We investigated fruit physical traits and nutritional value in both seed and flesh in eight Moroccan date palm varieties. The greatest values of weight for whole fruit, flesh, seed, and flesh percentage were found in “Boufgous,” “Agondari,” and “Bouskri.” These two later varieties displayed also their superiority with respect to proximate composition. For fruit flesh, proximate composition, energy value, and reducing capacity ranged as follows: proteins (1.60–3.53%), moisture (5.31–17.31%), ash (2.08–2.50%), lipids (0.32–1.09%), carbohydrates (76.69–90.18%), energy value (338.30–385.89 kcal/100 g), and reducing capacity (100.14–1607.12 mg GAE/100 g). Corresponding values in seeds were as follows: proteins (3.20–5.00%), moisture (1.42–4.14%), ash (1.14–1.50%), lipids (6.30–7.40%), carbohydrates (83.39–85.55%), energy value (417.06–429.51 kcal/100 g), and reducing capacity (1427.71–6843.84 mg GAE/100 g dry weight). Among all minerals (K, Ca, Mg, B, Fe, Cu, Mn, Na, and Zn) found in both fruit parts, K had the highest records for both flesh (12047 mg/kg) and seed (6127.6 mg/kg), followed by Mg and Ca. Seeds lipidic fraction was dominated by monounsaturated fatty acid C18 : 1 (47.5%), followed by saturated fatty acids mostly C12 : 0 (18.0%), C14 : 0 (10.5%), and C16 : 0 (10.6%) and finally polyunsaturated fatty acid C18 : 2 (8.8%). It could be concluded that investigated varieties presented a great importance from a nutritional point of view, and seeds could present important opportunities of valorization.

Dikiri, an abnormal type of coconut found mainly in the southern part of Sri Lanka, was analyzed for its proximate composition, dietary fiber, minerals, vitamin C and fatty acid profile. Pectin was isolated and characterized (moisture, ash, acetyl value, methoxyl value, equivalent value) from dikiri coconut. Dikiri coconut contains 38.91± 0.9%, 2.95 ± 0.2%, 58.21± 3.6%, 17.62 ± 0.2%, 6.63 ± 0.3% and14.59% dry matter, ash, crude fat, crude fibre and carbohydrate respectively. The main dietary fiber components of Dikiri coconut were pectin and hemicellulose while that of normal coconut was cellulose. Lignin content was significantly lower in the kernel of dikiri coconut(3.98±0.9) than normal coconut kernel(6.14±0.7%). Equivalent weight, methoxyl value, moisture, ash and acetyl value of dikiri pectin were 1052.7 ± 11.08, 8.72 ± 0.25, 85.8 ±1.65, 0.8 ± 0.04 and 0.09 ± 0.01 respectively. The main mineral found in dikiri was potassium. Vitamin C content of dikiri coconut was 2.32 mg/100g. The fatty acids composition of dikiri was similar to normal coconut and saturated fatty acids constituted nearly 90% of total fatty acids and lauric acid is the main fatty acid followed by myristic acid.

Fish with higher nutrient qualities can be used to solve malnutrition problems in Africa. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of local smoking on proximate composition and lipid oxidation of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus collected in Cameroon. The proximate composition was assessed using standard methods while lipid quality assessment was based on the determination of biochemical indexes. A change on fatty acid composition was evaluated by gas chromatography while minerals composition was evaluated by spectrophotometer. On nutritional point of view, raw fish have high protein, lipid and ash contents (51.87, 37.48 and 8.55 g/100 g dry weight respectively). Unsaturated fatty acid may be up to 57% of the total fatty acids. Raw C. nigrodigitatus contain reasonable amount of minerals. Smoking process increased ash and lipid content while proteins and moisture contents are reduced in these fish. The iodine value of C. nigrodigitatus was reduced while acid, peroxide and TOTOX values increased during smoking. The marked decrease of polyunsaturated fatty acids was noted during processing. Mineral contents were affected by smoking process. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, manganese and iron contents increased significantly. In conclusion, hot smoking enhances nutrients content of C. nigrodigitatus while significant reduction in lipid quality was recorded.Keywords: Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, smoking process, nutritional value, lipid oxidation, mineral contents. Les méthodes standards ont été utilisées pour la détermination de la composition chimique, la mesure de l’état d’oxydation des lipides par des indices chimiques, la composition en acides gras par chromatographie en phase gazeuse et les minéraux par spectrophotométrie. Du point de vue nutritionnel, ce poisson frais contient respectivement 51,87 ; 37,48 and 8,55 g/100 g de matière sèches de protéines, lipides et cendres. Il contient également 57% d’acides gras insaturés et une quantité raisonnable de minéraux. Le traitement de fumage provoque une augmentation de la teneur en cendres et en lipides. Par contre la teneur en eau et en protéines diminuent. L’indice d’iode baisse tandis que les indices d’acide, de peroxyde et de TBARs augmentent. Une diminution du taux d’acides gras polyinsaturés est observée. Les minéraux sont également affectés au cours du fumage. Le traitement de fumage améliore la teneur en nutriments de C. nigrodigitatus, par contre réduit la qualité lipidique de celui-ci. The nutritional effects of marine food have increased far and wide due to the beneficial effects of consuming marine food, fats and oils. In general, the proximate composition is well known as a proportion composition of basic elements such as protein, lipids, carbohydrate, minerals and water. The puffer fish Lagocephalus lunaris and Lagocephalus inermis were collected at Mudasal odai fish landing centre and the skin and visceral organs like gonads and intestines were removed the edible portion only took for the analysis. Species of the fish sample was oven-dried in an electric oven at between 70 – 80 °C until the samples had constant weight. The protein, carbohydrate, fat, ash and moisture content of green -rough-back puffer fish and smooth-backed blow fish were investigated. L. lunaris and L. inermis were has 9.22 %, 8.92 %, 1.96 %, 1.87 %, 11.25 %, 11.98 %, 80.32 %, 86.05 %, 0.96 %, 1.27 % respectively. Totally seven saturated fatty acids; ten Mono unsaturated fatty acids and two poly unsaturated fatty acids were found as the major components on the investigated puffer fish. Polyunsaturated fatty acid like n-3 has 31.17 %, 31.19 and n-6 7.26 %, 7.29 % of PUSFA found as the dominant composition on puffer fish. This study revealed that these species are having high saturated fatty acid and protein content and able to compete with more commercially utilize species in terms of nutritional value, and they can definitely also compete when it comes to taste. It can act as a good source of nutritional and economic value when it is carefully handled and properly cooked.

Mangrove oysters, Crassostrea rhizophorae were collected at the mangrove of "Barra de Guaratiba" district, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the aim to determine the proximate composition and fatty acid content. Along the year seasons no statistical (P>0.05) difference was observed in the values of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash. They were 82.0%; 9.7%; 1.7%; 3.2%, in average, respectively. However, glycogen was significantly (P<0.05) higher in spring (4.4%) and winter (4.2%) samples, than in summer (2.7%) and autumn (2.9%), samples. Saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were respectively, the most important fatty acids in oysters, with the palmitic acid (16:0), being the major fatty acid. This study, demonstrated that this species was characterized by low fat content (< 2.0%) and also being a good source of eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3, DHA) fatty acids. Therefore, C. rhizophorae, in terms of lipid and fatty acids, could be recommended for human consumption.

Objective: Wild indigenous fruits are believed to be extremely nutritious, contributing a great deal to the general health of the tribal and rural population. To validate this claim, systematic studies are required to estimate their nutritional composition. The objective of the study was to analyze the fatty acid composition of Syzygium zeylanicum (L.) DC. var. zeylanicum.Methods: The fatty acid composition of S. zeylanicum var. zeylanicum fruits were analysed by GC-MS/MS.Results: The major fatty acids were cis-oleic acid (43.47±0.62 %) and linoleic acid (31.14±0.35%). Total monounsaturated fatty acids in the sample was 44.21%. Omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9 fatty acids were detected. The polyunsaturated fatty acids in thefruits were linoleic acid (31.14±0.35 %) and arachidonic acid (0.15±0.22 %), whereas 24.51 % of the total fatty acids were saturated. The ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids was approximately 3:1. The order of abundance of fatty acids, in some of the healthiest oils, viz. olive, canola, peanut oils is, Oleic acid>Linoleic acid>Palmitic acid>Stearic acid and the same order was observed in the present study.Conclusion: Fruits of S. zeylanicum var. zeylanicum too shows a healthy balance between unsaturated and saturated fats.

Cobia, Rachycentron canadum, is an important recreational marine fish of growing popularity in the aquaculture industry. Knowledge of the impact of environment on their fatty acids (FAs) utilization may contribute to the understanding their feeding in culture condition especially as cobia is been considered for low salinity culture. This study investigates the variations in the fatty acid contents of cobia from Dungun coast, Malaysia with respect to the changes in seasons and feeding intensity. Saturated fatty acids (FAs) comprised the majority of FAs in muscle, followed by monoenes, total poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (n-3) and then total PUFAs (n-6) with no seasonal variation in the quantity. A similar trend was observed in liver but total saturated FAs was significantly higher during the inter-monsoon while total monoenes significantly accumulate during monsoon. During low feeding intensity, there was a significant accumulation of PUFAs (n-6) in the muscle tissue (P < 0.05). Gut content analyses showed that cobia significantly increased the consumption of mollusks during the inter-monsoon (P < 0.05), although bony fishes dominated their diet throughout the year with no significant seasonal differences (P > 0.05). Our results suggest that cobia lipids are composed of a significant quantity of omega-3 and omega-6 FAs, which are considered to have important health benefits. While the environmental variability especially salinity fluctuations and prey abundance that accompany seasonal changes have a significant impact on the nutritional composition of cobia in Malaysian waters, their nutritional quality is maintained.

The need for more sustainable aquafeeds has prompted the exploration of insects as potential ingredients. However, commonly reared insects are not satisfactory regarding their fatty acid composition, lacking omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC PUFA), important nutrients for marine organisms. In this study, we present in detail the fatty acid profile of the long-legged fly Machaerium maritimae Haliday (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), an amphibiotic insect native to European coastal habitats. Specimens of this fly were collected in Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal) and the fatty acid profile was analysed through gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Results revealed a remarkably high level of n-3 LC PUFA, (11 μg/mg dry weight, 20% of the fatty acid profile) namely eicosapentaenoic acid, and a low level of saturated fatty acids. This value is higher than what is found in Hermetia illucens (black soldier fly), while comparable to other aquatic insects. We also report the presence of 50 distinct fatty acids, including multiple branched-chain and PUFA, and discuss potential implications of their presence on the ecology of this species. Variation in the fatty acid profile along the landscape is also presented. Our results indicate that M. maritimae can potentially be a high-quality lipid source for marine aquafeeds. Current legislation in Europe allowing the use of insects in aquaculture is restricted to a few selected species, often non-native, however, further research should consider native insects as potential alternatives to current ingredients in aquafeed.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of pumpkin and flaxseed oils on the fatty acid profile and nutrient changes in table eggs. At 38 weeks of age, Lohmann Brown Lite hens were divided into three groups depending up the diet. The birds were housed in individual cages (6 hens per cage) with a space allowance of 943.2 cm2 per hen, and given diet standard complete feed mixture for laying hens. Hens from experimental groups were fed with complete feed mixtures supplemented by pumpkin (group E1) or flaxseed (group E2) oils at a dosage of 3%. The experiment lasted 52 days. In the last week of the trial, the eggs were collected for chemical analysis. Twelve eggs from each dietary treatment were randomly selected and analysed. Significant differences between control and group E1 in the content of crude protein (P < 0.05), between both experimental groups (E1 and E2) in the content of ash (P < 0.01) in yolk, and between control and the experimental groups in the content of dry matter (P < 0.05) in albumen were detected. Significant (P < 0.01) differences were found in contents of myristic, palmitic, heptadecanoic, oleic, linoleic, and cis-11,14-eicosadienoic acids between control and experimental groups E1 and E2. Compared to control, higher (P < 0.01) concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids, lower concentrations of saturated fatty acids and also lower contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the experimental groups were observed. The supplementation of flaxseed oil had a positive effect on the content of n-3 α-linolenic acid.

The total oil yield and the fatty acid composition were determined in theAnnona muricataL. fixed oil using organic solvent extraction and GC-FID. The seeds were found to contain about ~21.5% of crude fixed oil on a dry weight basis. The crude oil containing fatty acid was converted into methyl esters and analysed by GC-FID. Fourteen fatty acids were identified using GC-FID. The major monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids were oleic acid (39.2%) and palmitic acid (19.1–19.2%), respectively, whereas theα-linolenic acid (1.2%) and linoleic acid (34.9%) were polyunsaturated fatty acid. The other saturated acids were stearic acid (3.3%), arachidic acid (0.4%), myristic acid (0.1%), heptadecanoic acid (0.1%), behenic acid (0.1%), and lignoceric acid (0.1%). Some of the fatty acids have not been reported earlier from the oil ofAnnona muricataL. Fixed oil exhibited significant free radical scavenging activity which was measured using DPPH and is also known to inhibit the gastrointestinal motility significantly.
