Gently inclined medium-thick orebodies are generally recognized as the most difficult type of orebody to mine, using current available strategies (i.e., the room and pillar method). In the present study, a similar physical model was used to investigate the roof stress and subsidence for mining gently inclined medium-thick phosphate rock from the Jinning Phosphate Mine, Yunnan Province, China. The stress field, displacement field, and roof failure evolution characteristics of the surrounding rock with stope structures of 3 m, 5 m, or 8 m ore pillars were considered. The results showed that, after mining stopped, obvious pressure relief areas formed above the three stope structures, and pressure-bearing areas formed at the front of the roof. With extending the mining in the working face, the stress relief boundary also gradually increased, and the top of the roof tended to sink with a maximum subsidence of –14.58 mm, –4.67 mm, and –3.48 mm. Due to the mining activity, the overlying strata bent and subsided from top to bottom, creating bending subsidence, fracture, and caving zones.

To control the roof during gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting in inclined coal seams, the retained gob-side roadway is zoned based on the mechanical principle and technological process of no-pillar mining with gob-entry retention. A simplified mechanical model for surrounding rocks in different subzones was established by using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to attain the demand for the support resistance and deformation of the roof in different subzones. According to load and deformation characteristics of the roof and mechanical characteristics of NPR cables, single props, and a sliding-type gangue-retaining structure formed by U-shaped steel inserts, the supporting systems for roadways in different subzones and the constitutive model thereof were established. On this basis, the action of the supporting system was analysed and a field test was performed. The results show that the supporting system undergoes three stages of behaviour, i.e., pressure growth, yielding under constant pressure, and stabilisation during whole entry retention. It can guarantee the collaborative deformation of the supporting systems with the roof on the premise of constant support resistance, thus satisfying the requirement for roadway protection. The roadway 150 m back from the working face is stable, and the final convergence between the roof and floor of the retained entry is 257 mm, showing a favourable entry-retention effect.

Abstract. Coal mines in the western areas of China experience low mining rates and induce many geohazards when using the room and pillar mining method. In this research, we proposed a roadway backfill method during longwall mining to target these problems. We tested the mechanical properties of the backfill materials to determine a reasonable ratio of backfill materials for the driving roadway during longwall mining. We also introduced the roadway layout and the backfill mining technique required for this method. Based on the effects of the abutment stress from a single roadway driving task, we designed the distance between roadways and a driving and filling sequence for multiple-roadway driving. By doing so, we found the movement characteristics of the strata with quadratic stabilization for backfill mining during roadway driving. Based on this research, the driving and filling sequence of the 3101 working face in Changxing coal mine was optimized to avoid the superimposed influence of mining-induced stress. According to the analysis of the surface monitoring data, the accumulated maximum subsidence is 15 mm and the maximum horizontal deformation is 0.8 mm m−1, which indicated that the ground basically had no obvious deformation after the implementation of the roadway backfill method at 3101 working face.

By making full use of the advantages of strip mining method and full-pillar mining method, the wide strip and full-pillar mining method can achieve the aim of mining under villages. However, at the full-pillar mining stage, the difficulty in managing several workfaces which are at work at the same time still exists. To improve the wide strip and full-pillar mining method’s applicability, an optimization of extraction sequence for coal pillars instead of the multi-working-face is put forward at the stage of full-pillar mining, and in the case of the deformation limit of surface structures is satisfied, to extract all the coal pillars which are under villages. By specific analysis of the extraction sequence optimization of the coal pillars in No.1 mine under Qian Xudapo village which belongs to Chang Chun coal Co., LTD., a better result is got which also acts a technological reference for the extraction under villages.

Ultra-thick hard sandstone roofs present high thickness, poor delamination, and wide caving range. The strata pressure of the working face during actual mining increases, having a significant influence on the safe mining of the working face. Especially, in the mining areas of western China, the fully mechanized mining faces with high mining height and high-strength mining are more prominent. Understanding the fractures and stress evolution characteristics of the ultra-thick hard sandstone roof during actual mining is of high significance to control the dynamic pressure on the working face. In this paper, the typical ultra-thick hard sandstone roof of the Xiaojihan coal mine was taken as an example. The structural and chemical composition characteristics were analyzed. Besides, the fracture characteristics of ultra-thick hard roof during the working face mining were analyzed. Moreover, the fracture structure consistency was verified through physical simulation and a field measurement method. Finally, the stress evolution laws in the ultra-thick hard sandstone roof fracture were studied through numerical simulation. The findings demonstrated that (1) the ultra-thick hard sandstone roof was composed of inlaid coarse minerals, which had compact structure, while the Protodyakonov hardness reached up to 3.07; (2) under the high-strength mining condition of fully mechanized mining face with large mining height, the ultra-thick hard sandstone roof had the characteristics of brittle fracture, with a caving span of 12 m; (3) under the high-strength mining condition of fully mechanized mining face with large mining height, the ultra-thick hard sandstone roof followed the stress evolution laws that were more sensitive to the neighboring goaf. Therefore, it was necessary to reduce the fracture span or layering of ultra-thick hard sandstone roof through the manual intervention method adoption or increase either the strength of coal pillar or supporting body, to resist the impact generated during ultra-thick hard sandstone roof fracture.

In order to solve the problems of the high cost and time consumption of half coal rock entry driving, low coal recovery rate, and stress concentration on filling support body of retained entry along gob, the innovative 110 mining method based on pressure relief by roof cutting was adopted in 6302 thin coal seam working face of Baoshan Coal Mine. First the technical principle and key technology of this mining method was presented. Then, through theoretical analysis and calculation, engineering experience, and field test, the key parameters such as the length of constant resistance anchor cable, the cutting angle and height of presplitting blasting, the charge structure, and the blocking-gangue support structure were determined and conducted in the retained entry. The broken expanded coefficient varying law of caved gangue with time and space was obtained, which revealed roof movement characteristic. The displacement monitoring curve of the roof and floor indicated that the maximum subsidence of the roof was about 150 mm and the maximum amount of floor heaving was 100 mm, which were quite small. The field monitoring data indicated that the entry retaining effect is good, which indicated that the innovative 110 mining method can be an effective way for reducing the high cost and time consumption of half coal rock entry driving, enhancing the coal recovery rate and preventing the dynamic mine pressure disasters.
