Combined double thin-walled pier is a new kind of pier adopted in the urban transit system in China, whose longitudinal stiffness cannot be determined by adopting traditional methods. Aiming at this practical issue, this work proposed an alternative method for determining the longitudinal stiffness of the combined double thin-walled pier based on the train-track-bridge interaction. Primarily, the relationship between longitudinal stiffness of the pier and rail stress is underlined, based on which the proposed methodology is described in detail. Finally, a case study is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that the train-track-bridge dynamic interaction theory is effective in determining the longitudinal stiffness of the newly designed and special pier. Rail stress and longitudinal displacement of pier top exceed their limit values with the change of pier longitudinal stiffness. The dynamic stress and thermal stress of rail are the two most important indicators in determining pier longitudinal stiffness, which should be paid attention to in practical engineering.

In the framework of the largest urban-transit system ever built from scratch, the Riyadh Metro Project (6 lines totaling 176 km), a comprehensive investigation was carried out for karst detection, prevention and correction. This case study of the Metro Line 3 (41.6 km) seeks to show how the multi-technique geophysical survey (seismic refraction, electrical resistivity and ground penetration radar down to 40–50 m depth) was found to be a successful tool in detecting karst features. Preventive measures included systematic probing drilling to anticipate karst cavities below foundations (653 piers) and tunnel lining evaluation using 2D finite elements. Finally, this paper provides initial guidance of the corrective techniques used for each engineering challenge, such as cavity filling with grouting, geogrid reinforcement, etc.

The aim of this study is to investigate an novel mode of transportation from Sarkhej Circle Ahmedabad to Pathika Gandhinagar i.e. arterial road and how this system will be viable to four basic criteria: Technically, Economically, safety and Ecofriendly. This study gives modern concepts of a single rail serving as a track for passenger or freight vehicles, gives information about land use and public transportation planning, speed and movement. Monorail vehicles havebenefited from modern transit technology.The purpose of this Study is to investigate the viability of monorail as a new urban transit option along a corridor under study of section Sarkhej circle to Gandhinagar. The study is to determine that ―Monorail‖ a fixed guideway technology known ―Automated Guideway Transit‖ be a sustainable transport system which provide mobility and accessibility to all urban residents in a safe and environment friendly mode of transport. One alternative with the development of modern public transport system is monorail. A monorail as public transport very helpful for people in their daily activities also reduces the use of private vehicles and to reduce environmental pollution i.e. ecofriendly.

The article explores the political effects of popular consultations as a means of direct democracy in struggles over mining. Building on concepts from participatory and materialist democracy theory, it shows the transformative potentials of processes of direct democracy towards democratization and emancipation under, and beyond, capitalist and liberal democratic conditions. Empirically the analysis is based on a case study on the protests against the La Colosa gold mining project in Colombia. The analysis reveals that although processes of direct democracy in conflicts over mining cannot transform existing class inequalities and social power relations fundamentally, they can nevertheless alter elements thereof. These are for example the relationship between local and national governments, changes of the political agenda of mining and the opening of new spaces for political participation, where previously there were none. It is here where it’s emancipatory potential can be found.

This article tackles the relationship between Turkish-Belgian families with the Flemish society, within the specific context of their experiences with early childhood education and care (ECEC) system in Flanders. Our findings are based on a focus group with mothers in the town of Beringen. The intercultural dimension of the relationships between these families and ECEC services is discussed using the Interactive Acculturation Model (IAM). The acculturation patterns are discussed under three main headlines: language acquisition, social interaction and maternal employment. Within the context of IAM, our findings point to some degree of separationism of Turkish-Belgian families, while they perceive the Flemish majority to have an assimilationist attitude. This combination suggests a conflictual type of interaction. However, both parties also display some traits of integrationism, which points to the domain-specificity of interactive acculturation.

There are many factors that can lead to internship satisfaction. Working environment is one of the factors that will result to such outcome. However, many organizations discarded the fact of its importance. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between working environment and internship satisfaction level as well as to determine whether the dimensions of working environment significantly affect internship satisfaction. The said dimensions are, learning opportunities, supervisory support, career development opportunities, co-workers support, organization satisfaction, working hours and esteem needs. A total of 111 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and were processed by SPSS program to obtain the result of this study. The results reveal that learning opportunities, career development opportunities, organization satisfaction and esteem needs are factors that contribute to internship satisfaction level. In the other hand, supervisory support, co-workers support and working hours are factors that lead to internship dissatisfaction. The result also shows that organization satisfaction is the strongest factor that affects internship satisfaction while co-workers support is the weakest.
