This study examined the effectiveness of matrix-training procedures in teaching action + object utterances in both the receptive and expressive language modalities. The subjects were 4 developmentally delayed preschool boys who failed to produce spontaneous, functional two-word utterances. A multiple baseline design across responses with a multiple probe technique was employed. Subjects were taught 4–6 of 48 receptive and 48 expressive responses. Acquisition of a word combination rule was facilitated by the use of familiar lexical items, whereas subsequent acquisition of new lexical knowledge was enhanced by couching training in a previously trained word combination pattern. Although receptive knowledge was not sufficient for the demonstration of corresponding expressive performance for most of the children, only minimal expressive training was required to achieve this objective. For most matrix items, subjects responded receptively before they did so expressively. For 2 subjects, when complete receptive recombinative generalization had not been achieved, expressive training facilitated receptive responding. The results of this study elucidate benefits to training one linguistic aspect (lexical item, word combination pattern) at a time to maximize generalization in developmentally delayed preschoolers.

The rotary diversified diet, used in the management of environmental illness, consists of eliminating prohibited foods from the diet and rotating remaining non-prohibited foods and their “food families” within a regular cycle. We assessed the adequacy of nutrient intakes in 22 women prescribed the diet, described the nature of supplement use, and assessed the relationship between adherence and nutrient intake levels. Except for calcium and folacin intakes, mean nutrient intakes met or exceeded recommended levels. No subjects had calcium intakes above the adequate intake for calcium; 72.7% had folate intakes below the estimated average requirement. Intakes of other nutrients, except thiamin and magnesium, were below the estimated average requirement in less than 25% of the sample; 31.8% and 45.5% of subjects, respectively, had thiamin and magnesium intakes at this level. Those who adhered more closely to the rotary diversified diet had higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, and fibre than did those who followed the diet less closely. Supplements conferred some nutritional benefits; however, supplemental niacin and magnesium intakes exceeded tolerable upper intake levels. Those prescribed the rotary diversified diet require nutrition counselling from dietitians to cope with the complexity and restrictiveness of the diet.

By the end of the 60s, the theory that refined carbohydrates promotes the absorption of saccharolytic Gram-positive microbial species on the tooth surfaces has become generally. Mutans streptococci (Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus) were key players in this theory. On agar plates, Str. mutans produces small, circular colonies, in the presence of glucose, and in the presence of sucrose large, sticky, gelatinous colonies. This gelatinous texture is due to the shell material: mutant 1 3 glucose polymers and dextran 1 ! 6 glucose polymers. Str. mutans are able to survive in the oral cavity with a pH lower than 5.5. That is why consecutive multiple sugar intake promotes the colonization of Str. mutans, which results in dental caries in stagnant zones. As oral pH is continuously shifted to acid, more acid-resistant bacteria appear. Our aim was to identify species in infant-mother pair gingival crevicular bacterial flora, which can be detected on high-sucrose culture media and to underline the jeopardy of vertical oral contamination from mother to infant.
