Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary science based on the application of engineering approaches to biologic tissue formation. Engineered tissue internal organization represents a key aspect to increase biofunctionality before transplant and, as regarding skeletal muscles, the potential of generating contractile forces is dependent on the internal fiber organization and is reflected by some macroscopic parameters, such as the spontaneous contraction. Here we propose the application of digital image correlation (DIC) as an independent tool for an accurate and noninvasive measurement of engineered muscle tissue spontaneous contraction. To validate the proposed technique we referred to the X-MET, a promising 3-dimensional model of skeletal muscle. The images acquired through a high speed camera were correlated with a custom-made algorithm and the longitudinal strain predictions were employed for measuring the spontaneous contraction. The spontaneous contraction reference values were obtained by studying the force response. The relative error between the spontaneous contraction frequencies computed in both ways was always lower than 0.15%. In conclusion, the use of a DIC based system allows for an accurate and noninvasive measurement of biological tissues’ spontaneous contraction, in addition to the measurement of tissue strain field on any desired region of interest during electrical stimulation.

Video deflectometer based on using off-axis digital image correlation (DIC) has emerged as a robust non-contact optical tool for deflection measurements of bridges. In practice, a video deflectometer often needs to measure the deflections at multiple positions of the bridge. The existing 2D-DIC-based measurement methods usually use a laser rangefinder to measure the distance from each point to the camera to obtain the scale factor for the point. It is only suitable for the deflection measurements of a few points since manually measuring distances for a large number of points is time consuming and impractical. In this paper, a novel method for full-field bridge deflection measurement based on off-axis DIC is proposed. Because the bridge is usually a slender structure and the region of interest on the bridge is often a narrow band, the new approach can determine the scale factors of all the points of interest with a spatial straight-line fitting scheme. Moreover, the proposed technique employs reliability-guided processing and a fast initial parameter estimation strategy for real-time and accurate image-matching analysis. An indoor cantilever beam experiment verified the accuracy of the proposed approach, and a field test of a high-speed railway bridge demonstrated the robustness and practicability of the technique.

Three different tools for Digital Image Correlation (DIC) were used for evaluation of dynamic experiments performed using custom Open Hopkinson Pressure Bar (OHPB) apparatus. High strain-rate measurements were performed on specimens of advanced cellular materials with predefined structure and negative Poisson’s ratio. Low impedance polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bars instrumented with foil strain-gauges were used for dynamic loading of the specimens. Experiments were observed using a pair of high-speed cameras for imaging of loading process in sufficient quality. Custom developed evaluation DIC tool implemented in Matlab, open-source Matlab tool (NCorr) and commercial DIC software (ISTRA 4D) were all used for evaluation of image sequences recorded by high-speed cameras. Comparison of results obtained using all three different DIC tools and results of complementary strain-gauge measurement are shown in this paper. Verification of reliability of custom made DIC software tool is presented.

ABSTRACT This article presents a novel experimental technique for measuring in-plane deformations and vibration modes of a rotating nonpneumatic tire subjected to obstacle impacts. The tire was mounted on a modified quarter-car test rig, which was built around one of the drums of a 500-horse power chassis dynamometer at Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research. A series of experiments were conducted using a high-speed camera to capture the event of the rotating tire coming into contact with a cleat attached to the surface of the drum. The resulting video was processed using a two-dimensional digital image correlation algorithm to obtain in-plane radial and tangential deformation fields of the tire. The dynamic mode decomposition algorithm was implemented on the deformation fields to extract the dominant frequencies that were excited in the tire upon contact with the cleat. It was observed that the deformations and the modal frequencies estimated using this method were within a reasonable range of expected values. In general, the results indicate that the method used in this study can be a useful tool in measuring in-plane deformations of rolling tires without the need for additional sensors and wiring.

Experimental characterization and validation of skin components in aircraft entails multiple evaluations (structural, aerodynamic, acoustic, etc.) and expensive campaigns. They require different rigs and equipment to perform the necessary tests. Two of the main dynamic characterizations include the energy absorption under impact forcing and the identification of modal parameters through the vibration response under any broadband excitation, which also includes impacts. This work exploits the response of a stiffened aircraft composite panel submitted to a multi-impact excitation, which is intended for impact and energy absorption analysis. Based on the high stiffness of composite materials, the study worked under the assumption that the global response to the multi-impact excitation is linear with small strains, neglecting the nonlinear behavior produced by local damage generation. Then, modal identification could be performed. The vibration after the impact was measured by high-speed 3D digital image correlation and employed for full-field operational modal analysis. Multiple modes were characterized in a wide spectrum, exploiting the advantages of the full-field noninvasive techniques. These results described a consistent modal behavior of the panel along with good indicators of mode separation given by the auto modal assurance criterion (Auto-MAC). Hence, it illustrates the possibility of performing these dynamic characterizations in a single test, offering additional information while reducing time and investment during the validation of these structures.

The dynamic constitutive behaviors of concrete-like materials are of vital importance for structure designing under impact loading conditions. This study proposes a new method to evaluate the constitutive behaviors of ordinary concrete at high strain rates. The proposed method combines the Lagrangian-inverse analysis method with optical techniques (ultra-high-speed camera and digital image correlation techniques). The proposed method is validated against finite-element simulation. Spalling tests were conducted on concretes where optical techniques were employed to obtain the high-frequency spatial and temporal displacement data. We then obtained stress–strain curves of concrete by applying the proposed method on the results of spalling tests. The results show non-linear constitutive behaviors in these stress–strain curves. These non-linear constitutive behaviors can be possibly explained by local heterogeneity of concrete. The proposed method provides an alternative mean to access the dynamic constitutive behaviors which can help future structure designing of concrete-like materials.

Experimental modal analysis is a relatively young part of dynamics, which deals with the vibration modes identification of machines or their parts. Its development has started since the beginning of the eighties, when the computers hardware equipment has improved and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) could be used for the results determination. Nowadays it provides an uncountable set of vibration analysis possibilities starting with conventional contact transducers of acceleration and ending with modern noncontact optical methods. In this contribution we mention the use of high-speed digital image correlation by experimental determination of mode shapes and modal frequencies. The aim of our work is to create a program application called Modan 3D enabling the performing of experimental modal analysis and operational modal analysis. In this paper the experimental modal analysis of a thin steel sample performed with Q-450 Dantec Dynamics is described. In Modan 3D the experiment data were processed and the vibration modes were determined. The reached results were verified by PULSE modulus specialized for mechanical vibration analysis.

The Split Hopkinson Bar (SHB) technique is used for high strain rate testing of T800/F3900 composite in compression, tension and shear. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used for measuring the full-field deformation on the surface of the specimen by using Shimadzu HPV-X2 high-speed video camera. Compression tests have been done on specimens machined from a unidirectional laminate in the 0°and 90° directions. Tensile tests were done in the 90° direction. Shear tests were done by using a notched specimen in a compression SHB apparatus. To study the effect of strain rate, quasi-static testing was also done using DIC and specimens with the same geometry as in the SHB tests. The results show that the DIC technique provides accurate strain measurements even at strains that are smaller than 1%. No strain rate effect is observed in compression in the 0° direction and significant strain rate effects are observed in compression and tension in the 90° direction, and in shear.
