We communicated the application of continuous, on-line, real-time power spectral analysis of systemic arterial pressure (SAP) signals during cardiopulmonary bypass when the heart was functionally but reversibly disconnected from the blood vessels. Based on observations from 15 cases of successfully completed coronary artery bypass grafting procedures, we found that the very low (0.00-0.08 Hz), low (0.08-0.15 Hz)-, high (0.15-0.25 Hz)-, and very high (0.80-1.60 Hz) frequency components of SAP signals exhibited differential changes before, during, and after cardiopulmonary bypass. In particular, the very low-frequency component, which purportedly represents the contribution of vasomotor activity to SAP, presented only a mild decrease in power during hypothermic cardioplegia. Interestingly, the total peripheral resistance also manifested only a slight reduction during the same period. On the other hand, the low-, high-, and very high frequency components were essentially eliminated. These results unveiled an active role for the blood vessels in the maintenance of SAP during cardiopulmonary bypass, possibly as a result of a maintained vasomotor tone as reflected by the sustained very low frequency component of the SAP signals.

Estimation methods and filtering techniques are nowadays an integral part of any computer-based navigation system. The purpose of these techniques is to provide an estimate of required variables which is sufficiently accurate for real-time command and control purposes. Repeatability, which is important for so many applications, is deemed to be a by-product of the estimation process. For this requirement it is not strictly necessary for the process to be accurate, it is sufficient if it is only consistent; these are closely linked but one does not imply the other. The modern approach is to minimize the variance of the noisy observations or the sum of the squares of the residuals, and the methods available for doing this are increasingly refined. The impression given in the literature (and it is extensive) is that data processing can somehow compensate for the shortcomings of the basic sensors with respect to the operation being considered. Within certain limits this is true, but the real reason for the sudden surge of Kalman filtering for real-time on-line applications was the relative simplicity of the computational process. In a way, Kalman filtering has done for estimation theory what the Fast Fourier Transform has done for spectral analysis.The concept is simple enough to state. It consists of combining two independent estimates of a variable to form a weighted mean. One of these estimates is a forecast and the other is the current measurement.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are now in use in many applications, ranging from GIS to route guidance, automatic vehicle location (AVL), air, land, and marine navigation, and many other transportation and geographical based applications. In many applications, the GPS receiver is connected to some form of intelligent electronic system which receives the positional data from the GPS unit and then performs the required operation. When developing and testing GPS-based systems, one of the problems is that it is usually necessary to create GPS-compatible geographical data to simulate a GPS operation in real time. This paper provides the details of a Personal Computer (PC)-based GPS simulator system called GPSIM. The system receives user way-points and routes from Windows-based screen forms and then simulates a GPS operation in real time by generating most of the commonly used GPS sentences. The user-specified waypoints are divided into a number of small segments, each segment specifying a small distance in the direction of the original waypoint. The GPS sentence corresponding to the geographical coordinates of each segment is then sent out of the PC serial port. The system described is an invaluable testing tool for GPS-based system developers and also for people training to learn to use GPS-based products.

This paper describes a PC (personal computer) based titrator which was developed for gradient flow titrations. Concentration gradients were generated electrolytically or volumetrically in small tubes. Complete titration curves can be recorded on-line and evaluated automatically. The titrator can be used with all liquid flow detectors with low axial dispersion. The titrator was evaluated for the titration of thiosulphate with electrogenerated triiodide and for the titration of ammonia with electrogenerated hypobromite after continuous gas dialytic separation of ammonia from the sample solution.
