A multiband circular polarizer based on fission transmission of linearly polarized wave forx-band application is proposed, which is constructed of 2 × 2 metallic strips array. The linear-to-circular polarization conversion is obtained by decomposing the linearly incidentx-polarized wave into two orthogonal vector components of equal amplitude and 90° phase difference between them. The innovative approach of “fission transmission of linear-to-circular polarized wave” is firstly introduced to obtain giant circular dichroism based on decomposition of orthogonal vector components through the structure. It means that the incident linearly polarized wave is converted into two orthogonal components through lower printed metallic strips layer and two transmitted waves impinge on the upper printed strips layer to convert into four orthogonal vector components at the end of structure. This projection and transmission sequence of orthogonal components sustain the chain transmission of electromagnetic wave and can achieve giant circular dichroism. Theoretical analysis and microwave experiments are presented to validate the performance of the structure. The measured results are in good agreement with simulation results. In addition, the proposed circular polarizer exhibits the optimal performance with respect to the normal incidence. The right handed circularly polarized wave is emitted ranging from 10.08 GHz to 10.53 GHz and 10.78 GHz to 11.12 GHz, while the left handed circular polarized wave is excited at 10.54 GHz–10.70 GHz and 11.13 GHz–11.14 GHz, respectively.

Kata kunci: metamaterial, circular dichroism, chirality, polarisasi, eliptisitasAbstract – This paper describes the circular dichroism effect on planar chiral metamaterial. When a linearly polarized light passes through the planar chiral metamaterial, its polarization plane will rotate. On the circular dichroism effect, the right and left circulary polarized light will have different absorption due to its interaction with a planar chiral metamaterial. The ellipticity spectrum of a planar chiral metamaterial sample shows a positive ellipticity value for the counter clock-wise sample and a negative value for the clock-wise sample. The maximum ellipticity value is determine as +0,3 and -0,3 at frequency of 1,29 THz. The values show the existence of a coupling between photon and the sample surface plasmon. The opposite polarity indicates that the clock-wise and the counter clock-wise sample have different absorbance. The determined ellipticity value also reveals that the linearly polarized femtosecond laser light has transformed to elliptical polarized THz wave on a planar chiral metamaterial sample emission. The planar chiral metamaterial capability to rotate the polarization plane into circulary polarized wave, makes the material can be considered as an alternative polarizer in terahertz field.  Key words: metamaterial, circular dichroism, chirality, polarization, ellipticity

Salmine A I, one of the components of the protamine from salmon, has been purified and characterized. The conformational preferences of salmine A I have been examined as a function of pH, added salts, presence of helix-supporting solvents, and temperature, using circular dichroism. It has been found that this small basic protein adopts predominantly an unordered conformation in aqueous solution. Addition of counter-ions, in particular perchlorate, and 2-chloroethanol induces to various extents the onset of the right-handed α-helical conformation. The results are discussed in comparison with those previously reported on the three main components of clupeine, the protamine from herring, and with the published conformational predictions by various statistical methods

We present the design of a new microwave all-dielectric chiral metasurface with circular dichroism behavior based on elliptic dielectric resonators (EDRs). During the design procedure, we have first optimized numerically the effects of the main design parameters such as the resonator’s size and orientation, as well as the size of the slot within them, on the metasurface transmission over the frequency band 10–20 GHz. Measurements on the final metasurface prototype have shown a large circular dichroism (Δ=0.61 and Δ=0.5) over two bands (17.55–17.61 GHz and 17.91–18.05 GHz) with ellipticities close to 45° which means that the developed device can be used as a circular polarization filter and circular polarizer at microwave frequencies.

Exploitation of X-ray circular polarized beams to study forbidden Bragg reflections and new information that could be obtained in these experiments are discussed. It is shown that the intensities of such reflections can be different for the right- and left-circular polarizations (i.e. exhibiting circular dichroism) even for the dipole–dipole resonant transitions involved in the scattering process. This difference can be observed only in crystals having no center of inversion. Here, this approach is used to study helicity-dependent resonant diffraction in copper metaborate CuB2O4 single crystal, which is non-centrosymmetric but achiral. Nonetheless, a strong circular dichroism has been observed for hh0 forbidden reflections in the vicinity of the Cu K-edge. This effect is shown to originate from dipolar transitions in Cu atoms occupying the 8(d) Wyckoff position only.

In the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes, a system of coupled waves equations is obtained, which is applicable for describing the diffraction and coupling of elliptically polarized light waves on a volume phase-amplitude holographic grating formed in a cubic optically active photorefractive absorbing piezoelectric crystal. The dependence of the diffraction efficiency of the phase reflection hologram on the ellipticity of the readout wave and the thickness of the Bi12SiO20 crystal of the (001) and (111) cuts was studied. The regularities of the effect of circular dichroism on the diffraction efficiency of the phase reflection hologram are analyzed. It is shown that for crystal of (001)-cut the maximum diffraction efficiency of the reflection hologram depending on the crystal thickness can be achieved using a readout wave both with linear polarization and with elliptical polarization. For crystal of (111)-cut the highest diffraction efficiency is achieved using a linearly polarized readout wave. It has been established that the effect of circular dichroism on the intensity of the reconstructed wave depends on the cut of the crystal, the ellipticity of the readout wave and the thickness of the crystal.

Arrays of nanoholes in metal are important plasmonic devices, proposed for applications spanning from biosensing to communications. In this work, we show that in such arrays the symmetry can be broken by means of the elliptical shape of the nanoholes, combined with the in-plane tilt of the ellipse axes away from the array symmetry lines. The array then differently interacts with circular polarizations of opposite handedness at normal incidence, i.e., it becomes intrinsically chiral. The measure of this difference is called circular dichroism (CD). The nanosphere lithography combined with tilted silver evaporation was employed as a low-cost fabrication technique. In this paper, we demonstrate intrinsic chirality and CD by measuring the extinction in the near-infrared range. We further employ numerical analysis to visualize the circular polarization coupling with the nanostructure. We find a good agreement between simulations and the experiment, meaning that the optimization can be used to further increase CD.
