Ownership and Productivity in Vertically-Integrated Firms: Evidence from the Chinese Steel Industry

We study productivity differences in vertically-integrated steel facilities using equipment-level information on inputs and output for each of the main stages in the value chain. We obtain stage-level productivity estimates by estimating a multi-stage production system and then integrate them into estimates for integrated facilities. At this level, we do not find statistically significant differences in productivity by ownership. This conceals important differences upstream and downstream in the value chain: Private firms outperform in pig-iron and steelmaking, but lag in sintering. Inferior access to higher quality raw materials and use of less automated technology are likely sources of these differences.

This paper delves into the evaluation of an operation planning for a realistic multi-stage, single-product Kanban managed production system with time varying production rates and finished goods demands. The study pursued is to dynamically and systematically manipulate the production rate of each stage and the raw material orders at the first stage which are corresponding to the minimum integrated inventory costs incurred due to raw materials, finished products and work-in-process (WIP) inventories under a varying demand of finished product. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed operation planning methodology for a multistage Kanban managed production and supply chain system.

Structure of the Russian export and import of steel industry products presented by results of 9 months of 2019 operation. It was shown, that the total share of pig iron, ferroalloys and semi-products (40.3%) in the ferrous metals export from Russia is practically the same as the share of rolled products and steel pipes (39.4%), whereas the shares in the import structure were 7.7 and 75% accordingly. The share the far abroad countries in the Russian export and import of finished steel products (in natural terms) accounted for 80.6 and 28.7% accordingly, while the share of CIS countries – 19.4 and 71.3% accordingly. For 9 months of 2019 the Russian export of semi-products declined by 10.9% comparing with the analogue period of 2018 and accounted for 10.9 m tons. 54.6% of the total export shipping of semi-products were directed to Mexico, Turkey, Egypt and Taiwan. Within the nearest years the Russian export of semi-products and billets, in particular, will be effected by the further development of the semi-products production in in the countries of Middle East, Turkey, Vietnam and India. The domestic market remained to be more attractive for many Russian companies. For the 9 months of 2019, export of long and flat products accounted for 3 and 5.7 m tons accordingly, declining comparing with the analogue period of the previous year by 11 and 15.6% accordingly. Import of long and flat products decreased by 12 and 0.5%, accounting for 1.0 and 2.9 m tons accordingly. By the results of 9 months of 2019, import declined and export shipping of coated sheet increased. Taking into account the expansion of steel grades assortment by Russian plants, increase of capacities for production of sheet with different coatings, this tendency is likely to remain.

Palm oil industry in Indonesia has been growing rapidly. But, unfortunately the growth is only effective on upstream industry with low value products, such that potential downstream value added are not explored proportionally. The government is therefore in the process of developing an appropriate policy to strengthen the national palm oil downstream industry. This paper proposes that an approriate policy for developing palm oil downstream industry could be derived from the maps of value chain and existing technology capability of the industry. The result recommends that government policy should emphasize on the supply of raw materials, infrastructure and utilities, as well as developing the missing value chain industry, especially ethoxylation and sulfonation.

With its stable economy, good governance, education system, and above all the abundant natural resources, will Australia to take its place in the global economy by becoming more entrepreneurial and accelerating its rate of growth, or will it get infected with the so-called Dutch disease? It has been successful in managing trade ties with fast-developing economies like China and India as well as developed countries like the United States. It has participated in the growth of China by providing iron ore and coal. Because it is a low-risk country, it has enabled inflow of large foreign capital investments. A lot will depend on its capability and willingness to invest the capital available in entrepreneurial ventures, its ability to capture the full value chain of natural resources, and to export the finished products instead of raw materials, while building a robust manufacturing sector.

The purpose of the study is to improve the efficiency of production areas of multi-stage production with the possibility of rational use of equipment capacity and stocks of WIP inventory in the operation conditions of the automated operational scheduling system. Features of the considered problem regarding operative calendar planning are: necessity of processing raw materials at several stages according to the flow chart; an array of the equipment which demands division of work into three periods for each party; availability of planned and unscheduled equipment downtime; necessity to complete set of orders from several suborders; availability of incomplete production in a warehouse; restrictions in order and timing of orders. In the work, the authors construct a mathematical model with the use of multidimensional matroids with structured elements in the construction of free time scale for equipment loading.
