Two novel oxidovanadium(IV) complexes with a new bidentate (O- and N-) imine-based ligand 2-((E)-(6-fluorobenzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol (HL) were synthesized under in situ experimental condition where VOSO4 acts as a kinetic template in the ratio 2 : 1 (L : M) and mixed ligand complex using 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in 1 : 1 : 1 (L : M : phen) ratio. The synthesized compounds were structurally characterized by microanalysis, magnetic susceptibility, FTIR, electronic spectra, TG/DTA, ESR, and molar conductance studies. Based on the spectral studies, the complexes have the general composition [VO(L)2] (C1) and [VO(L)phen] (C2) in a square pyramid geometrical fashion. The synthesized compounds were primarily screened for their in vitro growth inhibiting activity against different strains of bacteria, namely, E. coli, B. subtilis, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa by the disc diffusion method. Also, the antifungal activity was determined against C. albicans and A. niger by the Bateman poisoned technique. The in vitro antioxidant activity of all the compounds was determined by DPPH free radical-scavenging assay. Intercalative mode of DNA-binding properties of the oxidovanadium(IV) complexes with calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated using UV, fluorescence spectra, and viscosity measurements.

The metal complexes of Fe(III) and Cu(II) were prepared by using 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNPH) and thiocyanate (SCN) with stirrer refluxed for about 6 h. The prepared Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility and electronic spectrum, FT-IR spectral studies. The result suggested the octahedral geometry for Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes. Powder X-ray diffraction indicate the crystalline nature of the metal complexes. The antimicrobial activities of the Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes were tested with various micro organisms by disc diffusion method. The antimicrobial results indicate that the metal complexes are highly active with compared to the free ligand. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the free ligand and its metal complexes was assayed by radical scavenging activity (DPPH). The result proposed that Fe (III) and Cu(II) complexes exhibited strong antioxidant activity than that of the ligand.

A series of quinazolines encompassed with thiazolidinone and azetidinone have been synthesized and evaluated for their antioxidant, anticancer and DNA binding studies. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, 1H & 13C NMR and mass spectra. Antioxidant activity was carried out using % free radical scavenging by DPPH assay. Compounds 4b, 5b and 5d have shown better antioxidant activity (60, 67 and 66%, respectively) among the tested compounds. Compounds having % free radical scavenging activity more than 55% were evaluated for anticancer activity by MTT assay towards cell lines A-549 (lung carcinoma) and MDA-231 (human breast cancer). Results revealed that the tested compounds exhibited moderate to low anticancer activity. Further, DNA binding activity was studied by absorption titration method for all the synthesized compounds, and compound 5b showed a good binding constant of 70.05 and % hyperchromicity of 82.93%.

A new bidentate Schiff base (E)-N′[(E)-3-phenylallylidene]benzene-1,2-diamine derived from the condensation of o-phenylenediamine and cinnamaldehyde and its Mn(II) and Hg(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moment, electronic spectra, IR, far-IR and NMR (1H & 13C) spectral studies. The elemental analysis and these metal proposed the metal:ligand stoichiometry and molecular formulae of the metal complexes. The molar conductance and electrochemical property indicates monomeric, neutral nature and redox properties of the metal complexes. The UV-visible spectral study supports the octahedral geometry for Mn(II) complex and square planar geometry for Hg(II) complex and further confirmed by magnetic moment. IR spectral data examined the coordination mode but far-IR is useful to identify the metal-ligand vibrations. The geometry, magnetic property and unsymmetrical nature of these metal complexes corroborated by NMR (1H & 13C) spectra. The DFT of Mn(II) complex studied and the structure optimized by B3LYP/Lan L2DZ using Gaussian 09W. Quantum chemical calculations were done by Mullikan population analysis, HOMO-LUMO and molecular electrostatic potential. The in vitro biological screening effects of the investigated complexes were tested against some bacteria and fungus by agar-well diffusion method. The results indicated that Mn(II) and Hg(II) complexes exhibit potentially active than the Schiff base which was further confirmed by pharmacokinetics study. The antioxidant activity of Schiff base and its Mn(II) complex was examined by radical scavenging DPPH method.

To understand the stability, chelation behaviour, and biological activity of 4-Formylpyridinethiosemicarbazone (H4FPT), it is important to recognize its interactive geometry. Hence, computational studies on geometrically optimized structures of thione and thiol forms of H4FPT were performed. Binary metal complexes of the ligand, H4FPT (L) with the Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal ions (M), were synthesized and characterized by various spectroanalytical techniques as elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, LC-MS, TGA, IR, UV-Visible, ESR, and powder XRD. Elemental analysis, LC-MS, and TGA studies indicate 1:2 (ML2) composition for mononuclear Ni(II) complex and 1:1 (ML) composition for dinuclear Cu(II) complex. Electronic absorption titrations, fluorescence quenching studies, and viscosity measurements suggest intercalative mode of binding of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA). These complexes also promote hydrolytic cleavage of plasmid pBR322. The ligand (H4FPT) and its complexes showed moderate-to-good activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The DPPH radical scavenging studies showed antioxidant nature of both complexes.

The study is intended to evaluate the pharmacological activities, isolation and characterization of the bioactive phytochemical constituents from the crude leaf extract of Sterculia urens Roxb. The extraction of the phytochemicals from the leaves was carried on Soxhlet extraction apparatus using solvents like hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. Pharmacological activities such as DPPH free radical scavenging assay (antioxidant), α-amylase inhibition assay (antidiabetic), albumin denaturation assay (antiinflammatory), blood clot lysis method (thrombolytic) and well diffusion method (antibacterial) of the crude extracts were evaluated and then the semi-preparative HPLC analysis followed by spectral studies was carried for the purification and identification of bioactive compounds. The methanolic extract showed high DPPH radical scavenging activity, α-amylase inhibition activity and albumin denaturation inhibition activity with IC50 values of 29.51±0.11, 146.85±0.18 and 149.91±0.19 μg/mL respectively. The % clot lysis of the methanolic extract was found higher than the other extracts and all the extracts have potential inhibition on the growth of the bacterial studied. From the leaf methanolic extract, 4 phenolic compounds (2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, methyl 4- hydroxycinnamate, p-coumaric acid and stercurensin) and 3 phenolic compounds (gossypetin, farrerol and quercetin 5,7,3',4'-tetramethyl ether) were isolated and characterised. Based on the results observed, it can be concluded that the leaf extracts of Sterculia urens Roxb are having rich phytochemical constituents with prominent pharmacological activities.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical and pharmacological screening of fruit extracts of Aegle marmelos using various in vitro methods. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated by using DPPH free radical scavenging and reducing power method, while well diffusion method was used for antimicrobial activity. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of flavonoids, and phenolics were abundantly present in methanolic and aqueous extracts of A. marmelos. Methanolic extract showed significant antioxidant potential, which was however inferior to that of ascorbic acid. The methanolic extract showed maximum zone of inhibition against the S. aureus (18 mm) and it was higher than that of the standard tetracycline. The HPLC data predict that the presence of scopoletin, marmelosin and umbelliferone, which may contribute to their pharmacological action.
