This research is focusing on optimal placement and sizing of multiple variable passive filter (VPF) to mitigate harmonic distortion due to charging station (CS) at 449 bus distribution network. There are 132 units of CS which are scheduled based on user behaviour within 24 hours, with the interval of 15 minutes. By considering the varying of CS patterns and harmonic impact, Modified Lightning Search Algorithm (MLSA) is used to find 22 units of VPF coordination, so that less harmonics will be injected from 415 V bus to the medium voltage network and power loss is also reduced. Power system harmonic flow, VPF, CS, battery, and the analysis will be modelled in MATLAB/m-file platform. High Performance Computing (HPC) is used to make simulation faster. Pareto-Fuzzy technique is used to obtain sizing of VPF from all nondominated solutions. From the result, the optimal placements and sizes of VPF are able to reduce the maximum THD for voltage and current and also the total apparent losses up to 39.14%, 52.5%, and 2.96%, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the MLSA is suitable method to mitigate harmonic and it is beneficial in minimizing the impact of aggressive CS installation at distribution network.

This paper purposely to examine and analyse the impact of the distribution capacitors banks operation to the transition of total harmonic distortion (THD) level in distribution network system. The main advantage of this work is the simplicity algorithm of the method and the system being analysed using free access open software which is known as electric power distribution system simulator (OpenDSS). In this paper, the harmonic current spectrum which is collected from the commercial site was injected to a node point on IEEE13 bus in order to provide the initial measurement of THD for the network. The proper sizing of the capacitors banks has been set and being deactivated and activated throughout the network to see the transistion in the THD level in the system. The results were achieved by simulation of the data on the configured IEEE13 bus. The simulation work was done by using the combination of C++ source codes, OpenDSS and Microsoft Excel software. From the output results, the THD current has increased up to two times from the initial value in certain phases and for the THD voltage, the THD has increased up to three times from its initial value in all phases.

The installation of distributed generation (DG) gives advantages to the environment such as, it contribute in the reduction of non-peak operating cost, diversification of energy resources, lower losses thus improving overall organization. These advantages might be rescinded if no proper location and sizing of DGs are considered before the DG’s installation. This paper offers an optimal location and sizing of multiple DGs using heuristic method called gravitational search algorithm (GSA). The suggested algorithm is tested on 13-bus radial distribution system. This method is being compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) in terms of system power loss, voltage deviation and total voltage harmonic distortion (THDv). GSA shows the ability to locate and sized DG optimally with a better performance and more reliable than PSO.

— The penetration of Electric Vehicle (EV) on the distribution network has been increased worldwide and this has also boosted up the impacts on power system performance affecting voltage profile, voltage sensitivity factor, harmonics, overloading, increased grid loss resulting in reduced efficiency and power quality. A coordinated charging schedule can reduce this stress on the power grid and show significant improvement of network parameters. In this study, by simulating through Power Factory built-in MV/LV distribution test system, the impact of increasing EV on the distribution system has been analyzed and a simple approach of charging schedule for a centralized charging station has been proposed that will minimize the deteriorating impacts on connected distribution system due to EV charging.

With the implementation of incentive policies for new energy vehicles of Chinese government, the development of new energy vehicles in China has made considerable progress, and in the field of electric vehicle charging facilities can also appeared in a number of demonstration projects. With the support of the National Grid, the establishment of a domestic Chongqing's first commercial fast-charging stations was done in 2012. Research on Electric vehicle fast charging caused to the distribution network with future large-scale deployment of electric vehicles will be of great value in guiding for the planning of distribution of the networks. In this work, we used a typical distribution network model to simulate the real conditions. The voltage loss caused by EVs’ fast charging on the transmission line was studied under different implementation scenarios.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to describe the design of a Hybrid Series Active Power Filter (HSeAPF) system to improve the quality of power on three-phase power distribution grids. The system controls are comprise of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) based on the Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) theory, and supported by Phase Locked Loop (PLL) for generating the switching pulses to control a Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The DC link voltage is controlled by Non-Linear Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for faster response and to ensure that it is maintained at a constant value. When this voltage is compared with Proportional Integral (PI), then the improvements made can be shown. The function of HSeAPF control is to eliminate voltage fluctuations, voltage swell/sag, and prevent voltage/current harmonics are produced by both non-linear loads and small inverters connected to the distribution network. A digital Phase Locked Loop that generates frequencies and an oscillating phase-locked output signal controls the voltage. The results from the simulation indicate that the HSeAPF can effectively suppress the dynamic and harmonic reactive power compensation system. Also, the distribution network has a low Total Harmonic Distortion (< 5%), demonstrating that the designed system is efficient, which is an essential requirement when it comes to the IEEE-519 and IEC 61,000–3-6 standards.

The problem of reactive power compensation in electric distribution networks is addressed in this research paper from the point of view of the combinatorial optimization using a new discrete-continuous version of the vortex search algorithm (DCVSA). To explore and exploit the solution space, a discrete-continuous codification of the solution vector is proposed, where the discrete part determines the nodes where the distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) will be installed, and the continuous part of the codification determines the optimal sizes of the D-STATCOMs. The main advantage of such codification is that the mixed-integer nonlinear programming model (MINLP) that represents the problem of optimal placement and sizing of the D-STATCOMs in distribution networks only requires a classical power flow method to evaluate the objective function, which implies that it can be implemented in any programming language. The objective function is the total costs of the grid power losses and the annualized investment costs in D-STATCOMs. In addition, to include the impact of the daily load variations, the active and reactive power demand curves are included in the optimization model. Numerical results in two radial test feeders with 33 and 69 buses demonstrate that the proposed DCVSA can solve the MINLP model with best results when compared with the MINLP solvers available in the GAMS software. All the simulations are implemented in MATLAB software using its programming environment.

Social considerations for a sustainable future lead to market demands for electromobility. Hence, electrical power distribution operators are concerned about the real ongoing problem of the electrification of the transport sector. In this regard, the paper aims to investigate the large-scale integration of electric vehicles in a Swedish distribution network. To this end, the integration pattern is taken into consideration as appears in the literature for other countries and applies to the Swedish culture. Moreover, different charging power levels including smart charging techniques are examined for several percentages of electric vehicles penetration. Industrial simulation tools proven for their accuracy are used for the study. The results indicate that the grid can manage about 50% electric vehicles penetration at its current capacity. This percentage decreases when higher charging power levels apply, while the transformers appear overloaded in many cases. The investigation of alternatives to increase the grid’s capabilities reveal that smart techniques are comparable to the conventional re-dimension of the grid. At present, the increased integration of electric vehicles is manageable by implementing a combination of smart gird and upgrade investments in comparison to technically expensive alternatives based on grid digitalization and algorithms that need to be further confirmed for their reliability for power sharing and energy management.

This paper presents the optimal and sizing of distributed generation (DG) placement in a radial distribution system for loss reduction. The main emphasis of this paper is to identify proper locations for installing DGs in a distribution system to reduce active power loss and improve bus voltages. Nevertheless, proper placement and sizing of DG units are not straightforward to be identified as a number of their positions and capacities need to be determined. It is therefore proposed in this paper to solve a DG placement problem based on a Tabu search algorithm. The objective function of the problem is to minimize the system loss subject to power flow constraints, bus voltage limits, pre specified number of DGs, and their allowable total installed capacity, and only one distributed generator for one installation position. The effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated by a practical sized distribution system consisting of 69 bus and 48 load points. The results show that the optimal DG placement and sizing can be identified to give the minimum power loss while respecting all the constraints.
