認同,成為美國最具特色的族裔聚居區之一。自1965年新移民法修改後,新移民移入美國,不再以唐人街為居住區域,新華人移民社區無固定的街區,無固定的活動範圍,無單一的族裔聚集區,甚或是多族裔聚集的區域,靠著族裔特色融匯在一起,與過去的唐人街特色迥異,這種改變正在持續中,也是現今研究海外華人的學者關注的課題。本文欲藉由21世紀全球最大的華人移民社區—紐約的法拉盛(Flushing) 為例,探討美國華人移民社區的演變。 (This article is in English).

Based on previously unearthed documents from the Russia’s State Historical Archive and the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire the article explores the history of the first Russian Orthodox parish in New York City and construction of Saint-Nickolas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the city. It was a protracted and complicated interagency process that involved Russian Orthodox mission in the United States, Russia’s Foreign Ministry and its missions in the United States, the Holy Governing Synod, Russia’s Ministry of Finance and the State Council. The principal actors were the bishops Nicholas (Ziorov) and especially Tikhon (Bellavin), Ober-Prosecutor of the Holy Governing Synod Konstantine Pobedonostsev and Reverend Alexander Khotovitsky. This case study of the Cathedral history reveals an interaction of ecclesiastical and civil authorities in which private and civic initiative was combined with strict bureaucratic rules and procedures.

Confucian heritage culture holds that a good education is the path to upward social mobility as well as the road to realizing an individual’s fullest potential in life. In both China and Chinese diasporic communities around the world, education is of utmost importance and is central to childrearing in the family. In this paper, we address one of the most serious resettlement issues that new Chinese immigrants face—children’s education. We examine how receiving contexts matter for parenting, what immigrant parents do to promote their children’s education, and what enables parenting strategies to yield expected outcomes. Our analysis is based mainly on data collected from face-to-face interviews and participant observations in Chinese immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York in the United States and in Singapore. We find that, despite different contexts of reception, new Chinese immigrant parents hold similar views and expectations on children’s education, are equally concerned about achievement outcomes, and tend to adopt overbearing parenting strategies. We also find that, while the Chinese way of parenting is severely contested in the processes of migration and adaptation, the success in promoting children’s educational excellence involves not only the right set of culturally specific strategies but also tangible support from host-society institutions and familial and ethnic social networks. We discuss implications and unintended consequences of overbearing parenting.

Throughout the early 20th century, A. Thomas Nelson took snapshots while traveling the United States and Canada. His wife, Catherine Nelson, made a selection of these and placed them within eight photographic albums, later acquired by the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York. Using one of these, “Snapshots from Travels in the United States and Canada (1904–1940),” as a case study, this article explores preservation practices for early 20th-century vernacular albums. While such albums are a valuable part of any collection, they present many complex preservation challenges due to the variety of materials contained within a single object. Critical questions about cataloging, digitizing, and rehousing methods guide decisions on how to stabilize the album's fragile condition and allow for access. This case study offers insight for collection managers and archivists who find themselves caring for similar snapshot albums.

The goal of this questionnaire-based study was to compare the relative endorsement of specific parenting patterns among two ethnic Chinese groups rearing preschool children: Chinese parents in China ( N = 117) and first-generation Chinese immigrant parents in the United States ( N = 94). A significant interaction effect was found between country and gender on the nonreasoning/punitive dimension of authoritarian parenting, revealing that Chinese fathers endorsed this pattern more strongly than both Chinese immigrant fathers and Chinese mothers. There was also a significant interaction effect between country and gender on the practice of shaming/love withdrawal, indicating that Chinese fathers espoused this pattern more strongly than Chinese immigrant fathers and Chinese mothers, but Chinese immigrant mothers endorsed it more strongly than Chinese immigrant fathers. Furthermore, it was revealed that Chinese immigrants endorsed beliefs about maternal involvement more strongly than their Chinese counterparts. The results are discussed in the context of cultural and contextual influences.

AbstractJascha Heifetz (1901–87) promoted a modern brand of musical eclecticism, recording, performing, and editing adaptations of folk and popular songs while remaining dedicated to the standard violin repertoire and the compositions of his contemporaries. This essay examines the complex influences of his displacement from Eastern Europe and assimilation to the culture of the United States on both the hybridity of his repertoire and the critical reception he received in his new home. It takes as its case study Heifetz's composition of the virtuosic showpiece “Hora Staccato,” based on a Romany violin performance he heard in Bucharest, and his later adaptation of the music into an American swing hit he titled “Hora Swing-cato.” Finally, the essay turns to the field of popular song to consider how two of the works Heifetz performed most frequently were adapted for New York Yiddish radio as Tin Pan Alley–style songs whose lyrics narrate the early twentieth-century immigrant experience. The performance and arrangement history of many of Heifetz's miniatures reveals the multivalent ways in which works in his repertoire, and for some listeners Heifetz himself, were reinterpreted, adapted, and assimilated into American culture.

Federal funding for pedestrian and bicycle transportation has increased over the past 15 years, with a resulting increase in shared-use pathways, paved shoulders, bicycle lanes, and sidewalks in many parts of the United States. This has caused communities to ask questions: Where is pedestrian and bicycle activity taking place? What effect does facility construction have on levels of bicycling and walking? What are the characteristics of nonmotorized transportation users? How many miles of pedestrian and bicycle facilities are available? Where are existing facilities located? This paper provides a summary of recent research that was sponsored by FHWA and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center to review and evaluate bicycle and pedestrian data collection methods throughout the United States. It uses a case study approach to evaluate pedestrian and bicycle data collection in 29 different agencies throughout the country in communities ranging in size from 6,000 residents (Sandpoint, Idaho) to 8 million residents (New York City). These case studies are analyzed in the following data collection categories: manual counts, automated counts, surveys targeting nonmotorized transportation users, surveys sampling a general population, inventories, and spatial analyses. The results provide information about the methods and the optimum timing for pedestrian and bicycle data collection; emerging technologies that can be used to gather and analyze data; the benefits, limitations, and costs of different data collection techniques; and implications for a national data collection strategy.
