Academic study writers utilize a specific set of discursive resources backed up by both cultural and professional norms to be endorsed by the intended audience. The current study aimed to investigate if there were any significant differences between English and Persian academic research articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of nutrition in light of appraisal theory. To this end, a corpus of 40 English and 40 Persian academic research articles was analyzed in terms of three categories and subcategories of appraisal theory. The results revealed that the authors of both English and Persian research articles included more attitude resources followed by graduation and engagement resources. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed between these two sets of articles in terms of three major appraisal categories. The findings carry pedagogical implications for English for academic purposes courses to provide the academic discourse communities with the required discursive competencies.

English for foreign language (EFL) novice writer-researchers are faced with an increasing pressure for international publication as a prerequisite for sustainable career development in academia. The use of metadiscourse, as a key indicator for their discourse competence, has been a subject of research for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and/or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) scholars. This study investigates metadiscourse features of research articles’ (RA) results and discussion (R&D) sections written by Chinese PhD students and their writer identities reflected through metadiscourse choice. A corpus was built, consisting of a subcorpus of R&D of unpublished research articles (RAs) written by Chinese PhD students (CNWs) and one of the same part-genre by English-speaking expert writers (EEWs). Metadiscourse used by the two groups were identified based on Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse. Quantitative analyses on the frequency and variety of metadiscourse markers found a significant difference not only in interactional metadiscourse but also in some subcategories of interactive and interactional metadiscourse, indicating that CNWs attach more importance to organisation of ideas than to the persuasiveness of arguments. A questionnaire survey was conducted to explore the influence of the CNWs’ perception of RA writing on their metadiscourse choice. It revealed that knowledge of generic conventions and metadiscourse functions, awareness of the writer–reader relationship, and confidence in language competence may influence metadiscourse choice. The paper concludes with the view that the CNWs generally view themselves as a recounter and reporter of their research, remaining conservative when presenting an authoritative voice and a confident identity as a knowledge creator.

Abstract Research articles have begun to occupy the status of a prominent academic genre, as publishing one is a significant way to gain credibility and to establish oneself as a researcher among members of a discourse community. One way to distinguish discourse communities is to look at the linguistic features used in the generic structure of their research articles. One of these linguistic features is metadiscourse which deals with the connection between authors, texts and readers. The present study adopted Hyland’s (2005a) model of metadiscourse to compare the use of interactional markers in the moves of 40 research article introductions from Applied Linguistics and Chemistry. Findings indicated some variations in the way that disciplinary authors employed interactional devices in introduction moves. These findings can be discussed in terms of familiarizing novice writers with discipline-specific features of their research article introduction and interpersonality in establishing a link between a text and readers.

The discourse approach for analysing various specified genres and professional discourse communities has increased in recent decades. Globalisation and synergy of disciplines opened up space for the interdisciplinary studies. The analysis of the specialized discourses enables to reveal the peculiarities and dominant concepts of the professional fields. With this in mind, this paper aims to examine the features of discourse employed in the research articles and publications about transport and logistics. The paper analyses the structural and qualitative aspect of the discourse of logistics and transportation. Based on the move/steps model, the main components of the research article in this discourse domain are found. Then, the analysis is focused on the discourse indicators that differ logistics and transportation genres from other academic genres. The changes in the scope and interest domain of logistics are worth“tracking and tracing” from a discursive aspect. The research is carried out on the material compiled of the academic research articles on logistics and transportation, referential resources in the field, and logistic dictionaries. The analysis shows that changes in logistics and transportation correlate with discourse changes. On a diachronic level, many concepts are replaced by new ones containing new approaches and dimensions in logistics. The analysis conducted in this paper brings new insight to both disciplines, logistics and linguistics.

Research article (RA) abstracts play a pivotal role in settling the fate of the academic papers. Despite the abundance of research on investigating the generic structure of this academic genre, the variations in its move patterns between the two venues within a single area of research seem to have remained untouched. The current study attempted to explore the constituent moves and move patterns of RA abstracts published in a local (Iranian Journal of English for Academic Purposes) and an international (The Journal of English for Academic Purposes) journal in the field of applied linguistics. Drawing on Hyland’s (2000) five-move model, the RA abstracts were analyzed. The results indicated that the abstracts published in the two journals included the conventional moves. Furthermore, the most frequent moves were the purpose, method, and product in the two corpora. Moreover, although the results of the chi-square test pointed to no significant difference in terms of the frequency of the moves in the abstracts, the analysis divulged variations in the move patterns across the two sets of articles. The findings carry pedagogical implications for the academic writing course designers, materials developers, and instructors to enhance the novice researchers’ familiarity with the writing conventions to facilitate their accommodation by the scientific communities.

Objective - Conferences are essential opportunities for professional development and for learning about research. This study analyses papers presented in the Research Forum track of the International Association of School Librarians (IASL) conferences to determine whether the amount of school library research reporting increased or decreased over time; who (i.e., what author roles and affiliations) has written about research; which countries were represented in the research articles; what topics were discussed in research articles; and what research methodologies were used. The aim was to determine the extent to which the Research Forum provides research evidence that relates to practice. Methods - This study continues the longitudinal analysis of published school library research begun by Clyde (1996) by analyzing Research Forum papers published in IASL conference proceedings from 1998-2009 and using the same approaches and metrics as previous studies by Clyde (e.g., 1996; 2002; 2004), Clyde and Oberg (2004), and Oberg (2006). Results - Conference paper topics, author origins, quantities, and research approaches remained static through the 11 years analyzed. The analysis reveals that the papers’ authors, methods, and topics reflected those found in previous studies of school library research. As well as replicating previous studies, the role of academic research at a practitioner-based conference was investigated. Conclusions - Based on long-established imperatives from leaders in the profession, the IASL conferences provide both evidence and evidence -based practice for school librarians from all over the world. However, when scholarly research is shared at practitioner venues, it is possible that school librarians may assume that research results constitute evidence -based practice (EBP), not evidence upon which practice should be based. This distinction is important if considering that the purpose of academic research is to objectively inform, not to advocate a particular position or practice. The Research Forum can be a valuable venue for the presentation of empirical research findings and conclusions and objective program evaluations and provide a valuable complement to the evidence -based practice descriptions shared in the Professional Papers portion of the conference program. It is argued that the Research Forum must be clear in its purpose: to present the results of research; to present effective practice determined by rigorous evaluation; or to present research-supported arguments for the support of school libraries. Through a reconceptualization of EBP, the paper demonstrates how EBP is both a method and a methodology for the presentation of school library research and practice in a conference atmosphere.

Journal clubs are closely interlinked with evidence based practice. At Faculty of Social and Health Sciences at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences our students are required to write literature reviews for their bachelor degree, and there is an increasing need for guiding the students into academic methodology through critically assessing research articles.  The purposes of starting journal clubs at our faculty is to guide the students into the academic genre, to help them gain confidence in reading research articles, and to broaden the perspective between theory and practice. Better semester grade is a secondary goal to our aim as it probably is hard to operationalize. We wish to establish a cooperation with the faculty staff, especially the ones involved in teaching evidence based practice.  Wilson & Deighton (2016) describes that students find it difficult to approach research articles, and that journal clubs are suitable and an activating manner to introduce the students to the academic genre. Deenadayalan et al. (2008) comments that using case studies as a basis for academic discussion, fills the gap between theory and practical approach to the subject. There are several elements to pay attention to if the journal clubs are to become a success, and Deenadayalan et al. (2008) emphasizes among other things a clear purpose for the students' involvement, as well as leadership, insentives and preparedness. In our project dating, we wish to discuss the possibility to do pilots for nursing students either in the last semesters of their courses, or with master students. We are interested in previous experiences with nursing students, and we want to look into which factors that makes the clubs function and how our aim might be reached.

Introduction The literature suggests a widespread reduction in the availability and accessibility of newer treatment options among marginalized groups in AML. Studies from large national databases point to lower socio-economic status, Hispanic and African American race, Medicare or no insurance, being unmarried, treatment at non-academic centers, and rural residence as negatively impacting overall survival (OS) and rates of chemotherapy utilization in AML patients (Patel et al. 2015, Jaco et al. 2017, Bhatt et al. 2018, Master et al. 2016). We hypothesized that facility affiliation and pt volume would also have important effects on time to treatment (TTT) and OS in AML, even when these socioeconomic disparities were accounted for. Methods For this retrospective analysis, we used NCDB data that included 124,988 pts over the age of 18 with AML between the years 2004-2016. Variables analyzed included facility types described as community cancer programs (CP), comprehensive community cancer programs (CCP), academic/research center cancer programs (AC) and integrated network cancer programs (IN), and volume of facilities defined as high volume (HV) and low volume (LV). HV facilities had case volumes of ≥ 99th percentile and all other facilities were classified as LV. Multivariate analyses (MVA) included demographic and socioeconomic covariables. We used Cox proportional hazard analysis for both TTT and OS MVA. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate median TTT and OS, and the log rank test used to compare TTT and OS across predictor variables. Results The median age of AML patients was 63 yrs (range 18-90) with 54% males, and 86% Caucasian. Five percent of patients were treated at CP, 30% at CCP, 44% at AC, and 10% at IN. 21% at HV facilities and 79% at LV facilities. Median TTT in days at CP facilities was 7, compared to 5 days in CCP and AC facilities versus 4 days at IN (p<0.0001). TTT was 5 days at HV facilities versus 4 days at LV facilities (p<0.0001). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that TTT was similar between HV and LV facilities(figure 1). The median OS was 3.25 months in CP compared to 4.34 months at CCP, 5.06 months at IN and 9.53 months at AC (p<0.0001). For facility volume, the median OS was 13.11 months in HV facilities compared to 6.93 months in LV facilities (p<0.0001). When sex, race, age, Hispanic Origin, education, urban/rural residence, Charlson-Deyo Comorbidity score and Great Circle Distance were adjusted for in MVA (table 1), the OS was higher in AC versus CP facilities (hazard ratio [HR] of 0.90 (0.87-0.93, p<0.0001), and there was no statistically significant difference with comparison of other facility types to CP. Similarly, there was a lower OS at LV versus HV facilities with a HR of 1.14 (1.12-1.16, p<0.0001). CCP facilities had a shorter TTT compared to CP with a HR of 1.21 (1.17-1.26, p<0.0001). AC had a shorter TTT than CP with a HR of 1.17 (1.13-1.22, p<0.0001), and IN had a shorter TTT compared to CP with a HR of 1.29 (1.24-1.34, p<0.0001). Additionally, TTT in the MVA for facility volume was shorter in LV facilities compared to HV facilities with HR of 1.05 (1.04-1.07, p<0.0001) [table 1]. Conclusion When adjusting for various socioeconomic factors, we found that TTT was longest in CP compared to CCP, AC, and IN. Treatment at a LV facility resulted in a decreased overall survival. LV facilities may be less familiar with treatment regimens for AML, less likely to use novel treatment options, and be less familiar with the disease. We showed that treatment at an AC compared to CP, CCP and IN facilities improved survival. Given poor outcomes for AML, these results show the importance of going to AC and HV facilities with more experience in treating AML for improved outcomes. Public accounting firms and other independent assurance providers have developed and marketed web assurance services resulting in a seal as an indicator of compliance. Academic research finds that seals potentially meet some of the most acute consumer concerns, but that consumers have inadequate understandings about the seals, and low regard for them. This study extends the research on the role of information assurance seals as an antecedent of trust by examining the use of seals on the eBay auction site. The study analyzes a sample of transactions in which buyers acted with their own money, and had time to learn about various signals and consider their strengths. The transactions are examined to see whether presence of a seal on the seller's web page made a significant difference on actual consumer purchasing behavior. Empirical tests found significant associations between the presence of seals and consumer purchasing behavior in both auction and posted-price contexts.
