Buildings represent significant investment of developers and, as such, it is important to ensure value for the capital injected into the construction of buildings. Unfortunately, due to neglect of proper construction practices, buildings are facing defects, and one of such defects is rising damp. This study sought to identify some of the construction practices contributing to rising damp in buildings and their effects and suggest some remedial measures for controlling and treatment of rising damps. Snowball sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to gather data from a cross section of 78 building environment professionals in Kumasi and Ejisu who have experienced the effects of moisture rise. Relative Importance Index was used to rank the significance of the causes. The study revealed that failure to use damp-proof membrane or course, presence of groundwater, porosity of masonry, and concrete element sand flooding were the main causes of rising damp. Undersetting and saw slotting, making good plumbing leakages, using approved waterproof chemical injection, and application of admixtures were the main measures recommended to avert rising damp.

Delays are one of the major problems construction industry faces. Delays can lead to many negative effects such as arbitration between owners and contractors, increased cost, loss of productivity and revenue, and contract termination. Various studies have been carried out to highlight the general causes of delays and suggest possible remedial measures to minimize the effect of delays on a project. This study aims to highlight the critical factors with specific reference to non-excusable delays (NEDs) only. It also suggests possible remedial measures to minimize the effects of contractor-oriented NEDs which is a significant type of delays in the construction industry. A qualitative study has been conducted for this research. Data have been collected by the use of a set of questionnaires on numerous construction project stakeholders. Relative importance index (RII) has been used for prioritizing the factors. Results show that slow material mobilization, subcontractor unreliability and shortage of labor and materials are the most critical NED causes. This paper aims to provide a prerequisite knowledge to practitioners to make a more informed decision in managing NED.

Abstract This study investigated the perception students have on the relative hazardity of political, religious, economic, sexual and social harassment on students.  Four hundred students were drawn as research respondents through convenience and stratified sampling techniques.  Using Likert type scale, respondents were requested to indicate the level of hazard of each political, religious, economic, sexual and social harassment (PRESS) factor using 5 = very hazardous; 4 = hazardous; 3 = neutral; 2 = not hazardous; 1 = less hazardous. Digital interview was used to obtain data from the respondents.  Frequency counts, percentage, relative importance index and chi square were used to analyse the data.  Results indicated that the PRESS factors were perceived as hazardous by students; however, contrary to popular belief that sexual harassment was most hazardous, the results indicated that religious harassment was the most hazardous; sexual harassment was second; economic harassment was third; political harassment was fourth; and social harassment was fifth. Based on the findings, it was recommended that harassment factors should be addressed according to their magnitude; and that addressing harassment behaviour should be holistic and comprehensive.  Furthermore, education of stakeholders should take the issue of harassment serious by being proactive. Keywords: Economic harassment, political harassment, religious harassment, sexual harassment, and social harassment.

There are certain factors within and outside organisations that can influence organisational performance. The presence or absence of those factors impacts organisations' ability to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals. As a risk-prone business sector, construction organisations need to identify those determinants that could ensure their superior performance. To date, global studies have identified many determinants that govern the performance of construction organisations. However, few of these are known in New Zealand, and their weightings could be useful in forming business strategies. Therefore, this paper measures the significance of identified determinants of construction organisational performance. A total of 100 professionals participated in a questionnaire survey administered using a snowball sampling technique. The Relative Importance Index approach was used to rank the determinants according to their importance to organisational performance. Five main determinants were significant and ranked highly, with more than 80% relative importance index scores. These determinants are resources and capabilities, competitive strategies, organisational characteristics, environmental factors, and customers relationship management. This finding provides a useful benchmark for future research on the significance of some determinants that could explain the performance differentials experienced in the construction domain in New Zealand
