In this paper, the characteristics of underactuation are analyzed according to the working principle of underwater glider, a complete 6DOF model of underwater glider is established, and the error equation of 3D path tracking is given. Based on the line-of-sight navigation method in three-dimensional space, the nonlinear adaptive control strategy is designed, and the roll angle control law, pitch angle control law, and depth control law of underwater glider are given. The tracking error of underwater glider is proved to be convergent by Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, the results of marine experiments verify that the nonlinear controller designed in this paper can overcome the influence of constant current disturbance under certain conditions and has good robustness and good tracking effect under different ocean current sizes and course angles. Of course, one control method cannot be applicable to all sea conditions. When the angle between the size and direction of the ocean current exceeds a certain value, the tracking control of the underwater glider will show obvious divergence. Therefore, the stability range against the interference of the sea current is given in this paper.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) has been utilized as the material of smart actuators due to the miniaturization and lightweight. However, the nonlinearity and hysteresis of SMA material seriously affect the precise control. In this article, a novel disturbance compensation-based adaptive control scheme is developed to improve the control performance of SMA actuator system. Firstly, the nominal model is constructed based on the physical process. Next, an estimator is developed to online update not only the unmeasured system states but also the total disturbance. Then, the novel adaptive controller, which is composed of the nominal control law and the compensation control law, is designed. Finally, the proposed scheme is evaluated in the SMA experimental setup. The comparison results have demonstrated that the proposed control method can track reference trajectory accurately, reject load variations and stochastic disturbances timely, and exhibit satisfactory robust stability. The proposed control scheme is system independent and has some potential in other types of SMA-actuated systems.

In this paper, finite-time tracking problem of nonholonomic mobile robots for a moving target is considered. First of all, polar coordinates are used to characterize the distance and azimuth between the moving target and the robot. Then, based on the distance and azimuth transported from the sensor installed on the robot, a finite-time tracking control law is designed for the nonholonomic mobile robot by the switching control method. Rigorous proof shows that the tracking error converges to zero in a finite time. Numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

A semiactive seat suspension control method is proposed in this study and applied to attenuate the vibration of the commercial truck seat for enhancing its ride comfort. The semiactive seat suspension system with a magnetorheological damper behaves with undesirable nonlinear properties. The proposed controller is a typical nonlinear controller, which takes the ideal sky-hook controller as the reference model and forces the tracking error vector. The controller has achieved great performance of attenuating vibration and is robust to parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. The relaxation oscillation phenomenon and convergence were also analyzed by the contribution of the phase portrait. As the phase portrait depicted, the sky-hook controller, a weakly nonlinear system, could be approximated by the equivalent linear approximate model. However, the proposed controller, the sky-hook sliding mode controller, is a strongly nonlinear system, which could not be linearized by the regular perturbation theory, and the criterion is given by the phase portrait. The experiment results showed good agreement with the simulation results, and some other matters encountered were also analyzed in the process of application.

This paper describes a vehicle stability control (VSC) system using a vehicle yaw-inertia- and mass-independent adaptive control law. As a primary vehicle active control system, VSC can significantly improve vehicle driving safety for passenger cars and enhance trajectory tracking accuracy for other applications such as autonomous, surveillance, and mobile robot vehicles. For the designs of vehicle dynamic control systems, vehicle yaw inertia and mass are two of the most important parameters. However, in practical applications, vehicle yaw inertia and mass often change with vehicle payload and load distribution. In this paper, an adaptive control law is proposed to treat the vehicle yaw inertia and mass as unknown parameters and automatically address their variations. For the proposed adaptive control law, asymptotic stability of the yaw rate tracking error was proved by a Lyapunov-like analysis for certain vehicle architectures under some reasonable assumptions. The performance of the yaw-inertia- and mass-independent adaptive VSC system was evaluated under several driving conditions (i.e. double lane changing on a slippery surface and braking on a split- μ surface tests) through simulation studies using a high-fidelity full-vehicle model provided by CarSim®.

In this study, a new approach of adaptive control law for controlling robot manipulators using the Lyapunov based theory is derived, thus the stability of an uncertain system is guaranteed. The control law includes a PD feed forward part and a full dynamics feed forward compensation part with the unknown manipulator and payload parameters. The novelty of the obtained result is that an adaptive control algorithm is developed using trigonometric functions depending on manipulator kinematics, inertia parameters and tracking error, and both system parameters and adaptation gain matrix are updated in time.

Abstract Chaos control and synchronization of chaotic systems is seemingly a challenging problem and has got a lot of attention in recent years due to its numerous applications in science and industry. This paper concentrates on the control and synchronization problem of the three-dimensional (3D) Zhang chaotic system. At first, an adaptive control law and a parameter estimation law are achieved for controlling the behavior of the Zhang chaotic system. Then, non-identical synchronization of Zhang chaotic system is provided with considering the Lü chaotic system as the follower system. The synchronization problem and parameters identification are achieved by introducing an adaptive control law and a parameters estimation law. Stability analysis of the proposed method is proved by the Lyapanov stability theorem. In addition, the convergence of the estimated parameters to their truly unknown values are evaluated. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate and to validate the effectiveness of the suggested method.

In the paper, a new adaptive control law for controlling robot manipulators is derived based on the Lyapunov theory; trigonometric functions are used for the derivation of the parameter estimation law. In this note, we have derived a logarithmic parameter estimation law based on a previous paper, and the boundedness of tracking error has been shown.
