The article argues that in constructions where there is more than one phrase at a phasal edge, only the highest edge is available for movement and anaphor binding. This shows that only the outermost edge counts as the edge of a phase for the Phase Impenetrability Condition ( PIC). The article also demonstrates that moving the element that counts as the phasal edge in multiple specifier/adjunct cases can affect the PIC status of the remaining edges. These conclusions provide a new argument for the contextuality of phasehood. A number of recent works have argued that the phasal status of a phrase can be affected by the syntactic context in which it occurs. This article goes one step further: it shows that the concept of phasal edge, more precisely the status of a specifier/adjunct regarding the PIC, can also be affected by the syntactic context in which the specifier/adjunct occurs. The article also discusses several issues regarding the syntax and semantics of adjectives, possessors, and demonstratives, including what Partee (2006) calls familiar demonstratives, as well as anaphor binding.

The concealed track record of Flandria Film during the Second World WarIn addition to the publication of the book Filmen voor Vlaanderen. Vlaamse beweging, propaganda en film (Filming for Flanders: Flemish Movement, Propaganda and Film) this article reconstructs the complex war history of Flandria Film. The business manager Clemens De Landtsheers hoped to resume his filming activities after May 1940. However, he was confronted with a film landscape that had been reformed according to a German model. As film distributor Flandria Film was unwanted. But on the basis of the productions he had realised during the Interbellum period it was impossible to deny De Landtsheer the status of producer. The challenge of producing short ‘cultural films’ himself proved to be too difficult. Thus Flandria Film became an empty shell, a flag that other supporters of the Flemish Movement with film ambitions liked to use for shelter. De Landtsheer experimented with this by allowing Lode De Kempeneer to make the film Zingend Vlaanderen (Singing Flanders) (1942), which still afforded him as the nominal producer a certain kind of control. He went one step further by releasing that control all together. The fact that Flandria Film produced films such as De Brigade waakt (The Brigade keeps vigil) (1944) and Vlaanderen te weer (Flanders in opposition) (1944), directed by Frans Develter caused De Landtsheer to keep silent about this episode after the war. This article casting a light on the microcosm of film production in occupied Belgium, following on from recent research about Henri Storck exposes the activities of ‘black filmmakers’ who disappeared from the film sector after the Liberation, as well as those of some ‘white’ colleagues, who apparently were ‘a darker shade of grey’ than had been assumed until now.

AbstractThe major objective of this article is to discuss the status of nominal projections in Polish within the phase theory, with a special reference to the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC) (Chomsky 2000, 2001). Throughout the paper, it is argued that certain case marking properties internal to Polish QPs showing the Genitive of Quantification in particular, indicate that they do not observe the PIC in that the NP-complement domain to Q in [QP Q [NP]] is still available for operations of narrow syntax at the derivational stage when the verbal projection is formed. In consequence, the transfer of the NP-complement domain to Q to PF/LF is delayed. Moreover, an attempt is made to show, on the basis of binding facts and extraction, that internal structure of Polish nominals including possessives does not exactly follow the proposals made in Bošković (2005, 2009, 2013, 2014) for analogous Serbo-Croatian cases. Instead, it is proposed that Polish nominals feature a more complex architecture typical of a subclass of SC nominals, namely higher numerals. Crucially, Polish nominals are more complex than an NP with multiple levels of adjunction.

SUMMARYThe recovery of virulence by means of reversion of a live streptomycin-dependent (Sm D)Salmonella typhimuriumvaccine was studied in CD–I Swiss mice. Initially, a one–step Sm D mutant was obtained from a virulent streptomycin-sensitive (Sm S)S. typhimuriumstrain. Afterwards, two pools of streptomycin-independent (Sm I) revertants were prepared from the Sm D strain. The virulence of the Sm D strain and of the Sm I revertants was tested intraperitoneally. In the virulence testing the original suspension of the Sm I revertants, as well as their 1st and 10th passages on plain medium, medium + 50 μg. streptomycin/ml, and medium + 1000 μg. streptomycin/ml, were used. The results show that the Sm D mutant was avirulent, its avirulence being due to an intrinsic, genetic quality. The Sm I revertants, compared to the original Sm S strain, also displayed a lack of virulence. However, afterwards, the Sm I revertants behaved quite differently, according to their subsequent passages. Indeed, there was an increase in virulence after passages on plain medium, whereas after similar passages on medium containing the drug, the virulence not only failed to increase, but disappeared almost completely. Moreover, the passages on medium containing 1000 μg. streptomycin/ml, induced a return to the status of drug–dependence. The danger of recovery of virulence by means of revertants is evaluated.

On the basis of a number of cases where the status of X with respect to phasehood changes depending on the syntactic context in which X occurs, I argue for a contextual approach to phasehood whereby the highest phrase in the extended projection of all lexical categories—N, P, A, and V (passive and active)—functions as a phase. The relevant arguments concern extraction and ellipsis. I argue that ellipsis is phase-constrained: only phases and complements of phase heads can in principle undergo ellipsis. I show that Ā-extraction out of an ellipsis site is possible only if the ellipsis site corresponds to a phasal complement. I also provide evidence for the existence of several AspectPs, all of which have morphological manifestations, in the VP domain of English and show that they crucially affect the phasehood of this domain. The article provides a uniform account of a number of superficially different constructions involving extraction and ellipsis from Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, Turkish, and English.

One step melanoma surgery (OSMS) is applicable to all patients with clear clinical and dermatoscopic criteria for thin cutaneous melanomas or melanoma in situ lesions, even without the need for preoperative tumour thickness measurement. Amelanotic melanomas and melanomas with clinical and dermatoscopical features for regression zones could be problematic when applying the OSMS.  The methodology could be also applicable to all groups of patients where the tumour thickness could be measured preoperatively/by ultrasound (while in parallel also determining the status of the locoregional lymph nodes). For tumours with a tumour thickness between 2 and 4 mm, but also over 4mm the OSMS seems to be the correct choice.

This paper focuses on the Jubilean portrayal of Shem, Isaac, and Jacob as beloved sons. In all three cases, their parents’ affection for their scions is modeled on Jacob’s favoring of Joseph, thus indicating that Shem, Isaac, and Jacob were loved more than their brothers. The themes of human parental love, divine election, birthright, and inheritance being interwoven in all three cases, human parental love functions primarily to signal the status of those sons who form the heirs through whom the Israelite line will be maintained. Their characterization as “beloved” also highlights Israel’s prominence amongst the nations – their siblings, in contrast, being destined to become the fathers of the gentile nations. On basis of the fact that the biblical texts relate the image of God as father to His love for and election of His children, Jubilees also presents human parental love as following (upon) God’s election of a favored son. The combination of the motif of God as a loving father with the verse that “Because He loved your fathers, He chose their heirs after them” (Deut 4:37) appears to have led the Jubilean author to assume that the Israelites’ ancestors were the object of divine parental love. He then takes this idea one step further, presenting patriarchal parental love as paralleling God’s love/election.

Nature-based solutions have not been able to actively involve citizens and to address successfully food security, poverty alleviation, and inequality in urban areas. The Edible City approach promises a strategic step towards the development of sustainable, livable, and healthy cities. We introduce the conceptional framework of Edible City Solutions (ECS), including different forms of urban farming combined with closed loop systems for sustainable water, nutrient, and waste management. We review scientific evidence on ECS benefits for urban regeneration and describe the status quo of ECS in Rotterdam, Andernach, Oslo, Heidelberg, and Havana as case studies. We provide an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) to explore the capacity of ECS to enhance multifunctionality of urban landscapes with special focus on social cohesion and quality of life. Based on this we identify and discuss strategies for fostering socially relevant implementations for the case study cities and beyond.

Background and Aim: Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is classified as Retroviridae gammaretrovirus. FeLV occurs worldwide, including Malaysia. Thus far, only one decade-old study on molecular characterization of Malaysian FeLV isolates exists, which resulted in a scarcity of updated information of current FeLV isolates circulating in Malaysia. This study was conducted to determine the status of FeLV in clinically ill cats and to study the molecular characterization and phylogenetic relatedness of the current isolates. Materials and Methods: Convenience sampling was performed in 20 cats from the Gasing Veterinary Hospital in Selangor. Plasma and saliva samples were collected from 15 clinically ill cats and 5 healthy cats subjected to one-step reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with primers targeting a highly conserved gene of U3-LTR-gag. Results: Two clinically ill cats' plasma and saliva samples tested positive for FeLV RNA. Partial nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the current isolates were 94-99% homologous to the previous Malaysian and Japanese FeLV isolates. Conclusion: Current FeLV isolates from this study displayed higher similarity with the previous Malaysian isolates, signifying that a similar FeLV strain circulated among the cat population in Selangor.

One measure of the maturity of a device technology is the ease and reliability of applying contact metallurgy. Compared to metal contact of silicon, the status of GaAs metallization is still at its primitive stage. With the advent of GaAs MESFET and integrated circuits, very stringent requirements were placed on their metal contacts. During the past few years, extensive researches have been conducted in the area of Au-Ge-Ni in order to lower contact resistances and improve uniformity. In this paper, we report the results of TEM study of interfacial reactions between Ni and GaAs as part of the attempt to understand the role of nickel in Au-Ge-Ni contact of GaAs.N-type, Si-doped, (001) oriented GaAs wafers, 15 mil in thickness, were grown by gradient-freeze method. Nickel thin films, 300Å in thickness, were e-gun deposited on GaAs wafers. The samples were then annealed in dry N2 in a 3-zone diffusion furnace at temperatures 200°C - 600°C for 5-180 minutes. Thin foils for TEM examinations were prepared by chemical polishing from the GaA.s side. TEM investigations were performed with JE0L- 100B and JE0L-200CX electron microscopes.
