Strategy is the main source of long-term growth for organizations, and if it is not successfully implemented, even if appropriate ones are adopted, the process is futile. The balanced scorecard which focuses on four aspects such as growth and learning, internal processes, customer, and financial is considered as a comprehensive framework for assessing performance and the progress of the strategy. Moreover, the data envelopment analysis is one of the best mathematical methods to compute the efficiency of organizations. The combination of these two techniques is a significant quantitative measurement with respect to the organization’s performance. However, in the real world, determinate and indeterminate information exists. Henceforth, the indeterminate issues are inescapable and must be considered in the performance evaluation. Neutrosophic number is a helpful tool for dealing with information that is indeterminate and incomplete. In this paper, we propose a new model of data envelopment analysis in the neutrosophic number environment. Furthermore, we attempt to combine the new model with the balanced scorecard to rank different decision-making units. Finally, the proposed method is illustrated by an empirical study involving 20 banking branches. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method and indicate that the model has practical outcomes for decision-makers.

The objective of this chapter is to propose a new approach for evaluating Research and Development (R&D) projects at different stages of their life cycle. The approach is based on the integration of the balanced scorecard, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and Multiple Objective (MO) linear programming. An interactive MO-DEA model is presented to incorporate Decision Maker's (DM) preference to effectively establish a common basis for fully ranking projects. The approach is illustrated on 50 R&D projects from the literature to highlight the effectiveness of the approach to fully rank all competing projects, hence increasing the discrimination power of DEA approach.

AbstractBackground: Starting from the limitations of different single-method approaches to measuring the organizational efficiency, the paper is focused on covering both the financial and non-financial factors of this concept by combining two methods, namely the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).Objectives: The main goal of the research in the paper is to show that certain deficiencies in the independent application of each method are eliminated by combining these methods.Methods/Approach: The paper combines two methods, BSC and DEA, to measure the relative efficiency of all branches of a bank in Serbia.Results: Results confirmed that the combined use of the named methods facilitates measurement of organizational efficiency by using both financial and non-financial indicators.Conclusions: The paper shows that it is possible to achieve synergetic effects in the evaluation of organizational efficiency in the banking sector if BSC is applied first, to define goals within four perspectives, and then four DEA models are developed to measure efficiency in each perspective.

<p>The Balanced Scorecard framework (BSC) developed by Kaplan and Norton (1992) has been widely accepted by most academics and adopted by numerous practitioners in industry. Despite being widely accepted by practitioners in industry, little extant research has focused on the BSC and little empirical analysis has focused on validating the model. This paper first develops performance measures specifically designed for the eCommerce industry by drawing on the BSC and other measures developed by practitioners. Next, the paper reports evidence of the utility of the BSC framework in measuring and monitoring the performance of e-commerce companies. The study utilizes an integrated Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model to examine and evaluate the relative efficiency of the measures identified within the BSC framework for measuring the performance of eCommerce companies. Finally, the study examines the effectiveness of the BSC framework in predicting the success or failure of eCommerce companies by focusing on three successful eCommerce and three eCommerce companies that subsequently failed.</p>

In the industrial economy, evaluating company performance based on financial results was good enough. However, in the current globalized and highly competitive environment, maintaining long term competitiveness requires companies to engage in overall strategic planning and performance evaluation. The balanced scorecard is a tool or method for balancing an organization's performance and can react to situations where a company's direction becomes disoriented. This approach assists in strategy planning, process management, and performance evaluation from four perspectives, including financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth. Good strategy planning provides companies with a correct management direction, correct process management ensures the efficient execution of plans, and correct performance evaluation illustrates the execution results. This study mainly focuses on how a large rubber company in Taiwan utilizes the balanced scorecard in its organization. As the technical perspective is important in the rubber keypad industry, besides the four above perspectives, this company has added the technical perspective. By introducing this company and its progress in implementing the balanced scorecard, this study hopes to provide other companies, especially rubber companies, with a planning direction and reference for the future implementation of the balanced scorecard.

Abstract DEA (data envelopment analysis) models can be divided into two groups: Radial DEA and non-radial DEA, and the latter has higher discriminatory power than the former. The range adjusted measure (RAM) is an effective and widely used non-radial DEA approach. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no literature on the integer-valued super-efficiency RAM-DEA model, especially when undesirable outputs are included. We first propose an integer-valued RAM-DEA model with undesirable outputs and then extend this model to an integer-valued super-efficiency RAM-DEA model with undesirable outputs. Compared with other DEA models, the two novel models have many advantages: 1) They are non-oriented and non-radial DEA models, which enable decision makers to simultaneously and non-proportionally improve inputs and outputs; 2) They can handle integer-valued variables and undesirable outputs, so the results obtained are more reliable; 3) The results can be easily obtained as it is based on linear programming; 4) The integer-valued super-efficiency RAM-DEA model with undesirable outputs can be used to accurately rank efficient DMUs. The proposed models are applied to evaluate the efficiency of China’s regional transportation systems (RTSs) considering the number of transport accidents (an undesirable output). The results help decision makers improve the performance of inefficient RTSs and analyze the strengths of efficient RTSs.

PurposeThis paper examines the roles of the balanced scorecard (BSC) in a long-term perspective and with a large deployment along numerous hierarchical levels. For this purpose, we use a longitudinal analysis of an implementation in a mutual insurance company.Design/methodology/approachWe combine actor–network theory (ANT) with interventionist research (IVR) to analyze the interrelation between human and non-human actors. Our study is based on various materials like interviews, meeting reports, graphs and so on.FindingsThe BSC is considered as a non-human actor which influences the human actors and provides specific benefits from a long-term use, due to various roles played by this tool (a mediator role, completed by a role of translator and revealer).Research limitations/implicationsResearch based on larger cross-sectional studies are necessary to more deeply validate our results based on a single case study.Practical implicationsThis paper gives some insights on processes and on actors an organization can mobilize to maintain the benefits provided by a large BSC use in the long run.Originality/valueIn line with the ANT concepts, our main contribution is to explain the outcomes of an innovation in management accounting by the consequences of adaptation mechanisms grounded on actors, translations, alliances and trials of strength.
