AbstractConcussion is a global health concern. Despite its high prevalence, a sound understanding of the mechanisms underlying this type of diffuse brain injury remains elusive. It is, however, well established that concussions cause significant functional deficits; that children and youths are disproportionately affected and have longer recovery time than adults; and that individuals suffering from a concussion are more prone to experience additional concussions, with each successive injury increasing the risk of long term neurological and mental health complications. Currently, the most significant challenge in concussion management is the lack of objective, clinically- accepted, brain-based approaches for determining whether an athlete has suffered a concussion. Here, we report on our efforts to address this challenge. Specifically, we introduce a deep learning long short-term memory (LSTM)-based recurrent neural network that is able to distinguish between non-concussed and acute post-concussed adolescent athletes using only short (i.e. 90 s long) samples of resting state EEG data as input. The athletes were neither required to perform a specific task nor expected to respond to a stimulus during data collection. The acquired EEG data were neither filtered, cleaned of artefacts, nor subjected to explicit feature extraction. The LSTM network was trained and validated using data from 27 male, adolescent athletes with sports related concussion, benchmarked against 35 non-concussed adolescent athletes. During rigorous testing, the classifier consistently identified concussions with an accuracy of > 90% and achieved an ensemble median Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC/AUC) equal to 0.971. This is the first instance of a high-performing classifier that relies only on easy-to-acquire resting state, raw EEG data. Our concussion classifier represents a promising first step towards the development of an easy-to-use, objective, brain-based, automatic classification of concussion at an individual level.

AbstractEEG and MEG are well-established non-invasive methods in neuroscientific research and clinical diagnostics. Both methods provide a high temporal but low spatial resolution of brain activity. In order to gain insight about the spatial dynamics of the M/EEG one has to solve the inverse problem, which means that more than one configuration of neural sources can evoke one and the same distribution of EEG activity on the scalp. Artificial neural networks have been previously used successfully to find either one or two dipoles sources. These approaches, however, have never solved the inverse problem in a distributed dipole model with more than two dipole sources. We present ConvDip, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that solves the EEG inverse problem in a distributed dipole model based on simulated EEG data. We show that (1) ConvDip learned to produce inverse solutions from a single time point of EEG data and (2) outperforms state-of-the-art methods (eLORETA and LCMV beamforming) on all focused performance measures. (3) It is more flexible when dealing with varying number of sources, produces less ghost sources and misses less real sources than the comparison methods. (4) It produces plausible inverse solutions for real-world EEG recordings and needs less than 40 ms for a single forward pass. Our results qualify ConvDip as an efficient and easy-to-apply novel method for source localization in EEG and MEG data, with high relevance for clinical applications, e.g. in epileptology and real time applications.

In this study, observation on the differences in features quality of EEG records as a result of training on subjects has been made. The features of EEG records were extracted using two different methods, the root mean square which is acquired from the range between 0.5 and 5 seconds and the average of power spectrum estimation from the frequency range between 20 and 40Hz. All of the data consists of a 4-channel recording and produce good quality classification on artificial neural network, with each of which generates training data accuracy over 90%. However, different results are occured when the trained system is tested on other test data. The test results show that the two systems which are trained using training data with object with color background produce higher accuracy than the other two systems which are trained using training data with object without background color, 63.98% and 60.22% compared to 59.68% and 56.45% accuracy respectively. From the use of the features on the artificial neural network classification system, it can be concluded that the training system using EEG data records derived from the visualization of object with color background produces better features than the visualization of object without color background.

This chapter deals with the application of principal components analysis (PCA) to the field of data mining in electroencephalogram (EEG) processing. The principal components are estimated from the signal by eigen decomposition of the covariance estimate of the input. Alternatively, they can be estimated by a neural network (NN) configured for extracting the first principal components. Instead of performing computationally complex operations for eigenvector estimation, the neural network can be trained to produce ordered first principal components. Possible applications include separation of different signal components for feature extraction in the field of EEG signal processing, adaptive segmentation, epileptic spike detection, and long-term EEG monitoring evaluation of patients in a coma.
