Vietnamese Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) has long been recognized as one of the most valuable traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, adenosine was extracted from Vietnamese C. militaris by ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction method (UAEE) using water as a solvent. Then, the effects of five single factors on adenosine content including pH, enzyme-to-material ratio, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were determined. After that, three factors consisting of ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic temperature were chosen based on their effects on adenosine content. The simultaneous influence of these factors on the adenosine content was investigated by response surface method using central composite design. The adenosine content was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography method. Under the optimal conditions, the extract was evaluated for antioxidant and anticancer bioactivities. In addition, different extraction methods including aqueous extraction (AE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) methods were carried out to compare with UAEE. As a result, it can be concluded that UAEE is a promising method for adenosine extraction and further studies regarding isolation and purification need to be conducted.

Object. Ultrasound-assisted extraction of total flavonoids from corn silk and their antioxidant activities were studied.Methods. Response surface methodology was adopted to optimize the extraction conditions and antioxidant activities of the extracted total flavonoids were detected through ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay.Results. Through a three-level, three-variable Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM) adopting yield as response, the optimal conditions were determined as follows: ultrasonic power 500 W, extraction time 20 min, material solvent ratio 1 : 20, and ethanol concentration 30%. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction yield of total flavonoids was 1.13%. FRAP value of total flavonoids extracted from corn silk was 467.59 μmol/L.Conclusion. The total flavonoids of corn silk could be developed as food natural antioxidant reagents.

Angelica keiskei Koidzumi (A. keiskei), as a Japanese edible herbal plant, enjoys a variety of biological activities due to the presence of numerous active compounds, especially flavonoids. This study aims for the optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) for flavonoids in A. keiskei and their antioxidant activity by using the response surface methodology (RSM). Single-factor experiments and a four-factor three-level Box–Behnken design (BBD) were performed to explore the effects of the following parameters on flavonoid extraction and antioxidant activity evaluation: ultrasonic temperature (X1), ultrasonic time (X2), ethanol concentration (X3) and liquid–solid ratio (X4). The optimum conditions of the combination of total flavonoid content (TFC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity (DPPH-RSC) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were as follows: X1 = 80 °C, X2 = 4 min, X3 = 78%, X4 = 35 mL/g, respectively. The experimental results provide a theoretical basis for the extensive utilization of A. keiskei and flavonoids extraction from A. keiskei as a potential source of antioxidants.

The purpose of this study was to select the optimum ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions for the extraction of polysaccharides from Pleurotus eryngii (DC. ex Fr.) Que (P. eryngii ). The main factors that affect the extraction yield of polysaccharides such as solid:liquid ratio, ultrasonic power, extraction time and extraction temperature were studied individually. An orthogonal experiment was designed to optimize the extraction parameters. It was found that UAE method was a reliable, simple and effective method for fast extraction of polysaccharides from P. eryngii. The optimum UAE conditions were as followings: Solid:liquid ratio of 1:35, Ultrasonic power of 55 W, Extraction time of 30 min and extraction temperature of 45°C.

Camellia oil is the main component of the camellia seed and has many beneficial functions to human health. An investigation into ultrasound- assisted extraction was conducted for the oil extraction from camellia seed. The optimized condition of extraction parameters obtained with the response surface methodology (RSM) at a four-variable, three-level experiment Box–Behnken design (BBD), was as follows: liquid-solid ratio, 5mL/g;ultrasonic power,155W;ultrasonic treatment time,31 min; and ultrasonic treatment temperature, 55°C, under these conditions, the oil yeild was 44.55%. GC–MS analysis showed that the content of unsaturated fatty acid in camellia oil was up to 84.47% and the content of oleic acid was over 76.15%.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds fromInula heleniumwas studied. Effects of ethanol concentration, ultrasonic time, solid-liquid ratio, and number of extractions were investigated. An orthogonal array was constructed to optimize UAE process. The optimized extraction conditions were as follows: ethanol concentration, 30%; solid-liquid ratio, 1 : 20; number of extractions, 2 times; extraction time, 30 min. Under the optimal conditions, the yield of total phenolic compounds and chlorogenic acid was6.13±0.58and1.32±0.17 mg/g, respectively. The results showed that high amounts of phenolic compounds can be extracted fromI. heleniumby ultrasound-assisted extraction technology.

Jizi439, a newly developed black wheat breeding line, was reported to effectively regulate blood glucose, which may potentially be associated with its intrinsic high level of phenolic compounds (PCs). To maximize the PCs yield and thereby enhance their antioxidant activity, orthogonal experiments were designed in sequence for extrusion of Jizi439 black wheat bran (BWB) powder and followed by the extraction of PCs assisted with ultrasound technique. White wheat bran was used as a control. The optimum condition for extrusion was 110 °C, 25% feed water content, 140 rpm screw speed; meanwhile, 50 °C, 40 min, 35 kHz ultrasonic frequency, 300 W ultrasonic power for ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). Total phenolic content (TPC) as determined by Folin–Ciocalteu method was 2856.3 ± 57.7 μg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) per gram of dry weight (DW) of phenolic extract; meanwhile, antioxidant activity (AA) in terms of DPPH radical scavenging ratio was 85.5% ± 1.1% under optimized conditions, which were both significantly higher than the control. Phenolic acids except for gallic acid, as well as flavonoids, including luteolin and apigenin were increased by extrusion and ultrasound, as suggested by HPLC results. In conclusion, our study would provide a valuable reference for processing Jizi439 BWB before making or commercially utilize it into health-related food products.

Ceratophyllum demersum L. (CDL) is a traditional Chinese herb to treat many diseases, but research on its anti-diabetic activity is not available. In this research, the α-glucosidase inhibitory ability and phytochemical constituents of CDL extract were firstly studied. Optimal ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions for α-glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) were optimized by single factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM), which was confirmed as 70% methanol, liquid-to-solid ratio of 43 (mL/g), extraction time of 54 min, ultrasonic power of 350 W, and extraction temperature of 40 °C. The lowest IC50 value for α-glucosidase inhibition was 0.15 mg dried material/mL (mg DM/mL), which was much lower than that of acarbose (IC50 value of 0.64 mg DM/mL). In total, 80 compounds including 8 organic acids, 11 phenolic acids, 25 flavonoids, 21 fatty acids, and 15 others were identified or tentatively identified from CDL extract by HPLC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis. The results suggested that CDL could be a potential source of α-glucosidase inhibitors. It can also provide useful phytochemical information for research into other bioactivities.

The peel of Gac fruit (Momordica cochinchinensis Spreng.), which is considered as waste of Gac processing, has been found to possess high levels of carotenoids and other antioxidants. This study aimed at determining the optimal conditions of an ultrasound-assisted extraction for recovering carotenoids and antioxidant capacity from Gac peel. A response surface methodology using the Box–Behnken design was employed to investigate the impact of extraction time, temperature and ultrasonic power on the recovery of total carotenoid and antioxidant capacity. The results showed that an extraction time of 76 min, temperature of 50 °C and ultrasonic power of 250 W were the optimal conditions for the extraction. The experimental carotenoid yield and antioxidant capacity obtained under the optimal extraction conditions were validated as 269 mg/100 g DW (dry weight) and 822 µM TE (Trolox equivalent)/100 g DW, respectively. These values were not significantly different from the values predicted by the models. The HPLC analysis for carotenoid composition showed that β-carotene, lycopene and lutein were the principal carotenoids of the extract, which constitute 86% of the total carotenoid content. Based on the obtained results, the ultrasound-assisted extraction using ethyl acetate under the above optimal conditions is suggested for the simultaneous recovery of carotenoids and antioxidant capacity from Gac peel.

The nutritional quality of kiwifruit has been highlighted by several studies, while its peel is typically discarded as a by-product with no commercial value. This study was carried out to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds from kiwi peel. Three independent variables (time (t), ultrasonic power (P) and ethanol concentration (EtOH)) were combined in a five-level central composite rotatable design coupled with the response surface methodology (RSM). The extraction yield determined gravimetrically and the content of phenolic compounds identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MSn (namely two quercetin glycosides, one catechin isomer and one B-type (epi)catechin dimer) were the experimental responses used in the optimization. The polynomial models were successfully fitted to the experimental data and used to determine the optimal UAE conditions. The sonication of the sample at 94.4 W for 14.8 min, using 68.4% ethanol, resulted in a maximum of 1.51 ± 0.04 mg of flavonoids per g of extract, a result that allowed the experimental validation of the predictive model. The kiwi peel extract obtained under optimized conditions showed somehow promising bioactive properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, and no toxicity to Vero cells. Overall, this study contributes to the valorization of kiwi peel as a low-cost raw material for the development of natural ingredients (such as food preservatives) and also to the resource-use efficiency and circular bioeconomy.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of polysaccharides from the Chinese medicinal plantRhodiola sachalinensisA. BOR (PRs) was studied. The effects of four factors (extraction time, ultrasonic power, liquid-solid ratio and extraction temperature) on the extraction yield of PRs were investigated by the single-factor test, and the optimum UAE conditions were investigated by the orthogonal test. The results demonstrated that the optimum UAE conditions for PRs were as followings: extraction time of 30 min, ultrasonic power of 85 W, liquid-solid ratio of 45 ml/g, and extraction temperature of 45°C. The present data might provide a theoretic base for full utilization ofRhodiola sachalinensisA. BOR.
