With the increasing development of our country and the world, the importance of English as an international language is self-evident. But we have difficulty in English translation, especially the vocabulary and translation of business English letters, not only because we have different living habits but also because we have different ways of speaking. Based on the research of functional equivalence theory and the calculation of a genetic algorithm, the vocabulary and translation of business English letters will be better improved. This can help us communicate better with each other and learn from the advanced Western experience in China. Through the study of the algorithm, the computational advantages of the algorithm are proved. The study of this English translation model will further improve the progress and promotion of existing translation technology.

In recent years, most of the communication places are using business English manual simultaneous interpretation or electronic equipment translation. In the context of diverse cultures, the way English is used and its grammar vary from country to country. In the face of this situation, how to optimize business English translation technology and improve the accuracy of business communication content is one of the research contents of scholars all over the world. This paper first introduces the purpose of business English translation and the gap between business English translation and general English translation. Secondly, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the structure of the BP neural network, and the combination of the two improves the ability of translation search. This paper compares the influence of the traditional BP algorithm and the BP algorithm optimized by genetic algorithm on the construction of a business English translation model. The results show that BP neural network optimized by the genetic algorithm can improve the speed of business English text translation, reduce the impact of semantic errors on the accuracy of the translation model, and improve the efficiency of translation.

The “functional equivalence” advanced by the famous American translation theorist, Eugene Nida has been widely used by various translators and has had a profound impact on China’s translation field. The application of functional equivalence theory to business English E-C(English-to-Chinese) translation is of great significance to the future translation of business English. Based on that, this thesis studies how the functional equivalence theory is applied to business English E-C translation from the view of equivalence of semantic message, equivalence of stylistic message and equivalence of cultural message with the practice of E-C translation effectively in order to ensure the accessibility and efficient communication of international business activities.

This paper adopts Nida's Functional Equivalence theory and studies the Chinese-English subtitle translation of the documentary China’s Fight against Covid-19, which was filmed and broadcast throughout China amid the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the year 2020, and it received positive responses in the country. The research objective is to find out the translation strategies, methods and skills involved in achieving the “most natural” and the “most closest” English expressions to the Chinese source text. In the study, investigations on the equivalence of Lexical level, Syntactical level, Contextual level and Textual level in the subtitle are conducted respectively, and the aforementioned translation aspects are discussed under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence. The key findings are that the translated texts adopt literal and liberal translation to deal with the Culture-loaded words and four-character idioms on a lexical level. While sentence restructuring, conversion of voice, and conjunction and present particle are used on the syntactic level to make source language and translated subtitle more coherent and authentic. On the contextual and textual level, the target text distinguishes the formal and informal languages through the sentence length and the complexity of the structure. This study offers a practical implication for translating Chinese pandemic discourses into English, and it can also shed light on the study of Chinese narratives during the COVID outbreak and the publicity of the Chinese countermeasures.
