Spectroscopic ellipsometry has been successfully used to characterize the CdS/CdTe heterojunction solar cell deposited on TEC15 glass. The effects of copper treatment on the optical properties of a cadmium chloride treated photovoltaic device were investigated using ellipsometry. No changes in either the band gaps or critical points of CdTe layer were noticed as a result of copper treatment. The copper treated CdTe layer exhibited a higher refractive index in the visible and longer wavelengths (≤3 eV), as compared with the untreated layer. This was attributed to the increased disorder in the case of copper treated layer.

Research was conducted to determine environmental and cultural factors influencing triallate phytotoxicity to hard red spring wheat. Triallate injured ‘Alex’ wheat more than ‘Coteau’ but injury was not influenced by triallate application date. Wild oat control was greater when triallate was applied immediately before seeding compared to 12 d before seeding. Triallate tolerance in wheat did not relate to solid stem characteristic. Injury was highest when wheat was seeded in a 4-cm incorporated triallate layer and least when wheat was seeded below the treated layer. However, triallate injury to wheat was similar at both seeding depths within the 8-cm incorporated triallate layer. Triallate at 1.1 kg ai ha-1reduced wheat fresh weight approximately 33% with a soil at 8 C but over 84% with a soil at 24 C.

Semi-rigid layer is widely used as the base in China. However, the structure has resulted in many premature distresses in asphalt concrete layer. In order to overcome the problem, the composite base is introduced which is composed by both flexible and chemically stabilized material. The internal stresses are calculated by linear multilayer elastic theory and then, a comparison of the stresses of asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base and composite base is provided. The result shows that the composite base composed by all, consisting of the asphalt treated layer, graded crushed stone and cement treated layer is more suitable structure to resist cracking and the structure also has good adaptability to heavy load.

The carbon diffusion in steel, where the carbon diffusivity varies with the carbon content, was solved with the integral methods under the third boundary condition. The variation of carbon diffusivity in steel with the carbon content was described with two different functions, linear dependence and exponential dependence. The integral approximation for both cases was improved with the numerical computation to more accurately predict the carbon profiles. The integral solution is more accurate than the formulation based on the assumption of a constant diffusivity or those based on the assumption of a constant diffusivity and/or constant carbon content at part surface. It is also more easily used in practice than the numerical method to describe the carburising process and predict the carbon content at steel surface and carbon profiles in treated layer.
