The advantage of multimodal transport is that it can deliver the goods to their destination in a reasonable combination of transport modes while ensuring security and punctuality. Multimodal transportation can effectively reduce logistics costs, improve logistics efficiency, and reduce environmental pollution. In the process of multimodal transportation, due to the interference of natural factors (weather, terrain, etc.) and some special human factors, it may have different degrees of impact on the transportation time and transportation safety of different transportation modes. Therefore, when choosing a transportation method, it is necessary to consider the transportation time and transportation safety under the interference. However, the current research on multimodal transport has not considered the impact of external interference on transportation time and transportation safety. Compared with other modes of transportation, external interference has a relatively small impact on railway transportation. Railways can safely deliver goods to their destinations on time. Under the background of China’s huge railway network and advanced heavy-duty technology, this paper establishes a multimodal transport route selection model for considering railway as the core, introduces time penalty cost and damage compensation cost, and takes the lowest comprehensive transportation cost as the model objective under the premise of considering transportation reliability and transportation safety. Finally, taking a multimodal transport network in China as an example, an improved ant colony algorithm is used to solve the model and the results verify the rationality of the model.

This study focuses on the route selection problem of multimodal transportation: When facing a shortage of containers, a transport plan must be designed for freight forwarders that realizes the optimal balance between transportation time and transportation cost. This problem is complicated by two important characteristics: (1) The use of containers is related to transport routes, and they interact with each other; and (2) Different types of containers should be used in different time ranges for different modes of transportation. To solve this problem, we establish a multi-objective optimization model for minimizing the total transportation time, transportation cost and container usage cost. To solve the multi-objective programming model, the normalized normal constraint method (NNCM) is used to obtain Pareto solutions. We conducted a case study considering the transportation of iron ore in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. The results demonstrate that using railway containers and railway transportation as much as possible in route selection can effectively solve the problem of container shortage and balance transportation time and transportation cost.


Trains scheduling is an important problem in railway transportation. Many companies use fixed train timetabling to handle this problem. Train delays can affect the pre-defined timetables and postpone destination arrival times. Besides, delay propagation may affect other trains and degrade the performance of a railway network. An optimal timetable minimizes the total propagated delays in a network. In this paper, we propose a new approach to compute the expected propagated delays in a railway network. As the main contribution of the work, we use Discrete-time Markov chains to model a railway network with a fixed timetable and use probabilistic model checking to approximate the expected delays and the probability of reaching destinations with a desired delay. We use PRISM model checker to apply our approach for analyzing the impact of different train scheduling in double line tracks.

This paper mainly studies on the optimization and algorithm of multimodal transport path. The algorithm considered the transportation time, freight, the different transport ways, and the possibility of occurrence of facelift premise between each node. All of this determined the best path and the mixture of intermodal transport, which minimize the total freight fee. Take the complexity of multimodal optimization into account, this paper optimized the genetic algorithm to transport scheme. The certain population of crossover and mutation rules in application will continue to evolve by coding each path, finally achieve the solution of concrete steps.

In the last few decades, the progression of climate change has made people aware of the need to reduce CO2 emissions. In this study, the effect of this awareness on container transport in Northeast China is used as an empirical case study. Firstly, we propose that the freight demand index, calculated by the entropy weight TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution) method, reflects the degree of container demand in destination cities. Then, we describe five scenarios against the background of China’s container development plan and use them to evaluate the cost and carbon emissions of container rerouting. The overall objective of the study is to assess the effects of changes in port selection on the formation of new routes and multimodal transport. The results show that carbon taxes do not significantly affect multimodal transport networks, and the impact of loading and unloading costs on the total cost is far greater than that of corresponding carbon emissions. Despite the railway transportation capacity of Dalian Port, the results show that Yingkou Port and Dandong Port will expand by 227.8% and 191.4% over 2017, respectively. Therefore, Liaoning Port Group needs to reposition its different ports.

Background: In recent era of technology, the traditional Ant Colony Algorithm (ACO) is insufficient in solving the problem of network congestion and load balance, and network utilization. Methods: This paper proposes an improved ant colony algorithm, which considers the price factor based on the theory of elasticity of demand. The price factor is denominated in the impact on the network load which means indirect control of network load, congestion or auxiliary solution to calculate the idle resources caused by the low network utilization and reduced profits. Results: Experimental results show that the improved algorithm can balance the overall network load, extend the life of path by nearly 3 hours, greatly reduce the risk of network paralysis, and increase the profit of the manufacturer by 300 million Yuan. Conclusion: Furthermore, results shows that the improved method has a great application value in improving the network efficiency, balancing network load, prolonging network life and increasing network operating profit.

Multimodal freight transport in cities is a complex, valid, and vitally important problem. It is more seldom underlined in scientific studies and included in cities’ strategies that devote more attention to passenger transport than freight transport. The increased utilization of multimodal transport matches current transport policy and at the same time, it is one of the most important challenges put before cities striving to achieve sustainable development. In this case, the paper embarks upon the problem of relations between multimodal transport development and the sustainable development of the cities. The objective of the paper is an analysis of the impact of the selected city of the Upper Silesian metropolis on the development of multimodal freight transport and an assessment of the impact of the development of multimodal transport on the sustainable development of the cities of the Upper Silesian metropolis. The authors developed three research questions in order to implement the adopted objective. The process of looking for the answer included four stages. Within the first and second stages, the literature studies and experts’ research allowed for identifying key factors of the multimodal transport development that a city may have an impact on. In the third stage, the research was two-fold and was based on a questionnaire and scenario analysis. Due to the individual character of each of the cities, scenarios were developed for Katowice, being the main economic center of Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis. As a result of the research, factors have been identified that must be included in a strategy of a city that strives for sustainable development. The last stage of the research focused on the initial concept of the multimodal transport development impact assessment on sustainable development of the cities. Conclusions developed at individual stages allowed for answering the research questions.

Railway systems are now facing an increasing number of threats such as aging infrastructures and climate changes. The identification of critical network sections provides infrastructure managers with the ability to understand the impact of a disruption and creates a suitable preventive strategy to counter such threats. To this end, various vulnerability analysis methods have been proposed for railway networks. Two main types of methods, network topological analysis and network flow-based analysis, have been developed. Both approaches are constructed based on macroscopic models, which take only some railway properties such as network structure, train and passenger flow into account. Thus, the results obtained are high level approximations. This study proposes a new analysis method, which is developed based on the stochastic-microscopic railway network simulation model. The method can be applied to identify the critical sections of a railway network. The effect of impact levels and occurrence times of a disruption on the network section criticality is presented. An application of the proposed model is demonstrated using the Liverpool railway network in the UK.

This paper examines the legislative recruitment of women from conservative Islamist parties. It questions the common assumption that generally all Islamist parties are equally hostile to political participation and representation of women. For this purpose, two of the electorally most successful Islamist groups in the MENA region are compared, namely the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and its Moroccan offshoot, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD). The article seeks an explanation for diverging trends in female candidacy between these conservative religious movements, using the traditional supply and demand model of candidate selection. It argues that the less centralized and the more institutionalized parties (as is the case with the PJD) seem to be better equipped to facilitate women’s candidacy than the more oligarchic ones (the MB). In order to fully grasp the reasons behind the diverging trends in the nomination of female candidates from both Islamist parties, cultural factors are scrutinized as well. The article highlights the limits of the supply and demand model of candidate selection, which cannot explain instances of unexpected change in recruitment strategies based on external interference. Furthermore, it does not provide us the means to assess the impact of individual candidates’ ‘feminist credentials’ on overall female representation.

The article analyzes the experience of tariff regulation of the cost of passenger railway transportation services in the European Union and the Russian Federation. The features of tariff regulation are disclosed and eleven countries are classified according to the main categories. Tariff policy for transport services is used to ensure the consistency of economic interests of consumers and is a problematic segment for all types of transport. The article deals with tariff regulation of the cost of services provided by the railway infrastructure. Comparison of domestic and foreign experience in pricing of transport services for further development of Russian Railways is carried out. The setting of tariffs and available discounts, as well as benefits for the purchase of tickets for trains in the countries of the European Union and Russia are considered. The indexation of tariffs for transportation services of Russian Railways depending on the period of the trip and the comfort of the car is analyzed. Conclusions on the impact of mobile tariffs on economic efficiency, as well as the need to improve the tariff policy in the Russian Federation by involving foreign transport companies in implementation.
